W. S. LITTLE.
SAFETY PIN.
APPLICATION FILED 950.21.1915.

WALTER S. LITTLE, OF BORDEAUX, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO PHILIP G. MORRIS, OF BORDEAUX, WASHINGTON.
SAFETY-PIN.
Application filed December 21, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER S. Lrr'rnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bordeaux, in the county of Thurston and State of Washington have invented an Improvement in Safety-Fins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in pins and has particular reference to a bracing device for the shanks or members of safety lIlS. I p Heretofore, with safety pins commonl employed the movable member or shan containing the point is often bent and opened owing to undue strain thereon, sometimes occasioned by securing several thicknesses of material together, the opening of the pin often resulting in injury to the wearer.
The present invention is designed to overcome these objections by providing a brace slidably mounted upon one of the members of the safety in and adapted to be detachably connected with the other member thereof whereby said members are effectively prevented from being bent intermediate their ends, thus avoiding detachment of the I pin point from its shield or retainer.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a brace formed from a single sheet of material and having its body portion of substantially T-shaped formation, the transverse or cross piece thereof being provided with sleeves or bearings for receiving one of the members of the pin, the other end of the body portion being bent to provide a hook for detachable engagement with the other member of said pin.
A further object is to provide the body portion of the brace with bearings or sleeves on each side thereof whereby the bearing adjacent theshield of the pin will contact the same, should the brace be inadvertently .moved toward that end of the pin, and
thus prevent the hook end of said brace from interferin with the operation of fastening and un astening said pin.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thus reducing the cost of manufacture to a minimum, durable, and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expres- Specifleation of Letters Patent.

, sions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- F1gure 1 is a side elevation of the safety pin showlng the invention applied thereto. Flg. 2 1s a similar view looking from the other s1de. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the l1ne 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the bracing device. Fig.
5 1s -a rear elevation of the pin' showing the device applied thereto.
Referring more particularly to the accompanylng drawing, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, the numeral 10 indicates the relatively stationary member of a safety pin of ordinary constructlon having the coil spring 11 at one end and the shield or retainer 12 at its other end adapted to receive the pointed end of the relatively movable member or shank 13 of said pin. It is, of course, understood that the invention may be applied to other forms of pins than that shown in the drawing.
The bracing device 14 is formed from a single sheet of material, preferably metal,
and is cut into a substantially T-shaped formation as best illustrated in Fig. 4. The body portion, at one end, has the transverse or cross piece 15 which is slightly curved in order to fit about the member 10 of the pin. The extremities of the cross piece 15 are provided with oppositely disposed sleeves or bearings 16 which are adapted to receive the member 10 therein whereby the bracing device is pivoted to said member and movable. longitudinally thereof. The opposite end of the body portion 14. has its extremity bent to provide a hook portion 17 which receives the relatively movable member 13' of the pin and detachably engages the same when'the point thereof is that the bearing 16 adjacent the shield 12 will limit the movement of the brace toward said shield and thus prevent the hook portion 17 from coming in contact with the same and interfering with the opening of which are bent at ight angles thereto and 15 the pin. substantially parallel to sald narrow strip,
What is claimed is: said extremities being bent to provide bracing device for safetypins of subspaced bearings for receiving the member stantially T-shape and formed from a sinof the pin opposite that with which the gle sheet of material comprising a relatively hook engages whereby the device is pivoted 20 narrow strip extending transversely of and thereto, said device bein movable longitubetween the members of the pin'and having dinally of said pin mem ers for a distance a hook at one end for engagement with one exceeding the width of the device. of saidpin members, the width of said hook being comparatively small relative to the -WALTER LITTLE length of said pin members, the other end Witnesses: of said narrow strip having lateral oppo- WM.
