Claims.
This invention relates to locomotives and has special reference to wedge adjusting bolts for frame pedestals.
Locomotive frames areprovided with upper and a lower members connected by pairs of upright members .forming'slots for the reception of the journal boxes for the driving axles. A wedge serves to holdthe journal box against the knockingproduced by side stops. Because of the inter- 1 ruption of thebottom frame member at the pedestalsor slots thereis a tendency for the frames to breakthese'pedestals and this tendency is resistedfby a tie bar or binder spanning the bottom of eachslot and bolted to the bottom of the lower frame-member at each side of the pedestal. The wedges are usually adjusted by bolts passing through the tie bars-and connected removably to the wedges.
Inmany previous arrangements breakage of a 0; bolt or wedge necessitates removal of the tie bar orbinder forrepairs. This is highly objectionable because of; loss of time and because of the a practical impossibility of restoring the binder to exactly the same position which it occupied bethe;sleeve;has to be made much larger than the bolt:size.andeither thebinder-is weakened by a large opening or the bolt has to be made too small to have proper strength.
A secondimportant object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement for this purpose whereina bolt of proper size may be used without unduly weakening the'binder;
Iii-one fcrm'of such a device provision is made for aqbolt'ofpropersize working in a slot in the tie bar, but no adequate provision is made for preventing accidental displacement of the bolt from its proper position.
Athird important object of'the inventionis to 50.;provide animproved device of this character wherein there is provided a novel arrangement of parts. especially designed to prevent accidental displacement of the bolt.
Withthe above and other objects in view the invention; consists in, general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings'and specifically claimed.

In the embodiment of the invention as here shown; there is disclosed. a portion of a locomotive frame having an u per member 10 and i. spaced sections 11 of thelower membenthese seotions-being connected to-the upper member by pedestal legs 12. A binder or tie bar 14'extends across the space at the bottom of the legs 12 and the frame is provided with tapered 1ugsl5 so; which engage correspondinglyshapednotches 16 formed in the top of the binder. Bolts 17-pass through the ends of the binder l4 andthroughthe bottom members 11 of the frame and rigidly secure the binder in position. A wedge l8-bears against one of the pedestallegs-lzand between this wedge and the other pedestal leg is a journal box l9'which is free to slide up and down in the pedestal. The wedge is adjustable verticallyon. the leg 12 and the contacting surfaces of. the leg and wedge areinclined to the vertical in such manner that the wedge moves toward theremaining leg as it is moved upwardly. By thismeans the sliding fit of the box 19-may beregulated so that the box moves freely upanddownv 95. but yet cannot move laterally toproducea knock.
In the lower end of the wedge is a T.-shaped slot 20 wherein is normally fitted the head 21 and flattened upper part 22 of the shank of a wedge adjusting bolt 22 which extends downwardly through a slot 23 formed longitudinally in the binder, this slot beingof just sufficient. width to freely accommodate the bolt body. Moreover, the head of the bolt is laterally flattened as by grinding on the sides of the head of a square headed bolt until it is reduced to such' width that it will pass through the slot 23. This flattening of the head isreifected at right angles to the flatteningof the shank at 22. The lower part or stem of the T-slot 20 is just sufiiciently i a a wide to accommodate the flattened portion 22 so that when the bolt is engaged in the slot it cannot rotate. Bolts 24 extend through the binder in spaced relation to the respective ends of the slot 23. The heads of these bolts may, if desired, be countersunk into the binder. Fitted on the lower endsof these bolts is a locking plate 25 which is provided with openings 26 for these'bolts and with an opening 27 for the adjusting bolt. When this plate is thus fitted on the bolts it locks the adjusting bolt from movement out of the slot 20, but when this plate is removed the adjusting bolt may be moved along the slot to be freed from the wedge and it may then be given a quarter turn and withdrawn through the slot 23. A yoke or bridge piece 28 is'also provided with suitable openings for the bolts 22 and 24 and above and below the bridge piece the bolt 22' carries the adjusting nuts 30 by which the bolt 22' and consequently the wedge 18 may be vertically'adjusted. On the lower ends of thebolts 24 are'nuts 29 by means of which both bridge piece and locking plate are held securely in position. i V
- With this construction it is merely necessary, for repairs or replacements of the bolt 22, to remove the nuts 30, whereupon the nuts 29 may be turned to free the bolt 22' from pressure, the
lower nut being entirely removed. When the bridge piece and locking plate are dropped oif, the bolt 22' can be withdrawn through the slot 23. This is accomplished by moving the bolt laterally out to the end of slot 20, tilting its head out of the slot 20 and turning the head, so that it may be withdrawn through the other slot 23.
