Description

1 March l 927, E. GEMEINDER LOCK-UP COVER FOR RECEPTACLES Filed Nov. '7, 1925 IHH Il f INVENTO Genfer/Mer PATENT OFFICE.`
EMIL GEMEINDER, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LOCK-UI COVER FOR RECEPTACLES.
Application filed N'ovember 7, 1925.
My invention relates to new and useful Yimprovements in a lock-up cover for receptacles, and has for its primary object to provide. an exceedingly simple and effective prevent accidental displacements thereof orV its removal' by dogs, cats and the like when such receptacle is used as a garbagecan.
Another object of the invention 1s to 1mprove the construction ofthe receptacle covered by my Pat-ent Number 1,220,975, bear ing date of March 27, 1917.
A further object of the invention is to provide a structure wherein the cover may be removed and the receptacle swung to a dumping position, and when returned to its normal upright position the cover will descend and seat itself.
A still Yfurther object of the invent-ion is to provide a structure wherein the cover will be held against sideways movement relative to the receptacle until the bail has been moved to a certain position, and also wherein the cover will be held in certain open positions so that it will not contact with the ground or other surface upon which the receptacle is resting.
lith these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements' hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1, is a side elevation of the recep tacle embodying my invention showing the cover in a closed position, and illustrating by dotted lines a position that may be assumed when the cover is open.
Fig. 2, is a fragmentary sectional view of the receptacle in the region of one of the guide members or strips.
Fig. 8, is an enlarged perspective view of one of the guide members or strips.
In carrying out my invention as herein embodied, 5 represents a receptacle or container constructed from any suitable material and of any desirable shape or configuration, the upper open end of which is normally closed by a suitable cover 6, the lat- Serial N o. 67,487.
ter having bearings 7 projecting from the outer edge or circumference thereof at diametrically opposite points, and said cover is further provided with a handle 8 on the top thereof in line with the bearings 7.
On the receptacle at diametri-cally opposite points are fastened the guide members or strips 9 so formed as to provide offset ends 10 so that when .said members are secured to the receptacle by rivets 11, or their equivalent, passing thru holes 12 in the 0H- set ends of the guide members, the central portions 13 of said guide members will be spaced from the outer surface of the receptacle as plainly shown in Fig. 2, and in these central or body portions 13 are formed longitudinal slots 14.
On each of the guide strips or members 9 is a keeper 15 which extends out fromk the outer face of the guide strip or member across the longitudinal slot therein to accommodate a limb of a bail 16, passing thru a bearing 7, the end of which is turned in so as to form a trunnion 17 projecting into and thru the slot 14 so as to be slidable in said slot. The keeper is fastened a short distance below the upper end of the slot 14. in order to leave a portion of` the slot projecting above the keeper a distance equal. to at least the diameter of the bail.
Qn each guide strip or member are also a pair of rests 18, one on each side of the keeper 15 and preferably so positioned that their upper surfaces or seats 19 are in the same plane as the upper edge of the keeper 15, and if found desirable these rests may be formed of the same strip of material from which the keeper is produced.
Secured to the receptacle adjacent the lower end or bottom thereof and disposed at a suitable point between the guide members 9 is a handle 20 which may be gripped for tilting the receptacle when moving it to a dumping position.
lVhen the cover 6 of the receptacle is in a closed position, the inturned ends or trunnions 17 at the lower ends of the bail limbs lie in the lower ends of the slots 14 of the guide strips with intermediate portions of the bail limbs in the keepers 15, and the inter-connecting member of the bail overlying the cover and its handle 8 so that even tho the cover might be slightly raised it cannot be moved sidewise due to the engagement of the bail limbs with the keepers and the trunnions with the guide members at oints below the keepers as will be obvious. hen it is desired to remove the cover, the handle 8 is gasped and .pulled upward, and the continued upward `mveinent of said cover will lift the bail 16 by sliding its trunnions in the slots of the guide members until said trunnions reach the upper ends ofthe slots 14 above the upper edges of the keepers l'at .which time, due tothe disengagement of the bail limbs `from the keepers said kbail may be swung outward with the cover into substantially the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, 'where the limbs of the bail will Contact with one of the rests 19 on each guide lmember with the trunnion ofthe bail 1n contactwith the edges ofthe guide memlbers at the upper ends of the slots thereby holding the cover in anopen position above the'supportmg surface on which the `receptacle `is setting. If it is desired to tilt the v receptacle to a dumping-position, the handle 8 of `thercover is retained in the hand ofthe user, and the yreceptacle lifted from its supporting surface at. which time the handle 20 of the receptacle may begrasped andthe ren ceptacle swungfabout lthe trunnions. `For 'transporting theureceptacle from place to `ward causing the coverto automatically find itsjseat, as thebail will be held in an upright position and the bearings on the cover willguiclethe latter to its ,properplace 0f course -Idonot wish to be limited 'to the exact details of `construction as herein shownas these maybe varied within the receptacle, vertically, longitudinally slotted guide members on the outside of the receptacle at dialnetrically opposite points, keepers carried by the guide members and disposed across the slots below the upper ends of the latter, `a bail having trunnions at the" lower ends of its `limbs projecting into the slots of the .guide members, the limbs of said bail coacting withthe keepers when the bail trunnions are below the upper `edges of the keepers to prevent swinging movement of said bail, such swinging movement being permitted `when the trunnions are above the upper edges of the keepers, and a coverslidably connected with the bail limbs.
2. The structure set forth in claim 1 wherein means are carried by the guide members to act as vrests for the bailv limbs when the bail is swung outward.
3. A receptacle, guide members fastened to the side wall of the said receptacle at diametrically opposite pointsand having the portions between the ends spaced `from the receptacle wall'and provided with vertical, longitudinal slots, a bail `having inwardly extending trunnions at the lower extremi ties of the limbs of said bail projecting into the'slots ofthe guide members, keepers dis-` posed across said slots adjacent the upper ends thereof, thru which the bail limbs pass, rest-s on both sides of the keepers to receive the bail limbs when the trunnions are in the 'upper ends of the slots,'a cover for the receptacle and bearings carried by the cover and coacting with the bail limbs for slidably connecting the cover to the bail.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto aflixed my signature, Y,
` EMIL GEMEINDER.
