Thisinvention'r'elates to hair curling and Waving appliances such as are used in processes of permanently Waving: natural hair, and this application'- is a division of my copendin'g application for hair curlers and wavers, filed February 1, 1922, Serial No. 533,360.

Curling and Waving: appliances of the kind: used in the: art to which the present invention relates, usually comprise a sleeve or mandrel retatabl'y mounted upon a relatively fined member that proj ects beyond the root end of thernandrel, such projecting end beingtiedwvith' string or the like to a tress of natural hair close to the scalp,v after which the hair tressis' coiled about the mandrel and secured at the-tip endthereof; the coiled hair tress being subsequently tightened upon the mandrel by turning the mandrel relatively to the fixed member.

The operation of tyingwthe root end of. a curler toa tress of natural hair is diflicult andtedious, the tying having to be effected as near to therootsas possible, While great care and dexterity is required to eficiently tie the hair tress to the curler Without inconvenience or injury to the patient.

Further, when the curler is secured to a hair tress by tying With string or the like, this latter isapt to slip or break under the severe stresses imposed When: the coiled hair tress is tightened upon the sleeve or mandrel, and sooccasions considerable inconvenience to the patient anddelay in the operation of curling and Waving thehair.

The main object of the present invention is to eliminate tying the tress by hand to the root end of the curler.

Another object is to achieve securing the tress to the root end of the curler mechanically by means operable from the tip end of the curler. it further object is to facilitate generally the operation of securing the curler close up to the root end of a hair tress Without risk of injury ormarking the hair.

From the foregoing description it will. be observed that the cross-piece 5 forms the fixed aw, and the hook 10 the movable jaw of. a clamping device controlledand operable from the tip end of the curler by roeating. the sleeve "12, the selective rotation of which determining the selective adjustment of the hook 10 to. the cross-piece 5.

In operation the sleeve 12 is rotated so as to thrust the hook. away from thecross-piece 5 untilthe point 9 of the hook has emerged from the bore 6 in. the cross-piece, thereby opening the clamping loop formed between the part 1.0 and. the. cross=piece The curler is 'tlieninQved over the tress so: as to engage beyond the section 1 and the latter within the loop near the root of the tress, the loop then being closed by reversely rotating the sleeve 12 until in fact the tress is actually clamped to the curler. Thereon curling is effected as described in co-pending patent application No. 533,360.

Alternatively, a screwed flexible member such as a Bowden wire may be substituted for the rigid hook member including the parts 10 and 11 just referred to, one end of the wire being secured to the cross-piece and the other to the screw or nut such as 13 beyond the sleeve 12.

The external thread of the sleeve 12 may be of coarser pitch than its internal thread, and of opposite hand so as to obtain a quick adjustment of the hook to the cross-piece.

Further, it should be noted that the length of the'rod 11 may be less than the mandrel, in which case the sleeve 12 will be lengthened or disposed suitably nearer the root end oi. the axis member, the sleeve could then be turned by a suitable key if not readily ac cessible for'hand turning.

14 is a clamping ring which embraces the tip section 2 which is a split section and is provided with an adjusting screw 15. By tightening the .clamp 14 the split section 2 is locked as firmly as required to the axis member 4 so that the section 2 can be turned in either direction by the application of sufficient torque, the object of which construction is fully described in the aforesaid copending patent application No. 533,360.

I claim 1. In a hair curler and waver including a rotatable mandrel and a relatively fixed member protruding from the root end of the mandrel, the combination with said protruding end of the fixed member of a clamping member, a control disposed at the tip end of the curler, and connecting means between the control and clamping member extending through said mandrel, operation of said control efiecting movement of the clamping member to co-operate with said protruding end whereby the root end of a tress of hair disposed between them is secured to the curler.

2. In a hair curler and waver including a rotatable mandrel and a relatively fixed member protruding from the root end of the mandrel, the combination with said protruding end of the fixed member of a clamping member, a rotatable control disposed in the tip end of the mandrel, and connecting means between the control and clamping member extending through said mandrel, operation of said control effecting drawing of the clamping member on to said fixed member whereby the root end of a tress of hair disposed between them is secured to the curler.

3. In a hair curler and waver including a rotatable mandrel and a relatively fixed axis member, the combination with said member of a clamping device arranged at the root end of the axis member, a control therefor disposed at the tip end of the curler, and connecting means between the control and clamping device "extending through said mandrel.

4. In a hair curler and waver, the combination with a rotatable mandrel and a relatively fixed axis member, of a clamping device of which the fixed jaw is on the root end of the axis member, a control for operating the movable jaw of the device, disposed at the tip end of the curler, and connecting means between the control and said movable jaw extending through said mandrel.

5. In a hair curler and waver including a rotatable mandrel and a relatively fixed axis member, the combination with the axis member of a cross-piece formed thereon at the root end forming the fixed jaw of the clamping device and a movable jaw operable to and from the cross-piece, a rod extending from said movable jaw through the axis member to the tip end or the curler, a threaded sleeve taking over the rod at the tip end and engaging within the axis member at the tip end 01 the mandrel whereby selective rotation of said sleeve controls movement of the movable jaw relatively to the fixed jaw.

6. In a hair curler and waver including a rotatable mandrel and a relatively fixed axis member, the combination with the axis member of a cross-piece bored parallel to the axis of the curler and also coincident therewith, a rigid hook including a shank extending through said axial bore of the cross-piece and through the axis member to the tip end of the curler, the point of the hook being adapted to enter the said bore parallel to the curler axis, and rotatable means at the tip end of the curler to reciprocate said shank so as to open the loop formed between said hook and cross-piece where the point of the hook engages in the respective bore therein or to retract the hook so clamping a tress disposed within the loop therebetween.

7. In a hair curler and waver including a rotatable mandrel and a relatively fixed axis member, the combination with the axis member of a cross-piece bored parallel to the axis of the curler and also coincident therewith, a rigid book including a shank extending through said axial bore of the cross-piece and through the axis member to the tip end of the curler, the point of the hook beingadapted to enter the said bore parallel to the curler axis, and externally threaded sleeve mounted in the tip end of said axis member and also in threaded engagement with the hook shank extending therethrough which the relative positions of hook to cross-piece may be adjusted by selectively rotating said sleeve.
