UNITED STATES tsa ias PATENT QFFIQE.
CLARENCE E. BANKS, OF MONTICELLO, MISSDUEI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JESSE L. BRIGHTWELL, 0F MONTICELLO, .lVIESSOURI.
INSULATOR.
Application filed July 12, 1521.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. BANKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county of Lewis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful insulator, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to insulators for use in supporting electric wires, such as telephone and telegraph wires, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a combined insulator and bracket which can be attached readily to the cross arm or to the poles already in use and which eliminates the costs heretofore necessary in order to keep the ordinary brackets and glass insulators in position.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, chan es in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33, Figure 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a stem having a flattened attaching base 2 adapted to be fastened to a cross arm or other support S by means of bolts 3. The upper or free end of the stem 1 is provided with a rounded head 4 having an arcuate guard or covering flange 5 extending laterally from one side at the top Serial No. 484,156.
thereof and formed within one side face of this edge and below the flange 5 is a transverse groove 6.
A bolt 7 is extended through the center of the head 4 and is provided preferably with an angular portion 8 seated in the head so as to hold the bolt against rotation. Slidably mounted on the bolt is a disk 9 and a nut 10 engages the bolt and is adapted to force the disk toward the head 4.
Seated on the inner faces of the head -i and the disk 9 are washers 11 of insulating n'iaterial, these washers being preferably flexible. A wire 3V to be held by the device is adapted to be placed between the washers 11 and parallel with and at one side of the groove {3. By then tightening the nut 10 the disk 9 will be forced toward the head & and will cause the washers to come together. The washer between the wire V and the head t will be pressed into the groove 6 and the wire will enter this groove and be gripped tightly as shown particularly in Figures 2 and 3.
That is claimed is The combination with a head having a groove in one side, and a flange extending from one end of the head at an angle to said grooved side, of a clamping disk insertable under the flange, insulating washers between the disk and the head for receiving a wire therebetween, a bolt extending laterally from the head and loosely through the disk and washers, and means engaging the bolt and disk for forcing a wire and one of the insulating washers to the groove and for keeping the clamping disk below the flange.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signa ture.
CLARENCE E. BANKS.
