AFC. AXFORD BASKET GRATE HEATZDEFLECTOR Filed Jul yl9, 1926 INVENTOR. filial? fly 'd- BY i6 TORNEY.
Patented Feb. 15, 1927.
ALLAN c; AXFORD, or SAN rnancrsco, CALIFORNIA.
' V BASKET-GBA'I'E 7 HEAT nErLE oroa1 Application filed July 19,
Other objects of the invention will be apparent as the description proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout the several figures of the drawings and of which there maybe modifications. V
Figure 1 is a front elevation .of a grate with this deflector applied thereto,
Figure 2 is a view in end elevation of the grate withthe deflector applied thereto, and
Figure 3 is a side elevation of one of the detachable deflector supports which may be used on grates of any kind without special end castings. I
The numerals 1 and 2 indicate theends of I the basket grate; 3 the back, and 4 thefront,
said grate being made in the usual manner and provided with legs 5, 6, '7 and 8.
At each back corner the grate is provided with an upwardly extending support as indicated at 9 and 10, and each of these supports is provided with'an open curved slot as indicated at 11, and with a series of notches 12 on its upper edge, there being stops 13 and 14 on each standard to prevent the deflector from being pushed too far forward, or too far back. I
The deflector consists of a plate 15 with lugs 16 and 17 at its lower corners, and with shoulders 18 and 19 about the mid portion of each end'to rest upon the notches 12 of the standards 9 and 10 to determine the inclination of adjustment of said deflector. The deflector is placed in position by pushing its lugs 16 and 17 into the open slots 11.
If it is not desired to make up grates especially with this deflector, the deflector may be secured in place by use of the detachable standard 20 at each upper corner of the grate, and it is secured to the grate 21 by 1926. Serial No. 123,232.
In practice the deflector is picked up with a poker by inserting it in the hole 15' enough 5 to lift it over the notches 12 and it is then either moved forward or back to a point which will give the desired heat deflection.
without causing smoke to be discharged into the room, the exact position being more or 7 less determined by the character of the draft produced in any given flue. j That is, with a good flue the deflector can be pushed allthe way forward, while with a poor flue it will not be pushed forward so much.
' Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows, but the construction may be modified in carryingout the invention as shown in the drawings andin the above particularly described form thereof,
within the purview of the annexedclaims:
1. A. device of the class described comprising the combination with a basket grate of'a pair of standards carried thereby, 35
notches in the tops of each of said standards, pivot slots in each of said standards, a deflecting plate having shoulders adapted to engage said notches, lugs on said plate adapted to pivot and slide in said slots whereby the angle of said plate may be adjusted by lifting it out of one pair of notches into another pair thereof. v 2. A device of the class described comprising the combination with a basket grate of a pair of standards secured to the back of said grate on each side thereof, adeflector plate pivotally mounted in slots in each of said standards, notches in the tops of each of said standards, shoulders on each side of said plate 'adaptedto engage said notches to permit the plate to be adjusted to several different inclinations with respect to the back. of said grate.
3. A device of the class described com- 1 ards adapted to be engaged by shoulders on said plate to hold said plate at diflerent angles. J i
4. A device of the class described comprisgage said notches, whereby the deflecting ing the combination with a basket grate of plate may be raised to shift it from one in- 10 detachable standards carried thereby, said clination to another inclination as may be standards having a series of notches in their required.