There has thus been provided a simple and efilcient device of the kind described and for the purposes specified.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the principles thereof.
It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is desired to include all such as come within the scope claimed.
What is claimed as new, is:-
1. In a device of the kind described, a side.
frame having a pair of spaced pedestal legs, a binder spanning the space between the lower ends of said legs and provided adjacent one leg with v and provided at its lower end with a T-shaped slot opening through the bottom of the wedge,
bolts securing said binder to the frame, an adjusting bolt having its head in the head portion of the wedge slot and its shank extending downwardlythrough the stem portion of the wedge slot and down through the slot in the binder, a locking plate having an opening therein through which the lower end of said bolt passes to fit closely therein, and bolts securing the locking plate against the under side of the binder to hold the bolt against movement longitudinally of the slot, said T-slotgand bolt being arranged to co act and prevent rotation of the bolt.
2. In a device of the kind described, a side frame having a pair of spaced pedestal legs, a binder the inner face of the leg adjacent said slot and provided at its lower end with a T-shaped slot opening through the bottom of the wedge, bolts securing said binder to the frame, an adjusting bolt having its head in the head portion of the wedge slot and its shank extending downwardly through the stem portion of the wedge slot and down through the slot in the binder, a locking plate having an opening therein through which the lower end of said bolt passes to fit closely therein, bolts securing the locking plate against the under side of the binder to hold the bolt against movement longitudinally of the slot, 2. bridge plate carried by the last mentioned bolts and through which said adjusting bolt passes, and adjusting nuts on the adjusting bolt above and below the bridge piece, said T-slot and bolt being arranged to co-act and prevent rotation of the bolt.
3. In a device of the kind described, a side frame having a pair of spaced pedestal legs, a binder spanning the space between the lower ends of said legs and provided adjacent one leg with a slot extending vertically through and longitudinally of the binder, a journal box wedge bearing on the inner face of the leg adjacent said slot and provided at its lower end with a T-shaped slot opening through the bottom of the wedge, bolts securing said binder to the frame, an adjusting bolt having its head in the head portion of the wedge slot and its shank extending downwardly through the stem portion of the wedge slot and down through the slot in the binder, a locking plate having an opening therein through which the lower end of said bolt passes to fit closely therein, and bolts securing the locking plate against the under side of the binder to hold the bolt against movement longitudinally of theslot, the shank of said adjusting bolt being flattened in the part engaging in the stem portion of the wedge slot to fit closely therein and prevent turning of the bolt.

In a device of the kind described, a side frame having a pair of spaced pedestal legs, a binder spanning the space between the lower ends of said' legs and provided adjacent one leg with 'a slot extending verticallythrough and longitudinally of the binder, a journal box wedge bearing on the inner face of the leg adjacent said slot and provided at its lower end with a T-shaped slot opening through the bottom of the wedge, bolts securing said binder to the frame, an adjusting bolt having its head in the head portion of the wedge slot and its shank extending downwardly through the stem portion of the wedge slot and down through the slot in the binder, a locking plate having an opening therein through which the lower end of said bolt passes to fit closely therein, bolts securing the locking plate against the under side of the binder to hold the bolt against movement longitudinally of the slot, a bridge plate carried by the last mentioned bolts and through which said adjusting bolt passes, adjusting nuts on the adjusting bolt above and below the bridge piece, the shank of said adjusting bolt being flattened in the part engaging in the stem portion of the wedge slot to fit closely therein and prevent turning of the bolt.
5. In a device of the kind described, a side frame having a pair of spaced pedestal legs, a binder spanning the space between the lower ends of said legs and provided adjacent one leg with'a slot extending vertically through and longitudinally of the binder, a journal box wedge bearing on the inner face of the leg adjacent said slot and provided at its lower end with 'a T- shaped slot'opening through the bottom of the slot, a locking plate having an opening therein through which the lower end of said bolt passes to fit closely therein and bolts securing the locking plate against the under side of the binder to hold the bolt against movement longitudinally of the slot.
