Description
v G. A. coasuss ELECTRIC IRONING CORD GUIDE May 34, 1949.

Patented May 24, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELECTRIC IRONING CORD GUIDE George A. Corbliss, Long Island City, N. Y. Application April 8, 1948, Serial No. 19,687
2 Claims.
This invention relates to an electric ironing cord guide.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an electric cord guide which is adaptable to an ordinary cord and which does not require the use of springs for effecting the return of the cord away from the ironing board and wherein by the use of a simple weight disposed on the cable, or cord, the cord will be returned to the side of the board upon the electric iron being returned to the side thereof.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide an electric ironing cord guide which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install upon the ironing board and efiicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an ironing board and of the cord guide attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevational view of the ironing board and cord guide.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, in elevation, of the guide taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the top of the guide removed from the side portions as when it is desired to remove the cord from the wheel or to replace the same upon the wheel.
Referring now to the figures, I represents an ironing board on which my cord guide II is mounted. The cord guide has a spring clamp base I2 adapted to be extended over the edge of the ironing board as shown in Fig. 2 and upright side portions I3 forming a separate member which is journalled in a ball bearing element It on an upstanding sleeve projection I5 of the base I2. The portions I3 can accordingly swivel on the base I2. The side portions I3 are connected by a bottom portion I6 from which there extends a pivot pin projection I! which is extended into the ball bearing element I4.
The portions I3 have top extensions I8 over which there is extended a U-shaped top portion I9 having openings 2I for receiving the extensions I8. This top portion I9 can be removed in order to permit a cord 22 to be placed upon a pulley wheel 23 grooved to receive it and journalled on a pin 24 extending between the side portions I3. The cord 22 will be drawn along as the electric iron 25 is pulled over a piece 26 on the ironing board I0. On the cord, outwardly of the ironing board is a weight 21 which has a roller 28. This weight will cause the cord to be pulled downwardly from the pulley wheel 23 as the electric iron 25 is drawn rearwardly. The cord 28 has a plug 29 which is secured to a receptacle 3| in a Wall.
It will be apparent that the pulley wheel will serve as a support for the cord 22 and that the side portions I3 can swivel about a center point so as to permit the electric iron to be used on one side of the board or the other without any binding action on the pulley wheel. The pulley wheel has a groove for receiving the cord 22.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, what is claimed is:
1. An electric iron cord guide comprising a base adapted to be connected to an ironing board, side portions extending upwardly from the base, a pulley wheel pivotally connected between the side portions and adapted to receive the ironing cord, and means for providing weight upon the cord outwardly of the ironing board whereby to cause the cord to be lowered as the iron is returned toward the pulley, means for connecting said side portions to the base for swivel movement about a vertical axis, and a top portion lying over the pulley and joining the upper ends of the side portions, said side portions having interior faces lying flush with the interior face of the top portion.
2. An electric iron cord guide comprising a base adapted to be connected to an ironing board, side portions extending upwardly from the base, a pulley wheel connected between the side portions adapted to receive the ironing cord, and means for providing weight upon the cord outwardly of the ironing board whereby to cause the cord to be lowered as the iron is returned toward the pulley. and a top portion removably secured to the side portions to prevent the lifting of the cord as it is extended along the pulley, said top portion being of inverted U-shape and having leg ends engaging flush with the ends of the side portions, and cooperating retaining elements secured to the exterior of the top and side portions for retaining the top portion in place on the side portions.
