This invention relates to typewritingmachines, especlally to ribbon vibrating, guiding and guarding devices as-used in connec tion therewith,. and more particularly to meansv for preventing the ribbon from foulingwvitli' the ty.pebar guide of an Under wood portable typewriter.
Ordinarily, whenv raising the platen, the lower. edge of the ribbon is carried high above the type-bar guide, and when the ribbon is lowered to its normal position there is apossibility for it to catch on the typeguide. This is apt tohappen when operatingrapidly, especially when the platen s lowered before the operator releases the typeke l t isth-erefore a feature of the invention to provide a combined. ribbon vibrator and shield whichwill effectively avoid such occurrences, and the'device is made extremely light to avoid overthrow of theribbon, due to acquired momentum in its rapid; movenient, and also to reduce effort on the part of the operator.
It is a further object to provide a combined ribbon vibrator and'shield that can be made from a single piece otsheet-nietal in an economical manner, and which can be substituted forcorresponding existing portionsot' a typewriting mechanism without material change in thesame. t

Having thus described my invention, I claim: v
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type-guide, of a ribbon-vibrator having a substantially Ushaped body including npwardly-directed arms, ribbon-receiw mg eyes extendmg outward ad acent the ends ly-projecting horns carried upon the ends I 01"? said elements for preventing the ribbon from'fouling on said type-guide, the horns extending slightly below the bottom edge otthe ribbon. said horns also having portions extending upward to points adjacent the top edge of said ribbon.
5. A ribbon-vibrator for a typewriting machine having a body including a pair of upwardly-extending arms, eyes carried by said arms for receiving and guiding a ribbon, ribbon-shielding elements extending inwardly toward one another from the arms, and horns carried by the ends of said elements and including ribbon-shielding portions extending both above and below said elements, the ribbon-guiding eyes being so disposed relatively to said horns that the lower portions of the latter extend below the bottom edge of the ribbon, while the upper portions of said horns extend to points adjacent the top edge of the ribbon.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type-guide secured to a fixed part of the machine, of a vibrator arranged to receive aribbon and to oscillate the same into difierent horizontal planes adjacent the type-guide, said vibrator including widely spaced loops for supporting the ribbon, and inreaching ribbon-shielding elements carrying vertically-disposed horns tern'iinating below the lower edge of the ribbon. at each side.
