DEAD-ENDING CLAMP.
Application filed August 16, 1924.
This invention relates to dead endingl clamps, und more particularly to dead endingl clamps for use in dead ending wire at long span crossings, such as river crossings.
thas been found in tne cases ot the dead ending clamps heretofore in general use that the vibration ot the wire tends to break the wire near the point where it enters the clamp. The object oit applicants invention is the elimination ot' this tendency toward breakingof the wiie near the clamp.
pplicants clamping` device consists essentiallyv ot two clamp plates, means for securing' these clamp plates in position over the wire, and a grooved wheel so positioned that the end ot' the wire is Carried over the wheel before entering the clamp plates.
The invention will be more clearly un derstood when the following` detailed description is read with reference to the accompanying` drawing, which shows one desirable embodiment ot the invention. Figure l of the drawing is a top view of the device; Fig. is a side view ot the same; and Fie'. 3 shows the clamp in position, attached to a crossarm, and with the wire carried over the wheel and secured. between the clamp plates. Like numerals of reerence in the several igures of the drawing designate correspondingl parts of the device.
With reference to the details of the drawing, the principal member ot the device comprises the clamp plate 4t, the arms 5 and G of the wheel bracket or fork, and the portion 7 adapted to be secured to the crossaini or other support by suitable attaching means. The wheel 8 is grooved and is rotatably mounted between the bracket arms and 6, as is clearly shown in Fig. l, sutiicient space being allowed tor the lree passage ol the wire about or over the wheel. The clamp plate 9 corresponds to the clamp plate portion 4 ot the principal member, and with said portion forms the clampingv means proper. As is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the form et the principal member and the position of the wheel are such that the end of the long span of the wire is carried clear ot` the clamp plates and over the wheel before it enters the clamping means proper. Having been carried over thewheel, the wire is then brought back and clamped between the portion 4 ot the principal member and the clamp plate 9,

lt is readily understood trom the above description and from reference to the drawing that the use of applicants clamp reduces to the mininium the bending` ot the wire at the clamp and eliminates Contact ot the wire 'ith sharp edges. Consequently, the vibration ot the long span will not tend to break the wire.
lt is to be understood that the above de tailed description merely covers one desire.v ble embodiment of upplicants invention and that many modifications and changes muy be made within the scope ot the invention, which is determined by the appended claims.
That is claimed is:
l. A dead ending' clamp comprising a member having a forked portion and a clamp plate portion, a grooved wheel rotatably mounted within said` forked portion, and a second clamp plate, said wheel being so positioned that thn end ot' a span ot' wire will be carried over the wheel before passing between the clamp plates.
2. ltleans tor dead ending a long span wire, said means cor istinp; et a member having a forked portion and a clamp plate portion, a grooved wheel rotatably mounted within said forked portion, and a second clamp plate, said clamp plates and said wheel being so disposed that the long span wire end is carried over the wheel betere entering the clamp plates.
3. A. dead ending clamp comprising a principal member consisting of a clamp plate portion and a forked portion, a second clamp plate, means for securing said second clamp plate in position opposite the clamp plate portion of the principal member, and a grooved wheel rotatably mounted within the forked portion et the principal member, said wheel beings,` so positioned that the end of a span of wire will be carried over the wheel before passing between the clamp plates.
