  • This invention relates to improvements in pedal operators for flush valves and its object is to provide an improvement in the same, with the purpose of enabling the person using same to operate the same without touching any part of the mechanism with his hands.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide an improvement in such mechanisms so that the same may be actuated by means of a pedal arranged near the water-closet bowl and which can be actuated by the foot of the person using the same, without trouble or hindrance for the user.

PEDAL OPERATOR FOR FLUSH VALVES.

This invention relates to improvements in pedal operators for flush valves and its object is to provide an improvement in the same, with the purpose of enabling the person using same to operate the same without touching any part of the mechanism with his hands.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improvement in such mechanisms so that the same may be actuated by means of a pedal arranged near the water-closet bowl and which can be actuated by the foot of the person using the same, without trouble or hindrance for the user.
Another object is to provide a casing for the chain of such mechanisms, so as to prevent all possible contact with the same.
The invention is described with reference to the figures of the annexed drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a water-closet,
partially cut away, in which the pedal operating mechanism of the tank is provided with the improvements forming the subject matter of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail view which illustrates, looking from above, the case containing and supporting the improved pedal operating mechanism.
Fig. 4: is a longitudinal vertical section on line H of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail view which illustrates looking from above, said pedal operating mechanism and its supporting plate.
And Fi 6 is a detail which shows in perspective the said pedal operating mechanism.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a water-closet bowl, 2 the tank, 3 the communication tube between the bowl and the tank, 4 the lever pivotally mounted as at 5 on a support 6 fixed to an end wall of the tank, to operate the discharge valve of the tank, which is not shown as same is of the well known type, and 7 is the shooting chain which hangs from the outer end of lever 4.
The improvements which this invention comprise are to enclose this chain 7 within a vertical tube 8 connected to tank 2 by means of two brackets 9 fixed at different heights to the adjacent end wall of tank 2, and the lower end of the protecting tube 1923. Serial No. 654,768.
8 is fitted in a slot with rim 10 formed at the top of a cover 11 which is preferably of:
octagonal shape and provided with a horiprovided with a standard 16 formed with a base plate 17 so as to fix same by means of screws on the ground immediately and at a side of the bowl of the water-closet 1, some what to the back of same. The platform is provided with four openings 18 for ventilation and on the same is fixed by means of screws 19 a supporting plate 20 provided with two pairs of raised lugs 21 and 22 which are somewhat spaced apart. Between the two lugs 22 is pivotally mounted on a horizontal pin 23 a simple lever 24 which at its outer end is connected to the lower end of the chain 7 and at its inner end is articulated at 26 to the fork shaped end of a treadle lever pivotally mounted between the two lugs 21 on a horizontal pin, this lever 25 being longer at the treadle arm which projects out of the cover 11 through an openin 27 formed in the end wall of said cover. The union of the supporting plate 20 and of the platform 15 is reinforced by means of side wings 28 which are connected by means of screws 29 to saidplatform 15.
The operation of this pedal operating mechanism is as follows: By pressing down with the foot the treadle 25, the treadle lever 25 is caused to rotate in one direction and in opposite direction the lever 24 which pulls down the chain 7 within tube 8 and lever 4 is actuated so that the discharge valve of the liquid contained in the tank 2 is raised in. the well known manner. When treadle 25 is let loose, the treadle lever 25 and the simple lever 24 swing in different directions to the previous described one and the chain 7 goes up again owing to the gravity action of the discharge valve of tank 2.
It should be understood that the form of the described mechanism can vary without ing a standard, a base plate thereon having lugs, a covering casing on the standard having an opening in its front end Wall and also having an opening in its top near its rear end a pair of levers pivotally mounted on the lugs, and articulated together, one of said levers extending through said opening in the front Wall of the casing and being provided With a treadle, and an operating chain attached to the rear end of the other lever and extending through said rear opening of the casing cover.
