Application filed December 29, 1921. 7 Serial N0.'758,738. A 7
This invention relates to apparatus, for heating water for domestic purposes, one of the objects of the invention being to set up the circulatlon of water in such a way that;
thecontents of the water container will be quickly heated and chilling of the contentsby' the admission of the fresh supply of cool Water is practically eliminated.
A further object is to provide a heater of this character which is simple, compact and efficient, and will not get out of order readily.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the nvention resides 1n the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de-- scribed and claimed, it being understood 1 that changes in the precise embodlment' of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a central vertical section.
through the heater.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22, Fig. 1. Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a tank or casing preferably cylindrical and, in the present instance, provided with concavo- convex heads 2 and 3. through the tank at the center thereof and opens through and is supported by the centers of the heads. Thus when this tank is placed above a burner, the hot gases resulting from combustion will be free to flow upwardly within the flue so as thereby to 7 heat the water within the tank at the center thereof.
A concavo-convex partition 5 is mounted on the bottom portion of the tank and co-- operates therewith to form a bottom chamher 6 into which open short tube-s 7 supported by the partition and depending there from. A sleeve 8 is supported by this par- I tition and is spaced from but concentric with flue 4. This sleeve has an outlet 9 at or adjacent its upper end through which water rising within the sleeve is free to discharge radially into the upper portion of the tank.
A water supply pipe 10 extends through the upper head 2 of the tank and downwardly within the tank to a point close to the partition 5. outlet 11 for heated wvhereas heretofore it A flue 4 is extended longitudinally heater may be supported, bv the ine 10 wateris provided in the. upper head '2an d a drain outletg12can be provided 'in the bottom of head i i It is to be understood thatfthis heater is to be used above a suitable burner '50 that the not heat the bottom of 'theitank and also flow upwardly through the flue 4. The tank is .60 gases resultingfrom combustion will completely filled with watersupplied thereto through the pipe 10 and a portion of-the water is also contained in the j chamber 6.
As the water within the sleeve8 is heated by contact with the flue 3 it will rise and discharge into the upper portion ofthe tank 1. The water thus flowing upwardly is displaced by a fresh supply admitted to the chamber 6 from the tubes 7 and which, in turn, isreplaced by fresh water admitted to the bottom portion of the tank from pipe 10.
It has been found in practice that by providing a heater such as described the water is more This is is held away from the chilled lower portion of the Water in tank 1 and is not delivered into the main tank until it reaches the upper portion thereof Where it will remain. Thus it is oossible to obtain hot stantly with a structure quickly heated than by other means.
of this character has been necessary, to heat practically the entirecontents of the tank before hot water could be obtained. By provlomg a chamber 6, an extensive area is.
andas the sleeve8 is of relatively smallcross sectional area as compared with the area of' the chamber 6, a rapid upward flow of the heated water will be' rodu'ced.
due to the factthat the heated Water" Water almost insubjected to the heating action of the burner For the purpose'of facilitating the heating of Water there may be added to the struc-. ture a superheater 13 supported above the top of the tank casing 1 and preferably in the form of a hollow disk. This superand by the outlet pipe 14 extending from the outlet 11. A
lishing communication between the top of pipe 15 may be used for estab' the super heater13 and the pipe 14:. For the purposeof conducting heated water to the super-heater, a pipe 16is extended from the chamber 6 and longitudinally of the flue 4' to the bottom of the super-heater.
A fa1sebottom17 is arranged in the tank I 1 above thepartition 5 so as to form a dead air space above the partition as indicated at 1s.
