Welt-Knife.

HE GRAPHIC C0.PHDTO.-L|TIL39&41 PARK PUGLN-Y- ED STATES Pan IMPROVEMENT IN WELT-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,013, dated April 13, 1875; application filed March 1e,1e75.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. BAR- TON, of Georgetown, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a cer-* tain new and useful Improvement in Welt- Knives, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure I is an isometrical perspective view of the under side of the knife; and Fig. 2 a sectional view, showing the upper side.
Like letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in the diiferent figures of the drawin g.
My invention relates to that class of weltknives which are designed for trimming or planing the upper side of the welt; and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more effective device of this character is produced than is now ordinarily employed.
In the use of nearly all knives of this description with which I am familiar much difficulty is experienced in planing or paring the welt properly and rapidly without cutting the upper of the boot or shoe.
My improvement is designed to obviate this difficulty, and to that end I construct and arrange the various parts ofthe knife in a manner which will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following description: I
In the drawing, A is the handle or haft; B, the head-stock; G, the clamp; D, the knife or cutter; I, the finger; and J ,the guard. The clamp G is secured to the stock B by means of the set-screws h h, and is provided with an upwardly-projecting flange or lip, F: The knife I) has a downwardly-projecting lip or flange, E, and rests upon a ledge or rabbet, (not shown,) formed in the head-stock B. The finger I has a guard, J, at its outer end, so constructed and arranged as to prevent the corner of the knife, or its principal cuttingedge 70, from coming into contact with the upper of the shoe, a throat for the passage of the shavings being formed between the knife and finger, as shown.
In securing the knife into the head-stock it is placed on the ledge or rabbet with its flan ge E downward, or as shown in Fig. 1. The lip F of the clamp G is then hooked over the flange E and the screws h It turned in, the knife being adjusted in respect to the guard J, so that the outer point of the edge It and the point of the guard will be coincident.
The knife D is also provided with a cuttingedge, k, which is curved near the outer side of the knife to form the point e, as best shown in Fig. 2. The object of this curved edge and the point e is to assist in trimming the welt and rounding its outer edge when desired. The back of the head-stock B is rounded or curved outwardly, and provided with a lip or flange, L, and rib M, forming a burnisher for finishing the edge of the welt or sole after using the knife.
Having thus explained my invention, what- I claim is 1. In combination with the head-stock B, provided with the finger I and guard J, the clamp or holder G provided with the lip F, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the head-stock and clamp, the knife D, provided with the flange E, and having a curved cutting-edge, K, and point c, all substantially as set forth.
WILLIAM R. BARTON. [L. s.]
