Among the many advantages of combination furniture of this character is that a Single piece of furniture may be used for sev eral different purposes or as diierent pieces of furniture when the@ elements are separated so that only a single furniture set is required in order to obtain the same result as is usual with a number of sets of furniture, and such an arrangement is particularly beneficial under'present living conditions where a single room is often used as a bedroom and living room. 4By the use of my combina-tion furniture, persons living in an apartment of few rooms may utilize one of them as a bedroom at night, for instance, andas a living room during the day time, and there will be no visible, indication that the room is sometimes used as a bedroom.

With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims. Y Y

n carrying out myinvention as herein embodied, represents an article of combination furniture shown as a .bed and comprises a number of main or primary elepitchers or lother receptacles ments, .16, 17, 18 andV 19, the Velements 17 and 18 being substantially identical.

Each of the elements include a seat frame 20 supported by legs 21 which may be of vany desirable configuration and braced in any suitable manner, a back 22 and a seat 23 hinged to the front of the seat frame 20 by means of hinges 24 and when the hinged seat is in an'open position as shown in Fig. .1, '1t is supported by a leg 25 socketedin the seat, and said leg is permanently attached to the seat by means of a link 26 having one end pivotally connected with the seat and the other end pivotally connected with the leg, and-.when said le is not in use, its end is withdrawn from ie socket inI the seat and said'leg laid upon Ithe seat and there held by a hook 27, or its equivalent, as shown 1n Fi 2.

32 and 33 upon the part 34, with the part 33 uppermost, and when in this condition, the mattress will fit within seat frame of the element to which it is attached, and more particularly into a storage compartment 38 provided therefor, and three of the elements, as 17, 18 and 19, are provided with these storage compartments and while the storage compartments in the elements 17 and 13 may hold something in addition to the mattress sections, the storage compartment in the element 19 is particularly adapted for holding all the slats and some bed clothes. In order to assist the withdrawal of the mattress seetion from its respective furniture element, a strap 39 is provided which has one end at tached to the back portion of the seat frame, while the other end is free and projects from the front of the seat frame.

The elements are'provided at the back, as shown in Fig. 4, and at the front, as shown in Fig. 2, with suitable fastening devices, such as hooks 40 and eyes 41, so that vthe several elements `may be temporarily fastened together.

The element 16 when separated from the other elements may be used as an arm chair, and in such case it is preferable that/the back 22 thereof be hinged to the back of the seat frame by means of hooks 42, while the arms 43, each of which consists of a standard 44 and arm pieces 45, are detachably connected to the seat and back in such manner that these parts may tilt relative to the parts to which they are attached` and to accomplish this, the lower end of the standard 44 and the inner end of the arm piece 45 are bevelled as at 46. and the connection between the standard and arm piece is made bv the hinge 47. To ordinarily hold the back 22 in an upright position While permitting it to swing backward when desired a spring 48 is interposed between the standard 44 and the arm piece 45,;'when the back is to be maintained in an upright position, a fasteningr device 49 such as a hook and eye is attached to the parts'of the arm. To prevent the back 22 from being swung outward too far, suitable members 50 may be hinged at their upper ends to the rear face of the back 22, and as these will always swing in a vertical position, they will act as sto s to limit the outward movement. of the bac 22 when contacting with the surface on 'which the arm chair element rests. The front of the arm chair element 22 may be prevented from tiltingr backward by means of a weight 51 between the front supporting legs.

the holders including a ring or loop to act as a support for a pitcher, bowl or the like, and the holder that is to support the pitcher may have combined therewith a hook 58 to engage the pitcher handle.

Beneath the seat frame of the arm chair element 22 are mounted a number of guides 59 between which are slidably mounted the drawers 60 to hold combs, brushes and other toilet articles. 22 are brackets 61 to receive the ends of a mirror supporting` rod 62.

The elements 17 and 18may be used as stiff back chairs when the iseats are in their closed positions.

The clement 19 in addition to its back 22 may be provided with a side 63 so that it can be used as a corner chair, and in order that the seat may be readily swung outward to the open position the upholstered panel 64 oi" the side 63 is hinged as at 65. As this element is to be used as the head of Vthe bed, a head piece 66 is hinged to the inside of the seat and may be swung up into endwise alignment with the side`63 so that the two together complete the head.

The seats of all the elementsvhave suitable draperies 67 secured thereto that hang down therefrom when the seats are in either the open or closed positions'so that the supporting parts will be invisible.

From the foregoing description it will be particularly noted that the .combination furniture constructed in accordance with my invention may be utilized as a bed with the elements fastened together, and with the seats closed it may be used as a couch, but by separating all of said'elementseach may then be used as a single piece of furniture, and therefore a person having but a single room that must be used both as abedroom and a livingr room may put the parts to- ,f fether as a bed at night and separate them for use as chairsin the daytime, and during the latter time, the room will have none of the appearance of a bedroom. i

Of course, I do notwish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein On the back of the elementshown :is these may be varied within the limits of .the appended claims without cleparting from the spirit of my invention. l
