' UNITED STATES 1,626,666 PATENT OFFICE.
- HARRY MERCER, F MGDONALD, OHIO.
'ROLLING-MILL GUIDE.
Application led August 14, 1925. Serial No. 50,212.
` may be readily cleaned to remove scale or other foreign matter which might collect thereon.
A further object is to provide a guide having the novel construction, design and combination of parts hereinafter described andillustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation showing my improved guide mechanism as 1nstalled on a rolling mill.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of a portion of the apparatus, the section being taken on the line Il-H of Figure 4. Figure 3 is a sectional plan. Figure 4 is a sectional end elevation on the. line Uff-1V of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a sectional end elevation taken on the line V-V of Figure 3.
Referring more particular] to the drawings, the letters A and B designate the rolls of a rolling mill. The support for the guide comprises a casing portion 2 and a base portion 3. The base portion 3 is adapted to be supported on a rest bar 4 generally forming 35 a part of the mill housing and adaptedl to' receive a fastening bolt 5 which passes through the base 3.
The casing portion 2 of the guide support is provided with a narrowed guideway 6 formed by a raised or elevatedportion 7 of the bottom wall and a downwardly lprojecting portion 7 of the top wall. vA pair of opposing guide members 8 and 9 are mounted in the casing 2 and the guide member 8 is removably mounted in the narrow guideway 6 between the portions 7 and'7.
A guide carrier 10 is mounted in the casing 2 beside the guideway 6 formed by the portions 7 and 7 and carries the other guide 5o member 9. v
The guide members 8 and 9 are removably fixed in the -guideway 6 and carrier 10, respectively, by bolts 11 and 12.
The bolt 11 is threaded through an open-v ing 13 in the top wall of the casing 2 and is engaged in a depression 14 in the guide 8, thereby securely clamping the guide member in position. The bolt 12 extends freely through a transverse slot in the top wall of the casing 2 and is threaded through an opening 16 in the carrier 10 and is engaged in a depression 17 in the guide member 9, thereby securely clamping the guide member iny position in the carrier.
The carrier 10 has its one face slotted and undercut to form a guideway 19 to receive the flanged tongue 20 of the floating wedge 21. The wedge 21 has onestraight side face and the other side face from which the tongue 20 projects is inclined longitudinally.
The flanges 22 of the tongue 20 are engaged in the undercut portions of the guideway 19 so as to cause the carrier 10 to move sidewise as the wedge is movedlongitudinally.
The bottom and top faces of the Wed ev 21 are provided with guide tongues or ri s 23 which extend parallel with the straight side'face ofthe wedge and fit into Straight guide grooves 24 in the bottom and top walls of the guide support and thereby prevent sidewise movement of said wedge.
rlhe guide carrier 1.0 is cut away on its top face adjacent each end forming shouldres 25 which abut against projections 26 on the casing or housing portion 2 of the guide support and thereby prevent longitudinal movement of the carrier.
-The straight side face of the vwedge is provided with a series of teeth 27 which are preferably cut directly on the wedge and from a rack, and au'Operating bar 28 having as series of teeth 29 cut thereon forming a. pinionlike'portion is adapted to be removably mounted in vertically disposed openings in the casing 2 and to have its teeth meshed with'the teeth on the wedge 21 so that rotation of the bar 28 will' cause a lon- Uitudinal reciprocation of the wedge in a direction arallel with the longitudinal axis of the guide, thereby causing the carrier 10 and guide member 9 to move sidewise toward and away from the guide member 8 according to the direction of rotation of bar 28.
The upper end of the bar 28 is squared as I onv the wedge and the teeth 29- on the bar, and
therefore, when the bar is removed the wedge may be readily withdrawn to permit cleaning and removal of such foreign matter.
While I have shown and described only one preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim- A rollingI mill guide comprising a casing,
a pair of opposing guide members, a guide carrier slidably mounted in said casing for lateral movement, one of said guide members mounted in said carrier and movable therewith toward and away from said other guide member, a floating wedge mounted for longitudinal movement relative to said casing, projections on the top and bottom of said wedge and fitted into grooves in said casing to prevent lateral movement of said wedge, a flanged tongue projecting from the one side face of said wedge and mounted in an undercut groove in said carrier, whereby reciprocatory movement of said wedge longitudinally of said carrier will move said carrier laterally, a rack on the other side face of said wedge, and a toothed member removably mounted in said casing and in mesh with said rack and adapted to be rotated to cause a longitudinal movement of said Wedge.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
HARRY MERCER.
