IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-STAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 16 1, 150, dated March 30, 1875; application filed May 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SIGWALT, J r., of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook, of the State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Hand Stamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a side view of a hand-stamp, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the rear section of the same on a line from O to C. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the rear section of the same on a line from O to 0.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the drawings.
The nature of my invention consists of an improvement in hand-stamps of the percussion class having a vibrating arm or lever; and the object is to prevent lateral motion.
To enable others to manufacture and use my invention, I will further describe it.
My invention is composed of the two opposite lugs A A, or their equivalents, projecting horizontally from the two opposite sides of the base a of the vibrating arm or lever 60, in front of and a little below the fulcrum b of the latter, and of the two opposite projections B B, extending forward from the forward part of the lugs 11 b, projecting perpendicularly from the bed-piece b, and forming the bearings for the vibrating arm or lever, the described lugs A A and projections B B being so constructed and arranged that the lugs A A operate between and against the inner sides of the projections B B.
By the foregoing arrangement a lateral motion of the vibrating arm or lever is entirely prevented.
1 am aware that devices have been used employing lateral bearings, by which to prevent lateral motion of the vibrating arm of hand-stamps; but the devices heretofore used therefor consist of an elongation of the vibrating arm in rear of its fulcrum, and of two opposite lugs projecting from the bedpieces in rear of the lugs bearing the vibrating arm.
It is evident that lateral bearin gs in rear of the fulcrum will not secure to the vibrating arm as fixed a motion as my invention secures thereto, having the lateral bearings in front of the fulcrum, as shown, by its greater compactnesshence less strain to the vibrating arm and its bearings. It also costs less than other similar stamps, as it contains less mate rial in'its construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The lugs A and A of the vibrating arm a, in combination with the extensions B and B of the lugs b and b of the bed-piece, substantially as herein described, as and for the purpose set forth.
