IMPROVEMENT IN lRONlNG-TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,133, dated April 13, 1875; application filed December 18, 1874.

To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELI J. WOLFROM, of Washingtonville, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Ironing-Board; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a vertical elevation; Fig. 2, an end View; Fig. 3, a plan view, with portion of board broken away to show the strips.

This invention relates to certain improvements in ironing-boards; and it consists in the combination, with an encompassing elastic band, of solid incompressible border-strips, adapted to be forced into grooves in the edges of the ironing-board by means of the said elastic band, for the purpose of holding the cover on mole securely, the said solid strips affording three sides, which engage with the edge of the cover in the groove with a frictional contact, and thereby holding the cover more securely, and without allowing it to wrinkle, as would be the case with an elastic band alone.

In the drawing, A represents the ironingboard, having an attachment, B, at one end, to fasten the board to a table, and a folding leg, 0, at the other, for the purpose of supporting the same. D are transverse pieces, which help to brace the board, and to which the attachment B and legs 0 are fastened. E are the grooves upon the edges of the board, in which lit the strips F, that hold the cover upon the board. The said strips may be made of any desirable material, are made to conform to the shape of the board, and are held in the grooves by an encompassing elastic band, G, as shown in Fig. 2. By means of this arrangement I am enabled to hold the ironing cloth or cover neatly and smoothly upon the board, and in such a manner as to be readily detachable for the purpose of washing or renewing the same.- H are longitudinal grooves in the under side of the board, the purpose of which is to counteract the tendency in the said board to warp,consequent upon the vari' able condition of moisture, heat, and dryness upon the upper surface.

I am aware of the fact that a grooved ironing-board has been used with an elastic band to hold the cover on; but an elastic band alone does not afford sufficient frictional resistance to keep the cover secure unless it be made of great strength, in which event the cover is so wrinkled and puckered. as to be impracticable. I therefore disclaim the broad idea of a groove in the board and an elastic band, and confine myself to the devices embodied in the claim, whereby the above-described objections are avoided.

I do not claim, broadly, the application of wooden strips to a grooved ironing board, such combination not being new.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In an ironing-board having grooved edges, the combination, with the encompassing elastic band, of solid non-compressible borderstrips, for the purpose of afl'ording greater frictional resistance for securing the cover, and to prevent the wrinkling of the same, substantially as described.
