Description

EnLWooDC. kinumana, or nnjsrn'orinnronn, NEW nsnY.
`'rnrirrn'ras CHASE non sronfien;
Application led e'oruary My present invention jhas to I do with printers chases; and it consists in therchase possessed of theprac'tical advantages hereinafter ascribed to it. A c p Theinvention in all'of its details Will be v fullyv understood from the following ,defV
' scription and claims when the ysame are read Y my Vinventionin connection Awith the drawings, accompanying and formingpart ,of this specification, in whichrry Figure `l is a planvieiv vof the chase constituting the preferred embodiment of .Figure 2 1s a n ofmetallic tubing assit appears precedent to ,beingincorporated in my novel chase. n Figure 3 is an enlargedr fragmentary vie-W illustrating the manner inwvhich the lengths of the tubes are occupied with Wood sections lor other appropriate filler sections, andl the manner in which the coiners of the-rectangular framesvformed by the tubesy are reinforced through the mediumof metallic Yor' alloy reinforcing blocks l Figure L 1s an enlarged, fragmentarysec.-
` tion taken in the'plane indicated bythe line VFigure 5 isa fragmentary. vviewv making clear thefaet that ymy novel chase is more than type high in accordance With the material featurey of my invention. d c
Figure 6 is' a detail viewta'ken at right angles.V to Figurel and shoivingnthe manner in which the reduced ends of the section of each cornerjreinforcement are lapped.
p Similary numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in vall ofv the views 'of the drawings.' d Y Among other elements my novely chase vcompris'esvatube 1,'re`ctangular in cross-section, Figure'c, and formed of bra-ss or other appropriate sheet metal.f The tube l is con tinuous,jFigure 2, is provided With miter y ends 2 and isgnotched at intermediate Ypoints in its length asy designated vby 3 for the forming Vof the three imiter jointsr offthe chase in addition tol the `joint'formed by the confronting ends 2.
In addition to the tube l, the chase comY-V` prises Vfiller lengthsf, preferably of Wood,
and corner reinforcements eachof `Which is formed of tvvoi sections of metal, alloy or other appropriatematerial. A The corner reand therefore detailed description lof the one shown in Figures 3 and 6 will suffice to detailvietv showing a length a4, ieee.v serialno'. eases;
impart a deniteunderstanding of the four. f' 'y By comparisoi'i ofF- igures 3 and 6, it will be 1 readily understoodthat the corner reinforcement referredI to is made up `of a section 1- Wit'h. a reduced end Il?, and a section l with a. reduced end 1d, the said sections laand l being arranged at right angles to; each other, and the reduced ends Il and ldpbeing *dis*n posed in lfappedrelation. -The walls of the tube l are made as thin as possible, and theV v.vvoodfillers 4, serve -to precludeor prevent` collapse of the said Walls andv to lend rigid-y ity tothe Walls vand to the'chase as a- Wh'o'lez 5 In this the Wood fillers '4E'. are materially assisted by the-metallic or alloy corner reinfcrcements, and in this latter connection it Will be; understood thattlie tivo'sections that enterinto each` corner rv'reinfor'cement .are arranged as shown, yand leach cornerof; the chase, formedin the manner descrined,elec
tric'ally Welded', riveted, orctherivise joined i' so thatat each corner, there is Va solid insep'- f arable Joint.v Manifestly such joint lends inv creased stiffnessand strengthto the lchase as a Whole and preserves the rectangular.
form ofthe same.V v Y c In present practice, many of the forms run upon smal-l hlghspeedv presses are eX-` pensively time consuming to lock toregister.'
In 'the ycase ,ofrsupplementary runs -i-t would beeconomical;` if this l'oclrfup could. be preserved.. The cost ofthestandard-below type'- high chases and the racks necessary foi-their accommodation',*necessitate the Vvbrea,kindupof these forms becausey any advantagegained by holding Vthem in chase is overcome by the tiefup of investment in the chases andk the consumption of room and cost'of the racks necessary for vtheir accommodation.A The forms mustA necessarily kbe relocked for supplementary runs. vThe elimination of the expense is desirable..l Itis to be understood, therefore, that it is an accomplishment of-my invention that this end maybe obtained by providing a chasecapable of beingA cheaply ico manufactured, light of Weight but of sufficient strength for the purpose, and of being more than type-high so that amultiplicityv I Y 4 of such chases ymay be piled orwstaclred together Withoutinjury to their contents and so that no'rack or other special fixture 'is needed to accommodate them.V lThis invent tion, therefore, provides a means lto econominforcements are identical vin `construct1on,`.
ically preserve vthe lock-upv and register of printers formsv andto convenientlyy store them between runs,` the change from one type of chase to the other being facilitated byy mere loosening of the quoins before the change 1s made and tightening them thereafter without in any manner disturbing the, justification of the form proper, the two types of chases having approximate inside measurements.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the chase higher' than type-high constitutes an important feature of my invention, and that my novel mode of reinforcing relative' arrangement of parts as disclosed, Vmy invention being defined by my append-ed claims within the scope of which changes in form or structure and in arrangement may beI made without departure from my invention. Y
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a printers chase greater in height than the standard height of type for the purpose set v forth.
2. A printers chase comprising a continuous metallic tube forming a rectangular frame, metallic reinforcements in the corner portions of said tube, and fillers snugly oc cupying the portions ofthe tube intermediate of said corner reinforcements.`
3. A printers chase comprising a continuous metallic tube forming a rectangular frame, metallic reinforcements in the corner portions of said tube, and fillers snugly occupying the portions of the tube intermediate of said corner reinforcements, the joints of the tube at the corners of the frame being mitered, and the said corner positions of the ing permanently'joined. i l
Ll. A printers chase comprising a continuous metallic tube reduced to aiframe of rectangular configuration, metallic reinforcetube and the said metallic reinforcements be` ments inthe corner portions of the frame,
and fillers in the frame and intermediateof Asaid corner reinforcements, each Acorner reinforcement beinginade up v,of sections dis-V posed at right angles to`cach other and lapped, and the said tube and the sections of the corner reinforcements being permanently joined, or connected. Y
5. A printers chase comprising a continu-4 ous metallic tube reduced to a frame of rectangular configuration, metallic reinforcements in the corner portions of the frame,
and fillers in the frame and intermediate of said corner reinforcements,each corner'4 reinforcement being made up ofV sections disposed at. right angles to each other and lapped, and the said tube and the sections'of the corner reinforcements being permanently joined or connected; the said tube, the sections of the corner reinforcements and the fillers being of rectangular cross section, and I the tube in cross section being of greater height than the standard height of type.' y
6. The improvement in the printing art which consists in securing type in a chase of greater height than the type, whereby a plu# rality of chases maybe superposedy without injury to the contents.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
