COMBINATION AUTOMOBILE TRUNK AND TABLE.
Application filed M17 27,
This invention relates to an automobile trunk which may be conveniently converted into a table and a plurality of benches adapted for seating purposes.
An object. of this invention is to provide an automobile trunk of the type attachable to an automobile, in which is embodied a novel construction adapted to be conveniently converted into a table and benches for seating purposes.
Another object of this invention is to .provide a trunk of novel constructionand design which can be readily converted into a table and a plurality of seats. H I
Another object of this invention is to provide a container which may be conveniently converted into a table and benches by detaching the top and bottom from the sides thereof.
lVith the above-recited objects and others of a similar nature in View, the invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig.1 is aperspective view of a trunk embodying our invention, in which a part thereof is broken away to show the construction thereof;
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the top of the trunk showing one way the supporting legs of a bench and a table may be carried;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a table assembled from the parts of the trunk, the sides of the trunk being shown in dotted lines and a part of the table being broken away to show the construction thereof; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sup porting structure of one of the benches, the top thereof being shown in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings the numerals 1, 2 and 3 designate respectively the top.
, bottom and sides of a rectangular shaped container or trunk. The sides 3 of the trunk are divided vertically into two sections joined together by two hinge members each of which is comprised of two bars a suitably secured to the inside surface of the said sides 3 and movably attached together at their ends by rivets 5. The hinge members are secured to the sides 3 near the top edge thereof and adjacent the point where they are vertically divided into two sections. thereby permitting the two sections comprising the sides 3 to be swungupwardlyuntil the top edges of the said sections contact with each.

other and form the top of a table, as shown in Fig. 3. Extending horizontally inside the ends of the sides 3, near the bottom edge thereof, are four openings or recesses 6 into which the ends of the legs 7 fit. These re cesses, four in number, extend vertically when the sides 3 are unfolded. and serve to maintain the legs 7 in a vertical position.
As shown in Fig. '2, the legs 7 may be maintained against the underneath surface of the top 1,by placing them under two crossbars 8 which are secured to and spaced apart from the said top by suitable screws or bolts. To provide suitable supports for the top 1 and bottom 2 when they are to be used as seats or benches, we attach the ends of four vertically extending legs 9 and two horizontally extending bars 10 together by two rods 11, each of which extends loosely through two of the legs 9 and through two of the horizontally extending bars 10. The legs 9 are held in an'upright position by hinge members 12, which are comprised of two hinge bars joined loosely at their ends by a pin The opposite ends of the said hinge bars are to be folded adjacent the said bars when the,
supports are to be placed in the top or hot- The dimensions of the support comprised of the bars 10, the legs 9 and the rods 11, are such as to permit the top 1 or bottom 2 to fit over the top of the said support, thereby providing a suitable bench or seat. 1
As shown in Fig. 2, a seat or bench may be constructed in accordance with our invention by loosely fastening the legs 9 by any suitable means such as bolts to the downwardly extending edges of the top 1 or the bottom 2, and afiixing the hinge members 12 to both the legs and the said downwardly extending edges of the top or bottom. This latter described form permits the legs 9 to be folded inside'the downwardly extending edges of the top or bottom and adjacent its inside surface, thereby providing a compact and convenient construction.
As shown in Fig. 1 the inside of the con tainer or trunk, after the supports for the table "and benches are folded and placed lie-l in traveling position over the sides 3 by any suitable nieans such as bands or clamping devices.
While the construction herein shown and described represents the preferred form of convertible trunk, it is obvious that many changes in the form, size and proportions may be made within the scope of the ap pended claims Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of our invention. P
Having described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s: i a
1. A combination trunk and table comprising, a container having a detachable top and a detachable bottom, a plurality of side members joined together by hinges which are adapted to be converted into a table top and supports carried inside the container for supporting the top, bottom and the table top.

Aronvertible trunk comprising, a detachable top, a detachable bottom, a plnrality of joined side lllfill'lbOI'S adapted to be converted into a table top, means for supporting the side members after they have been converted into a table top, separate means for supporting the detachable top and separate means for supporting the detachable bottom.
3. A convertible trunk comprising, a plurality of side members joined together by hEnges, which said side members are adapted to be converted into a table top, a detachable top, a detachable bottom, and a plurality of supporting members carried by the top and the bottom for supporting the top, the bot tom, and the side members after they have been com'erted into a table top.
4:. A convertible trunk comprising, a detach able top, a detachable bottom, a plurality of side members joined together by hinges and adapted to be converted into a table top, and supports carried by the top and the bottom for supporting the top, the bottom and the table top.
5. A convertible trunk comprising, a dechable top, a detachable bottom, a plurality Ede members connected together by hinges and adapted to be converted into a table top, and means for supporting the side members after they have been converted into a table top.
