rlhe invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its otlicers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the 5 United States, Without payment to me of any royalty thereon, in accordance with the act of March 3.y 1883.
The subject of this invention is a loader for guns.
Vf hen guns, especially of the anti-aircraft type,
re maintained in high elevation to permit rapid tiring` the problem of ramming heavy projectiles into the gun requires that mechanical assistance be resorted to.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a traveling rammer mounted on the loading` tray and actuated to advance the round into a gun by means of a cable which is trained over pulleys.
To these and other ends. my invention consists in the construction. arrangement7 and combination of elements, described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
A practical embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying' drawing,
in which.
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a loader constructed 1n accordance with thc invention; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the apparatus, the tray being shown in the inward or ramming position.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of .reference A tray 5 pre-pamtor)` on. which the round is placed to loading' it into the gun is secured to a pair of bent arms 66 Vwhich are mounted for oscillatory movement on The usual handle Serial No. 10,340.
MARCH s, isss; 22 STAT. L. s25.)-
8 is provided on one of the arms for moving the apparatus to position the round in line with the bore of the gun.
Attached to the tray 5 is a rail 9V upon which is mounted by means of rollers 10-10 a traveling rammer 11, having a bent finger 12 extending over an edge of the tray and adapted to engage behind the round. Secured to the rammer is a cable 13 trained over a pulley 14 and guide rollers 15-15 and provided with a handle or grip 16. The forward extremity of the rail terminates in a toe 17 which limits the forward movement of the rammer while a stop 18 is also provided on the rear end of the rail for a similar purpose.
After advancing a round and arrangement of elements as constitute the preferred embodiment of my invention,
it is nevertheless desired to emphasize the fact that interpretation of the invention should only be conclusive When made in the light of the subjoined claim.
claim ln combination with a gun, a loading tray mounted' for oscillatory movement on the cradle thereof. a rail on the tray, a rammer movable on the rail and having a ingei extending within the tray for engaging a projectile` means on the rail for limiting 7 movement of the rammer, a cable attached to the rammer, pulleys over which the cable is trained` and a handle for moving the THOMAS A.
