The object of this invention is to provide a clevis, with particular means for retaining the clevis pin in operative position, and particular means for housing the retaining element.
A further object is to provide a clevis, the main portion of which may be formed of channel iron or the like, the channel portion being on the outer side, and the housing for the retaining device of the pin being mounted in the channel, and secured as indicated below.
A further object is to provide a device in which the U-element is formed with an end portion constituting a lip offset from the web of the channel, the housing for the retaining pin being slotted at one end and adapted to engage the lip, the housing being secured at its opposite end by means of a rivet or the like.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The U-shaped member, or yoke member, of the clevis includes the upper and lower legs or arms 10 and 12 and the curved portion 13, and the entire frame or yoke thus provided may be of channel form, the ribs 14 and 15 constituting flanges being on the outer side and extending entirely around the U-shaped element. This provides a con- .struction of special strength and rigidity, and moreover has a particular function in aiding in the mounting of the housing referred to below.

apertured as shown at 16 and 17, and the clevis pin or bolt 18 extends thru these apertures, said pin being of approximately7 usual form, but provided with a bore 19 thru which a retaining device or locking bar extends.
This locking bar or retaining device is designated 20 and provided with a pointed end portion 21 adapted to readily enter the bore 19. The pin, bar, or retaining device 20 is mounted within a housing 22 of the form shown in perspective in Figure 3, this housing including an upper slot 24, and aperture 25, a slot 26 in the end of the housing and a base extension member designated 27.
The end of the channel element, or the upper leg 10 thereof, is provided with a forwardly extending offset lip 28 which may be formed of the same piece of metal, and which is adapted to project thru Slot 26 of the housing, said housing being secured at the other end by means of a rivet or the like 29.
The retaining device or pin 20, constituting alocking element, acts under the influence of a spring 30 which encircles the element 2O and imparts thrust toward the left in Figure 1, one end of the spring abutting the right hand end of the housing, and the other end of the spring abutting a collar or the like 81 rigid on element 20, said collar also serving to mount a thumb inember 33 by means of which it is operated for releasing the locking bar or pin 20 from the clevis pin 18. The latter may therefore be instantly released, and when again applied, the tapered end 18 of pin 18 engages the tapered end -21 of the locking device 20, so that the latter is caused to recede. Or in any event that operation will result if the thumb member 33 is only partly retracted, or if other corresponding conditions are present.
It will be observed that the housing is mounted with the fewest possible separate retaining elements, and cannot readily become displaced, all lateral thrust being opposed by the side flanges 14 and 15, and any tendencyof longitudinal movement being opposed by lip 28 integrally formed and by rivet or other securing device 29.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:-
1. In a clevis, a yoke member of channel iron construction, a housing mounted on the upper side of the yoke member and within he channel, said housing and yoke member being apertured, u Clevis pin passing thru the apertures, and means operating in the housing igor engaging land retaining the pin against displacement.
2. In a.
