Description

A. CARPENTER..
WEIGH SCALES.
Patente@ June 6,1876.
I No. 178,358.
moms.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALANSON CARPENTER, OF ANGOLA, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELE AND JOSEPH SMITH, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT INl WEIGH-SCALES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,358, dated June 6, 1876; application filed May 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALANsoN CARPENTER, of Angola, county oi' Steuben, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Ilnprovement in Scales, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a sectional side elevation of my improved scales; and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same on line c'c, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved Weighing-scale for determining the weights of substances, and also the pressure of steam in a boiler; and it consists of a'sliding post connected by a bottom cross-head and lever-rods with weighted elbow-levers having outer in- (eX-arms, swinging in a suitable casing or In the drawing, A represents the sliding post, to which-the article to be weighed is applied by being placed on a top platform in case of lighter articles, or by bein g placed 'on a larger platform, hung to a loop, B, at the lower end ofthe sliding rod, when heavier articles are to be weighed.
Rod A slides in aguide-tnbe, a, secured to suitable supports, and is balanced by means 4oi' swinging and Weighted elbow-levers O, that are hung to pivots or knife-edges a of top arms b ot' the guide-tube a, and connected by pivotedl lever-rods d, attached to the shorter arms of the elbow-levers to a rigid cross-head, A', at the lower end of rod A. The longer weighted arms of the bell-crank levers C are provided with curved and graduated indexarms D, that indicate, by the distance they are carried above the upper edges or xed indicators of the inclosing-casing on box E, the Weight of the articles placed on the` platform.
The weighted arms of the elbow-levers may, be provided with sliding weights, adjustable by set-screws, so as to set the graduations on the index-arms correctly to the fixed indicators or balance-points of the casing.
`In place of twoindex-arms, four may be used, which, it' properly adj usted, will coincide With each other, though the scale-base may be out of the horizontal position.
The scale may be employed with advantage to weighing light or heavy articles, being very durable, as no springs are employed, and it may also be used by connecting the Weighingrod with a steam-boiler, for the determination of steam-pressure in the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentrlhe combination of a sliding platform-carrying rod, having a iixed bottom cross-head, with pivoted lever-rods and fulcrumed swinging and Weighted elbow-levers, having curved indexarms, substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose specilied.
