UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED HOPKINS, OF ALLS'IGN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HOPKINS MANU- FACTURING 00., OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHU- SETTS.
PRESSING ARM.
Application filed May 21,
My invention relates to a pressing arm and the general object of my invention is to provide a pressing arm improved in various particulars especially with respect to providing an assemblage whereby the pressing arm can be swung with the presser board thereof to a raised position clear of the ironing board or to a lowered position on the ironing board for the presser board to function.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of two examples of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pressing arm embodying my invention showing the same in full lines in lowered position for functioning and indicated by the dotted lines in raised position;
Figure 2 is a plan View;
Figure 3 is a detail of the rockably mounted end of the pressing arm and the support to which it is pivoted;
Figure 4 is a vertical section through the pivot of the presser board;
Figure 5 is a plan view showing a modification.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the example shown in Figures 1 to 4, a transverse base is provided on any suitable supporting structure A of an ironing board B. The base 10 has upturned ends receiving the pivot pin 11 of the pressing arm 12. Said pin turns in bearings in lugs 111 rigid with base 10. Said pressing arm extends beyond the pivot as at 13 and has a rounded end adapted to engage a spring 113 on the base 10 as shown best in Figure 3 when the arm 12 is in the raised position as indicated in dotted lines at the left of Figure 1.
The numeral 14 indicates a presser board which is pivoted to the outer end of the arm 12 by coacting elements on said arm and de- 192fi. Serial No. 110,757.
pending from said presser board 14:- In the illustrated form a socket 15 isrigid with the pressing arm 12 and has a base flange 16 adapted to rest on the ironing board B. The socket 15 tapers and a depending stud 18 on the presser board 14: and secured thereto by a flange 19 tapers also. The stud 18 has an annular groove 20 which receives the end of the retaining screw 17 tapped into the side of socket 15.
IVith the described assemblage, the arm 12 may be readily swung vertically on its pivot 11 clear of the ironing board B or lowered to a position with the base flange 16 resting on board B.
In the form shown in Figure 5, the base 110 is adapted to be secured to the top of an ironing board B. In said figure the numeral 11 indicates pivots as in the previously described construction turning in lugs 111 rigid with the base 110. The numeral 113 indicates the spring engaged by the rounded end of member 13 on the arm 12.
I would state furthermore that while the illustrated examples constitute practical embodiments of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: p
In a device of the class described a support, a presser arm pivoted near one end on said support to swing to a raised position or a lowered position, a socket rigid with said presser arm at the opposite end of said arm and disposed vertically, a presser board, and a member on said presser board turnably fitting said socket to permit the presser board to be swung horizontally.
ALFRED HOPKINS.
