FRAUD-PREVENTING DEVICE.
Original application filed March28, 1923, SerialNo. 628,354. Divided and this application filed March machines, of the kind which, when a correct coin is deposited in the machine, will deliver an article of merchandise in exchange therefor.
The primary object of the invention is to provide in such a machine means by which a coin may be deposited therein, together with means for preventing the withdrawal of such coin after the machine begins to'operate.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a vendingmachine of the class described, means for preventing the operation of the machine by depositing a correct coin therein and the subsequent withdrawal of such coin by a string, wire, or other means once the machine has begun to operate.
This application is a division of my application for vending machine filed March'28, 1923, Serial No. 628,354.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will in part be apparent and in part appear from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a coin-receiving housing adapted to be mounted on any preferred form of vending machme;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the housing shown in Fig. 1 and'partly broken away to show the coin-stopping plate;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the vertical housing shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section'taken through the housing shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, showing the parts in the position they occupy when the machine begins its operation.
Referring in detail to said drawings, the housing 11 preferably consists of a vertical housing 12 having therein a vertical slot 13, and the housing 14 having therein a curved slot 15, said housings preferably being joined or formed in one piece and provided with laterally extending or other flanges 16 for convenient attachment to the main body of any preferred form of vending machine, in

A preferred form of vending machine with which the present invention is particularly designed to cooperate is the machine shown and described in the above-mentioned application, Serial No. 628,354.
So much of the construction of said pre ferred form of vending machine as is neces sary to a full disclosure of the present invention and its mode of operation will now be described. 7
The preferred form of vending machine with which the present invention is used is provided with any preferred form of coinreceiving member, herein illustrated as having the form of a rotary plate member 17 fast to a rotatable shaft or pin 18, which may be mounted in suitable bearings and provided with a suitable handle by which it may berotated, not shown. The rotary coin-receiving member 17 is provided at its upper end with a notched portion-19 adapted to receive a coin 20. In the form shown, the notched coin-receiving portion of the late 17 is located above and to one side of the shaft or pin 18, upon which the rotary member 17 is mounted.
The coin-receiving member 17 is provided with an eccentric cam slot 21 ada ted to receive a pin 22, which is fast to a sli e 23 located parallel to and in sliding contact with the coin-receiving member 17 on one side thereof. On the other side of the coinreceiving member 17 may be located a second slide similar to the first and connected thereto by the pin 22, or other means may be located on the other side of the coin-receiving member for the purpose of preventing the coin from falling out of the notched portion 19 in the coin-receiving member.
In the preferred form, when the coin lies in the notch 19, it is located between the two plates shown at 23. It will be seen that by means of the cam slot 21 and the pin 22, when the shaft 18 is rotated, it will carry with it the rotatable coin-receiving member 17 and that the coin-receiving member 17, by rotating in a clockwise direction as shown in the drawings, will cause a lateral sliding movement of the slide 23, which is connected thereto by the pin 22 inthe slot 21, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and of the drawings.
The movable slide 23 may be used to opadapted to swing as one piece back and forth in the housing 11, as shown in Figs. l and 5 of the drawings.
It will be observed that the curved portion 29 of the pendulum member 2? lies directly opposite the coin slot 13 in the housing 12, and is of substantially the same Width assaid slot, whereas the curved plate 26 lies below and to one side of the slot 15 to permit a coin to pass across the side of said plate and into the coin-receiving notch 19.
A coin-abutting and guiding flange or plateSS is formed or secured horizontally at one end of .the upper edge of the curved plate .26, and when a coin .is deposited in the machine, it passes downwardly through the slots 13 and 15 and across the face of the curved plate 26 between the guide plate 38 and theedge 29 on the pendulum member, coming to a stop in the coin-receiving notch 19..
\Vhenthe partsarein the positions shown in Fig. 4, it will be seen that by the above means there is provided a free passage for the coin from the outside of the housing to, the notch 19.
In orderto prevent "the withdrawal of the coin after it hasbeen deposited in the machine, the mechanism is preferably provided 'with asuitable .form of latchidevice to prevent retrograde movement thereof until the parts have completed the necessary movement to deposit the coinin the coin box providedand 'to deliver an article of merchandise in exchange therefor. Asuitable form of .latch mechanism is that shown in the application above referred to, of which the present application is a division.
.A plate 65 havinga cam edge 67 isflocated horizontally within the housing 14: and is arranged closely under the curved member 26 and slightly above and to the right of the coin-receiving member 17.
It will be seen that when the mechanism is operated by the rotation of the shaft 18 in a clockwise direction, as seen in the drawings, and the coin-receiving notch .19 being locatedaboveand to the left of the shaft 18,
as seen in Fig. 1, the coin will'in operation have a combined upward movement and movement toward the right as the shaft 18 is rotated.
In Fig. 5 the coin is shown in the position it occupies at the fbeginning of this movement. It will be seenthat asthe movement continues, the coin will be carried under the plate 65, and as soon as a part of the coin passes under this plate, the coin cannot be withdrawn'from the. machine, for the reason that its advancing edge will be prevented from moving upwardly by the plate 65 and the opposite edge of the coin will be prevented from moving upwardly by the shoulder 66 on thecoin-receiving member 17, formed atthe edge of the notch .19, as shown inFig. 5 of the drawings.
It will also be notedtthat'thecam edge 67, being arranged in a diagonal direction, will have the effect .of turning thecoin into a plane at an angle to the plane which it occupied in the coin-receiving member, and thatthisturning-effect would placethe coin in a position from which it could not be drawn upwardly through the narrow coin slot. l
As soon as the machine is .put into operation, the coin-receiving member .17 has not only a forward movement which carries the coin under the plate 65, but also hasan up} i ward movement which carries .the coin upwardly nearerto the level of said plate, and, also has a rotary movement, the effect of which is to bring the shoulder .66 into a position over the coin instead of at its side to cooperate with the .plate65 impreventing the withdrawal ofthe coin.
At the end of the forward .movement of the;1nechanism,-thecoin is ejected fromthe notch 19 by any suitable means, such, for example, as the means shown in my copending application .hereinabove referred to, and the parts are returned to their original position, for example, by the means shown in said application, for the purpose of receiving another coin in exchange for another article which will be delivered by the machine.
It will be observed from the above description that the present invention provides a means for preventing the withdrawal of a coin deposited in the machine, which means becomes effective substantially as soon as the machine begins to operate; and that, more particularly, :the coin-withdrawal preventing means includes a stationary horizontal plate with which cooper-ates .the coin receiver and holder, whic'li'first moves the coin forwardly under the plate, secondly,
raises the coin nearer to the level of the plate, and thirdly, rotates with the coin to bring a second coin-withdrawal preventing means into a position to cooperate with the plate 65, for the ,pur ose of preventing withdrawal of the coin from the machine.
I claim- 1. A vending machine having, 'inrcombination, a casing provided with a coin slot through which a coin may be inserted therein and a stop plate extending transversely of said slot and positioned to be engaged by a coin drawn upwardly from the interior of said casing toward said slot, whereby said coin may be deflected to a position transversely of said slot and thereby prevented from being withdrawn through said slot.

