BROILERL Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 28, 1906.
Appication filed March 13, 1905. Serial No; 249.730.
1'0 cpl/ 10/7/0772; it 711.6074 concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE L. ELAN- DREAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Chester, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in broilers, and the main objects of my improvement are efficiency and convenience in use.
In the accompanying drawing the only figure is a perspective view of my broiler with two corners of the supporting-plate broken off, together with broken lines indicating the reverse position of one of the handles.
A designates a supporting-plate which may be provided with any convenient handles 1. It is provided with a central opening B and supporting devices in the form of lugs 2 at the opposite ends of the said opening. The said opening is preferably pro vided with a cover 0, hinged to the plate A in any proper manner, and may also be pro vided with suitable stops 3 for stopping the cover in the desired position when turned back, as shown. It is also preferred to provide the said cover with some suitable fastening device 4 to hold the said cover in its closed position. The cover, as before stated, is preferable but it is not considered essential. The supporting-plate (or plate and cover) constitute one element of my broiler and is designed to be placed over a fire or bed of coalsas, for example, on an ordinary cooking range or stove with the lids removed.
The other element is what in general is an ordinary double wire broiler and to which is added reversible suspensionhandles. This broiler is formed of two parts 5 and 6, hinged together at one end in any ordinary manner, as by the links 7. The opposite end of the double broiler is provided with extensions 8 and 9 and a fastening loop or flattened ring 10 or some equivalent means of fastening and unfastening the two parts 5 and 6 for the insertion and removal of the meat or other food to be broiled. The extension 8 is on the part 5 and is preferably a little longer than the extension 9. The said part 5 has a similar but shorter extension '11 at the end opposite the extension 8. To these extensions 8 and 11 the reversible suspension-handles 12 are hinged. The said handles are provided with a plurality of supporting devices in the form of cross-rods 13 for catching upon the supporting-lugs 2. The broiler is particularly designed for use with the supporting-plate, but may of course be used in connection with any other support to which it is adapted.
In use the plate is placed over a suitable fire, and the food to be broiled is fastened in the broiler. The broiler may be then taken by its two handles and let down through the opening in the supporting-plate so as to bring the broiler at the desired distance above the fire. The handles may then be swung outwardly to engage the supportinglugs by the desired one of the cross-rods, as
shown, thereby suspending the broiler by the handles. The cover can then be closed by shutting it down between the handles. In order to turn the broiler, it is removed and both handles swung outwardly one-half of a revolution, as indicated for a portion of one handle by broken lines, and then the broiler is replaced the other side up.
It is apparent that some changes from the specific construction herein disclosed may be made, and therefore I'do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form of construction shown and described, but desire the liberty to make such changes in working my invention as may fairly come within the spirit and scope of the same.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of a supporting-plate separateand distinct from the top of the stove but adapted to rest upon the top surface in which the lid-openings are formed, and having an oblong broiler-opening with a broiler-supporting device at each end of the said opening in substantially the plane of the said plate, with the double reversible broiler having a reversible handle at each end, the said handles having supporting devices for engagement with the pair of supporting devices in the plane of the said plate at the ends of the said oblong opening.
2. A broiler supporting-plate separate and distinct from the top of the stove and adapted to rest flatly on the top surface of the stove in which the lid-openings are formed, and over varying-sized lid-openings, the said plate having an oblong broiler-opening with a broiler-supporting device in the plane of the said plate at each end of the said opening.
3. The combination of a supporting-plate, having a central opening and a supportinglug at each end of the said opening, with a broiler having a suspension-handle at each I outer end of the handle and the broiler with 10 end, each of the said handles being provided a plurality of suspension devices arranged at with a series of cross-rods, each of which various heights in the length of the said hanforms the upper end of an eye for being endles. gaged by the said lugs to support the broiler at various heights thereon. EUGENE FLANDREAU' 4. A broiler having suspension-handles one Witnesses: of which is hinged to each end thereof, the M. J. CURRIE,
said handles being provided between thel ALBERT I. DRAYTON.
