IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD PINCH- BARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,439, dated March 30, 1875; application filed January 18, 1875. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS RAGAN, of Waterloo, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railroad Pinch-Bars, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the pinch-bar as when in use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1, taken on the line :0 :10.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the rail on which the pinch-bar is used. B represents the wheel of a locomotive or car. 0 is a plate, six or eight inches or more in length, which covers the rail, as seen in Fig. 2. D is the base-piece of the pinch-bar, which is connected with the plate 0 by the swivelpin E. This base-piece extends upward, and has two jaws, F F, through which passes the fulcrum-pin G of the lever H. I is a tenon on the under side of the lever, which fills the space between the jaws, and receives the fulcrum-pin, as seen in Fig. 2.
The base of the pinch-bar being swiveled to the plate 0, the lever may be used quartering beneath the wheel, if desired.
As the wheel moves along on the rail, the pinch-bar and plate are pushed after it, being confined to the rail by the bended edges J J of the plate, which inclose the rail.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A railroad-pinch having jaws F F, connected by a pivot, E, with plate 0, as and for the purpose specified.