A vending machine having, in combination, a casing provided with a coin slot through which a coin may be inserted therein and a stop plate extending transversely of said coin slot with the edge thereof which is adjacent to said coin slot, inclined at an angle and adapted to be engaged by a coin drawn upwardly from the interior of said casing toward said slot whereby said coin may be deflected to a position transversely of said slot and thereby prevented from being withdrawn through said slot. 7

In a vending machine adapted to receive a coin and deliver an article of merchandise in exchange therefor, a housing member provided with a coin-slot, a horizontal coin-stopping plate having a cam edge adapted to turn a coin when engaged thereby into a plane inclined from the plane of the coin slot, and a coin receiver adapted to receive said coin and conduct it toward said plate.

In a vending machine adapted to receive a coin and deliver an article of merchandise in exchange therefor, a housing member provided with a coin slot, a horizontal coin-stopping plate adapted to shift a coin when engaged thereby into a plane inclined from the plane of the coin slot, and a rotary coin receiver adapted to receive a coin and conduct it toward said plate.
5. In a vending machine adapted to receive a coin and deliver an article of merchandise in exchange therefor, a housing member provided with a coin slot, a horiceive a coin and deliver an article of merchandise in exchange therefor, a housing member provided with a coin slot, a horizontal coin-stopping plate adapted to shift a coin when engaged thereby into a plane inclined from the plane of the coin slot, and a coin receiver adapted to receive a coin and conduct it toward said plate and having a shoulder adapted on movement of said receiver to overlie said coin.
7. In a vending machine adapted to receive a coin and deliver an article of merchandise in exchange therefor, a housing member provided with a coin slot, a horizontal coin-stopping plate adapted to shift a coin when engaged thereby into a plane inclined from the plane of the coin slot, and a rotary coin receiver adapted to receive a coin and conduct it toward said plate and having a shoulder adapted on rotation of said coin receiver to obstruct said slot.
8. In a vending machine adapted to receive a coin and deliver an article of inerchandise in exchange therefor, a housing member provided with a coin slot, a horizontal coin-stopping plate having a cam edge adapted to turn a coin brought in contact therewith into a plane inclined from the plane of said coin slot, and a rotary coin receiver adapted to receive a coin and conduct it toward said plate and having a I shoulder adapted on rotation of said coin receiver to obstruct said coin slot.
