Description

March 22 1927.
TOBACCO PIPE Filed May 22, 1926 W. H. LEWIS INVENTOR W/LL/ M H. LEW/6' ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 22, 1927.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM H. LEWIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOBACCO PIPE.
Application filed May 22, 1926. Serial No. 110,913.
This invent-ion relates to tobacco pipes and my improvement is directed to a novel construction of the inner removable metallic tubes used with pipes, for convenient cleansing thereof.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide the removable tube with separate passages, one passage being superimposed over the other for the conveyance of smoke from the pipe bowl to its mouth-piece, and the other passage being divided and adapted to convey moisture, flowing down the tube, into a space or pocket provided therefor in the pipe stem, in order that the smoke taken into the users mouth may be dry, because it has avoided passing through an accumulation of moisture.
Other features and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a pipe in which is fitted one of my improved inner tubes.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view tube.
The pipe is shown as having a bowl portion 1, stem 2 and mouth-piece 3.
My improved inner tube is shown as having a main tubular portion 4 of diameter suited for fitting within the pipe stem 2, and an extended portion 5 of reduced diameter, suited for fitting within the pipe mouthpiece 3, in the manner usual with these devices.
The tubular portion 4, in accordance with my invention, is divided into two parallel passages 6, 7, the passage 6 lying above passage 7 and both said passages communicating of the inner respectively and independently, at their opposite ends, with the main tubular portion at.
In addition, the lowerpassage 7 is divided, intermediate its length, to provide the clearance 8.
Now itwill be apparentfand herein lies the purpose of my invention, that in the use of a pipe having one of my im roved inner tubes fitted therein, moisture flowing down the mouth-piece to the inner tube, will gravitat-e into the lower passage 7, and the bulk thereof will collect in the pipe stem at the clearance 83, thereby leaving the upper passage 6 dry for the conveyance of smoke from the pipe bowl to the mouth of the user. Al so, as is quite evident, since the upper passage 6 remains free from moisture and hence unclogged, it presents the path of least resistance to the suction pull upon the pipe, in consequence whereof a light draught through the mouth-piece at all times assures the delivery of a full volume of smoke that is untinctured with moisture and that has not been drawn through moist residue.
Variations within the spirit and scope of 55 my invention are equally comprehended by the foregoing disclosure.
I claim:
An inner tube for removable placement in the stem of a tobacco pipe, comprising a tubular member having an intermediate portion of its length provided with separated upper and lower parallel passageways, each communicating at their opposite ends with said member, said lower passageway being divided to provide a moisture escaping clearance. and said upper passageway serving for smoke conveyance.
Executed this 18th day of. May, 1926.
lVILLIAM H. LEWIS.
