Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY T. BUDGE, OF CEDAR FALLS, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCALES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,024, dated April 13, 1875, application .tiled February 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. BUDGE, of Cedar Falls, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scales; and I do hereby'declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accon'ipanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
rllhe nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a scale designed more particularly for farmers7 use, as willv be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure lis a plan view of my scale. Fig. 2 is a section of the same through the line .r x, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a detached view of a part thereof. f
A represents an iron frame or cap, open in front, and supported upon four legs, B B, which are inserted in sockets formed on the under side of the frame. On the top ofthe frame A is a rack, C, for holding weights, and on the under side are two chilled-iron loops or hooks a a, to receive the knife-edge bearings of the circle-beam D. The circle-beam D is provided with a counter-balance, l), at each end of the circle, and has four knife-edge bearings, d d and d d, the outer ones, d d, resting in the hooks a a, and the inner ones, d d', holding a self-lookin g trip or bag-holder, which is kept in place by a guard, c, over the ends of the bearings, and fastened to the scale-beam. From each of the bearings d depends a bar, E, having a hoolnf, at its lower end, for suspending the platform. rllhe bar E is slotted, and in the slot is pivoted a lever, h, weighted upon its outersyend, and provided at its inner end with a toothed or flanged cross-bar, i. Above the lever h, in the slot of the bar E, is pivoted a trigger, la, to lock the lever in place while holding the bag. I/Vhen the lock or trigger is lifted, and the bag dropped, the lever li returns to its place by means of the weight or counter-balance on its outer end. An oval ring, I, is held in the ianged bars i, and the mouth of the bag drawn through and held by said rin 0". In the center of the beam D is a projection, D', with two ears, m m, on its under side, between which the scalebeam G is pivoted by a pin passing through an elongated slot, n, in the beam G. On the inner end of said beam is a hook or projection, m, to catch in a recess when the beam G is moved inward, and thus hold the beam in proper position for weighing. By drawing out the beam G the length of the slot u it can be folded under so as to be out of the way when not in use. Attached to the scale-beam is a rod, p, with a sliding poise, s, to be held in place by a set-screw, and on the end of the beam is a loop, t, to receive the ordinary stem for holding additional weights. H is the weighingplatform, made of tapering shape, as shown, and suspended from the hooks ff.
Ihis seele is simple and durable, and can be easily manipulated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. rllhe combination of the slotted pendant E with hookf, weighted lever 7L, with toothed bar rl and ring I, and lock L", all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. A
2. The combination of the circle-beam I), with extension D', having ears in m, the folding beam G, with slot n and hooksf, rod p, and poise s, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
hi HENRY T. if EUDGE.
mark.
I/Vitnesses:
JAMES TAGGART, DAVID DAvrs.
