Description
'c. sTRAuss FOLDABLE COMB Filed Oct. 15, 1926 Patented Feb. a. 1927.
. CHAELES' STRA S v This invention relates to: im orovements in 'foldable combs, and has for its 'ma/in obf ject the provision of an improved comb of this nature, that may be opened or unfolded and rigidly maintained in the unfolded-or operative position by means of a slide provided for this purpose.
7 Another object of my invention is to'pro vide a comb of'this nature with an inset or non-projecting hinge that will be shielded or covered up when the comb is unfolded and ready, for use, providing a perfect fiatsided "comb and preventing hair from becoming caught on the said hinge,
A further object of this invention is to provide a comb of this nature with a hinge substantial and inexpensive'in construction.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a combof this nature with a slide of sucha depth and construction that it will insure rigidity to the comb when in open operative position. 2
Other objects and novel features of construction of my improved foldable comb will become apparent as the description proceeds. Referring; to the drawings forming a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the comb withthe slide moved back so that the comb may be folded. g
Figure 2 is a top plan view, partly in section, showing the comb partly opened.
Figure 3 isa' top plan view of the comb in folded position.
Figure 4 is a front view of the same in elevation, and 1 1 Figure 5 is a section taken on line 5,5, Fig. 1.
"Referring now to the drawings in I detail, in which like numerals refer to the same parts throughout the several views, 10 indlcates a comb comprising a section 11 hingedly connectedlto a second section 12 by means of a link 13 inserted into cutouts or openings 14 and '15 in the inner-1y disposed ends of the comb sections 11 and 12.
These sections 11 and 12 are provided with rounded edges 16 and 17, the object of which 1 will shortly be described. ,The comb sections 11 and 12 are further provided with grooves 18 and 19 extending along both their front and rear surfaces and near and par allel to their top edges. member or slide 20 is slidingly mounted on the comb section 11 when the comb is in closed position. The comb may be folded shown in Fig. 3

A lug23 on the section 12 acts as a stopfor the slide 20. It will be understood that in the event thaththe section 12 is folded in the opposite direction to that then the action will be the same asabove, but the section 12 will swing in the opposite direction. Section 12 is h ingedly'connected to link 13 by means of a pin 24 passing through the comb and link. The pivot pins 22 and 24' allow for a relative movement of the sections the 11 and 12 and the link 13 when the comb is prevent any hair frombeing caught be tween the link and the comb sections, as is the case in the foldable combs now in use that are provided with extending or projecting hinges. It will be seen that'the slide 20 isU-shaped in cross section, and that the extensions 25 thereon will act as a shield to cover the hinge 13 on-both sides thereof when the comb is in unfolded open'posigtion. r
' From the foregoing it will be seen that I' have provided a foldablecomb that is operable in either direction for opening and closing and having an internal'or inset: hinge adapted to be covered when the comb is unfolded, the comb being also provided with a slide adapted to act asa comb opener, thus avoiding the necessity of first alining the comb sections when it is desired to open same, and furthermore, the slide member, due to its length and depth Will'rigidly hold the comb sections against play or wabbling when in open or operative position.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A foldable comb comprising a plurality of sections, a cutout'in each of the abutone of the sections adapted to unfold the comb and maintain the sections rigidly in open, flateposition and a portion on the slide adapted to cover the hinge when the slide is fully extended.
3. A comb comprising a plurality of sec- 'tions hingedly connected, and a slidable shield mounted on the top edge of the comb adapted, When the comb isin open or unfolded position, to cover the hinge on both sides thereof, as and for the purpo'sedescribed. 1
CHARLES STRAUSS.
