GEORGE M. SHARRARD, OF WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO BOOK SAVER COMPANY, OF PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK, A PARTNERSHIP COIVIIOSEZD OF GEORGE M. SHARRARD, OF WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK, AND JOHN P. SHEA, OF GREEN- WICH, CONNECTICUT.
REENFOROED BOOK COVER.
Application filed. April 24-, 1924. Serial No. 708,814.
My invention relates to book covers, and more particularly to a reenforced covering made of paper or other suitable material which is adapted to be cut and folded so as to fit over and protect the covers of a book.
The main objects of my invention are to provide a removable book covering which may be economically manufactured and quickly and easily fitted over the permanent covers of a book; which is so constructed as to provide a double layer of material along the edges adjacent each corner of the front and back covers; which is so made that all indicia and printed matter may be placed on one surface of the covering and the latter quickly and accurately centered on books of various sizes so that the printing will appear in its proper position; and which has guinmed portions and scale or indicating lines so arranged that the ordinary sizes of books may be covered by a single standard size of covering and the flaps so located that the edges of the book will not catch thereon during normal usage and so be subject to injury.
With these and other objects in view, as will be apparent in the following disclosure, my invention resides in the combination of parts set forth in the specification and covered by the claims appended hereto.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate one embodiment of my invention, and in which like reference numerals indicate like parts:
Fig. l is a plan View of the printed side of the covering in its uncut marketable condition;
Fig. 2 is a View of the reverse gummed side when partly cut and folded;
Fig. 3 is a detail showing the upper right hand printed corner after a cut has been made to form the cover flaps;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail corresponding with. Fig. 3 showing the reverse unprinted side of the sheet after the triangular flap has been folded back;
Fig. 5 is a plan view showing the corner flaps folded over the triangular flaps;
Fig. 6 is a similar view after the end flaps have been folded, when the covering is ready to be placed on a book; and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of an opened book with the covering in place thereon.
In accordance with my invention, I propose to make a book covering of suitable material, such as a heavy kraft paper, which is cut in a rectangular shape and is packed and sold in this shape. In order to guide the user in covering a book therewith, I provide the sheet with various sets of printed or scored guide markings so arranged that one may quickly mark thereon the dimensions of the book to be covered and cut it to shape in accordance with suitable directions furnished with the covering, and then paste the flaps permanently in position. These printed lines comprise three sets, one for centering the book on the sheet, another for locating the central tongues which fold over the back and the third for locating the side and end flaps and particularly the corner reenforcing flap. Gummed portions are so located relative to these lines that when the sheet is out to fit a book, the exposed flaps may be secured in place.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, this rectangular sheet of paper 10 has two lines 11 and 12 printed or otherwise marked thereon adjacent the upper and lower edges to indicate the center of the paper, whereby a book may be located centrally and symmetrically of the covering. A covering of this type is made larger than the size of the book when opened in order that flaps may be folded over the three edges of each cover. The covering is intended to be cut in from the top and bottom edges and each side of the binding of the book cover to provide two tongues which. are bent under and form a double thickness adjacent the edges of the book binding. To locate these tongues, I provide two sets of covering printed or scored lines 13 and 14 opposite the center line 11, and 15 and 16 opposite the center line 12. In practice, one spreads out the book on the covering and makes marks with a lead pencil adjacent the four corners of the book back and then cuts parellel with the lines 13 to 16 inclusive from the outer edges to these dots, thus forming tongues 21.
In order to locate end flaps which may be folded over the upper and lower edges of the covers, I provide sets of parallel printed or scored lines 17, 18, 19 and 20. By cutting parallel therewith from the edges of the sheet to dots marked thereon to indicate the positions of the corners of the extended book, upper flaps 25 and lower flaps 26 are termed which are adapted to be bent inwardly over the adjacent edges oi the book covers.
These sets of lines 1? to 20 converge outwardly to ards the center lines so that when the end tiaps 25 and are formed, a small triangular portion is left adjacent each corner, as shown in Figs. 2 and 8, which is bounded by the cut 80, defining the outer edge of the llaps 25 and 26, the upper or lower edge 31 ot the covering and an i1naginary line :12 drawn parallel with the ends $3 5 of the sheet id its indicated in Fig. 1-, earl! of these triangular portions S-lis intended to he tolded inwardl along the. line .lil so as to lie against the unprinted [lap of the ci'wering. The tlaps 35 are then folded inwardly about the imaginary lines ac, which are in line with the upper and lower edges ot the book. as indicated by the dotted lines 3? shown in Fig. The side flaps 38 which comprise the portions between the smaller "folded flaps 35 are then folded inwardly towards the center of the covers into the positions shown in Fig. 6.
The triangular flaps ill, which are now positioned as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6, form with flaps 35 and 38 a tubular portion having two thicknesses of paper along the edges adjacent the corners. The book is placed on its back over this covering and the two covers are bent backwards and inserted into these folded tubular portions. The small triangular flaps 3st are intended to lie against the flaps 38, so as to provide the double thickness adjacent the corner edges, but it the user should insert the book covers in such manner that flaps 3% lie against flaps 35, nevertheless the book is wholly covered and may be used that way. After the book has been put in place the end : llaps 25 and 26 are :t'olded over the portions 38 as shown in Fig. 7.
For the purpose of holding the flaps 25 and 26 in place, I provide gunnned portions an which are located on the opposite side of the paper from the lines 17, 18, 19 and 2t) and are of such size, shape and location that they will serve for the major portion of the diilerent sized books which are ordinarily in use. The gain is preferably located on the paper as illustrated in the drawings, and since the unused gumnied portions are tolded under, they do not contact with the users hands and are not moistened except where they are to be pasted down.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent; is:-
l. A book covering con'iprising a substantially rectangular sheet oi paper having lines running obliquely from the top and bottom edg s near each corner towards the adjacent end margin which lines are so positioned that end and side flaps may be :i'orn'ied by cutting along said lines, said parts being so cut and arranged that each corner portion ot each side ilap tolds inwardly and the side flaps told thereorer in such a 1na11- nor to form concealed pockets haying double thicknesses to protect the book corners, the end tlaps told inwardly over the top and bottom edges of the book and the outer faces of the covering are smooth and formed of: a single layer of paper.
A book covering com nising a rectangular sheet of material having markings on one side thereof to locate tongues centrally of the top and bottom edges of the sheet, lines running obliquely from the top and bottom edges near each corner towards the side margin to locate side, end and corner flaps which may be cut to lit a given book size, and guinmed portions on the opposite side of the sheet from the obliquely arranged lines, said parts being so cut and arranged that triangular portions of the corners of each side flap told outwardly 011 a line which defines the side edge of the book cover and the corner laps told inwardly thereover along a line delining the top and bottom edges of the book cover so as to lie against; the inner face of the side llap, the side flaps in turn fold over the corner flaps to form concealed pockets having corner portions of double thickness, and the adjacent end flaps fold over the side flaps and are fastened thereto by said gummed portions.
Signed at New York city, New York, this 18th day of April, 192i.
