l Application filed' January i This invention relates Vto receptacles or boxes.
'The invention more particularlyy relates to receptacles especially adapted for packaging articles Jfor shipment and the box or recepf tacle hereinafter described is adapted for ymany uses7 such as packaging fragile articles vide a receptacle having'a plurality of com- Y.
partments and Yfurthermore a construction that can be economically .manuifactured.
yAnother object of the invention is torprovide a receptacle 'sov constructed-and arranged that the covers. or the .ends thereof can be easily secured and sealedlin closed position thereby easily rendering possible the detection of any tampering or opening of the receptacle. Y
Further ob] ects ofthe invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings which form a part of this application and in which,
Fig. 1 is an elevational view, vpartly broken away and partly in section,V showing a: receptacle constructed in accordance with the invention. n l v Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevational View taken substantially von line 2 2 ol Fiel l.. i
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a blank which when folded forms a cover for one end of the receptacle.
Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the blank in Fig. 3, folded. Y
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional elevation taken on substantially on line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional elevation of another shape of box constructed in accordance with the invention, and
Fig. 7 is a top plan view on a reduced scale showing one of the spacing discs used in the form of receptacle illust-rated in Fig.L 1. Y
The invention brieliy described consists of a boX or receptacle having a plurality of compartments therein preferably -tormed of tubular members. These tubular members are secured within a sheath or ybinderv which ,tightly 'encloses the members.Y The two ends of the receptacle are closed by means of 25, i924. semi No. 688,388.
covers and the covers are secured in position by tabs extendingsubstantially.at* right angles to the body portion of the cover and projecting into wedge shaped spaces or open` ingsv formed between 'the binder or sheath and the tubular members.
securingthe covers in position. The receptacle may comprise a single sectionsuch as shown in Fig. 6 or a plurality oi longitudinally spaced sections las illustrated inF ig. 1. In order to form a seal for the ends of the receptacle a `cord may be passed through the central tubular memberV (see Fig.l and 'the ends of the cord secured together on the outside of the sheath orfbinder. A label or seal can then be pasted or otherwise secured over the ends of the cord. Further details of the invention will appear Vfrom the ytollowmg description. y c
the receptacle has seven compartments, six of the compartments'as shown at 15 being grouped around and radiallydisposed with respect to a central compartment 16. 'fIt These projections c, are tightly wedged in the spaces thusirmlyY In lthe form of the invention illustrated should be understood however, Vthat the inl vention is not limited to any particular number of compartments. The compartments 15 and 16 arevfor/med Vof tubular members and.l these members may be secured in the position shown in Fig. by placing the tubular members 15 upon a flatsurface upon a cord or-tape,. placing the member 16 upon the members 15. Then by'drawing the ends of the cord together, the tubularv members 15 will be grouped about the member 16 as shown in Fig. If desiredrthemember 16 may be coated with some adhesive substance lsuch as glue and thus as the membersr 15 are grouped around the central member they will be secured thereto. y
After the tubular members have been as` sembled in the manner shown in Fig. 2 a binder orVr sheathv 1T is wrapped around or otherwise secured around these members tightly enclosing them. Y Y Y Then these compartments are formed arounda central compartmentvthe sheath or binder will be substantially hexagonal in section and itshould be noted that a Yplurality of wedge shaped spaces 18 are formed between the tubular members and the sheath or binder. r Y v `The tubular members may be of any length and maybe out to the proper length either before or afterl they are bound.
TAC,
the sheath as illustrated in Fig'. Q. connection attention is directed to the tact `eli'eet-ively withstand Il desired the receptacle or container may comprise a plurality of sections, A, B, G and D as shown in Fig. l, the sections beinji` separated by discs 19 formed of corrugated cardboard or any other desired material.
The ends of' the receptacle are closed by means of covers 20. Fig. 3 shows a top plan view oil. a blank trom which a cover is iornied This blank has jjinojectine' portions 2l and tabs QQ. To 'forni the cover the tabs 22 are folded with respect to the body portion ot the blank about the told lines i223 to the position shown in Fig. #land these tabs may be bent slightly more i'l" desired to 'l'orin an acute angle between the tabs and the body portion ol the cover. Then the cover is placed on the box the tabs 22 are inserted in the spaces between the tubular members l5 and the sheath or binder 1T and the edges of the tabs are wedgedtightly between the adjacent portions of the members l5 and In this `tabs will center themselves as the cover is placed on the receptacle. Theil the covers are so disposed the portions r2-jl project beyond the sheath or binder and to remore the cover these projectingr portions are enn gaged and the cover is lii'ted.
jln the torni ot the receptacle illustrated in Fig. l corrugated cardboard dises 19 are placed at the ends of the receptacle beneath the covers.
It it is desired to seal the receptacle the covers have 'formed therein openings 24 and the discs 19 and Q0 have termed therein central openings 25. A cord 30 is passed through the central compartment 16 and through the openings in the discs and the covers, the two ends of the cord being;` secured together as shown at 8l. A label or seal is then secured over the connected ends of the cord. In order to open the receptacle it will be obvious that the cord must be broken or the ends unt-led and before the ends may be initieel the seal must be mutilated.
4ln Fig. 6 there shown a receptacle formed of one section having seven compartments, the two corers being secured in position in the manner hereinbefore described.
From the t`oregoing' description it will be seen that a simple and practical container has been described and that this container can be economically manufactured and will rough usage encountered in shipping.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been particularly illustrated and described it will be understood that the invention is capable o'l modiiication and that iurther changes in theconstruction and in the arrangement ot the various cooperating parts may be made without departing 'from the spirit or scope ot the invention as ex pressed in the 'Following claims.
that .l claim is:m
