UNITED STATES 1,62 httet PATENT OFFICE.
ETIENNE DANGER, OF PARIS, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR TO SOCIT ANONYME DES USINES A. E. DECOUFLE, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
CUTTNG DEVICE EUR CTGARETTE MACHINES.
Application filed November 10, 1925, Serial No. 68,206, and France January 8, 1925.
My invention has for its object a device for cuttingn ofi' the paper-covered roll of tobacco which is discharged from cigarette machine operating` on the continuous principle.
The said device comprises a l'cnife-carrying slide acting` according to a known principle in such manner that when the roll is to be cut, the slide will move parallel with the said roll and at the same speed as the latter. The knives mounted upon the slide are given a rapid rotation.
The appended drawing shows by way of example an embodiment of thel said invention.
.E 1g. 1 is a lengthwise section. Fig'. 2 a side view and,
Fig. 3 a plan view.
The said device comprises a driving shaft to which is keyed a pinion 2 which drivesthrough an intermediate wheel 3-a pinion l mounted on the shaft 5. 'Upon the latterl is mounted for instance by the pins 6 the arm 7 carrying the removably secured knives 8.
r.The slide 9 is mounted at one end of the shaft 5 which is rotatable in the bearing` 10 disposed on said slide but is secured to the latter in the lengthwise direction by the4 nut 11. The other end of the shaft 5 is slidable in a ring- 12 which is secured to the pinion 1i, but .it can be actuated by the said pinion by means of a key 13 engaged in a slot 11i.
The slide 9 is secured to the rods 15, slidable in the supports 16, whereby the slide will be suitably guided. rllhe shaft 1 carries a bevel gear 17 coacting` with a like gear 1S keyed to the vertical shaft 19. Said sh aft is provided with a disk 2O upon which is pivoted by the crank pin 21 a link 22 whose other end is pivoted to the slide 9, thus providing` for the reciprocating motion of the slide.
The said crank pin is preferably engaged in a `guide slot in the disk 20, and it can be held at any point therein, so as to regulate the stroke of the slide. By this means I am enabled to adjust the stroke of the carriage according` to the length of the cigarettes to be cut off, so that the speed of the slide durina the cutting operation shall always be exactly the same as the speed of the roll of tobacco to be cut.
The slide 9 carries the guides 23 which are continuously traversed by the cigarette roll 24 and which laterally maintain the knife blades 8.
Obviously, instead of two blades, I may employ a single blade or any other suitable number such as three, four or the like, without departing` from the principle of the invention` The said device may be provided with all desired accessory means, and chiefly with means for sharpening` the said blades during the operation of the apparatus.
Havingthus described my apparatus, what I claim as new therein, and my own invention, is:-
In a device for cutting` off the. cigarette roll which is discharged at a given speed from a cigarette machine, the combination of a slide having` a reciprocating motion, the said motion being parallel with the motion of the cigarette roll and its speed beine; equal to that of the said roll, the said slide containing` at least one rapidly rotating knife,` a rotatable shaft mounted on the said slide and adapted to follow the reciprocating motion of the slide, a driving sleeve in which the said shaft is disposed, means connecting the shaft with the said sleeve whereby the shaft may slide within the sleeve and may also be rotated by the latter, a support whereon the said sleeve is mounted and which prevents the lengthwise sliding of the said sleeve, a rotatable drivingshaft, and means for driving the said sleeve from said drivingl shaft.
In testimony whereof have hereunto aflixed my signature.
ETIENNE DANGER.
