IMPROVEMENT IN LOOMS FOR WEAVING HAIR-CLOTH.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,437, dated March 30, 1875; application filed November 8, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrn PARADIS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Looms for Weaving Hair-0loth, of which the following is a correct description:

My invention relates to a device for drawing one hair at a time out from a bunch, and conveying the same across between the sheds of warps and dropping it at the proper place in the shed.

I employ a selector made as a fork or jaw, with a tapering or V-shaped opening, the narrowest part of which is sufficient only to contain one hair, and a pointed hook is swung across this opening and enters between the first and second hairs of the bunch of hair against which the fork is pressed, and said hook clamps the first hair within the jaw, so that when the selector is drawn across the loom between the sheds of warps the hair is drawn from the bunch and can be dropped in the shed at the proper place by moving the hook away from the V and releasing the end of the hair.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional plan, and Fig. 2 is an elevation, of my improved selector, the same being shown in enlarged size.

The selector is made with the jaw a, which is of a V sh ape, converging to a narrow groove, and this groove is of a size to admit of but one hair lying therein, no matter how many hairs there may be in the jaw a. The hook b is pivoted at, c, and passes transversely of the jaws and through an opening therein, and the point of said hook is made sufficiently sharp to pass between two hairs without injuring them. The selector is at the end of a shuttle or of a picking-rod, which is moved across the loom between the sheds of warps by means of a picking-stick or other device in any ordinary manner, and the bunch of hair is to be sustained at right angles to the jaw of the picking-rod or shuttle, and with one end of the bunch placed so that the jaw a can be pressed upon such bunch so that the hair passes into said jaw. As the jaw presses upon the bunch of hair a cam or other device is employed to act upon the tail of the hook I) and move the point of the hook between the hair that is in the groove at the inner end of the jaw a and the hair or hairs next above it, and said first hair is clamped between the inner side of the hook I) and the jaw a, and as the selector and pickin g-rod move backward the hair is drawn from the bunch, and conveyed in between the warps and deposited in the shed at the proper place by a cam acting upon said hook to move the point thereof aside from the V opening and release the end of the hair.

I claim as my invention- The selector formed of a jaw with a hook vibrated laterally to pass between the first hair and the next above it in said jaw, and acting to clamp said hair, substantially as set forth.
