, This invention relates to improvements in sanitary devices for. water closet bowls one object of the invention being the provision of an electrical air'exhaust device readily attachable to bowls of this type and provlded with means which when the seat is occupied will withdraw the foul air from within the bowl and exhaust the same to the outside air.
/ A further object of this invention is the provision of a motor actuated exhaust fan which is attached to the bowl through the seat hinging elements and in which the air admitting member is positioned within the bowl ad'acent the seat with the exhaust leading to t e atmosphere, there being a. sw tch normally open, whichwhen the seat is occupied is closed to cause the energizatlon of the fan driven electric motor and consequently the exhaust of the foul air during the period of use.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple, inexpensive and durable in construction and thoroughly eiiicient and practical in use, and which is easily installed.

Referring to the drawings,-B designates the water closet bowl, S the seat and C the 5 cover of lid therefor.
The air inlet member or nozzle 9 is provided with the oppositely extended apertured supporting or attaching ugs 8, which fit upon the lid carrying lugs 7 of usual construction, the nozzle being adapted to have its free end as shown inFigure 3 proected within the upper edge of the bowl, so t at when the in place by the clamp 35.

The air directing tubular member 11 is a part of the nozzle and though shown here substantially cylindrical can be made tapering from the far end toward the supporting portion thereof. Thecurvedend 12 is flanged and attached to the air inlet end of the fan chamber or casing 13, while the exhaust 14 through the coupling 15 is attached to a directing pipe 16 to the outside air.
As shown the inlet end 33 of the nozzle 9 curved and covered by the screen 34, held An electric motor 17 depends from the fan casing and its shaft 18 journaled in the lid 19 of the casing 13, operates the rotary fan or blower 20, and said shaft is lubricated by means of the oil directing tube 21.
Inorder that the motor may-be energized when desired, that is when the seat isoccupied, the support 22 is attached to and carried by the tubular member 11, and carries the switch 23, which is a normally open one. The rubber switch engaging member 24 is ad u'stably carried by the screw 25, which is carried in the threaded lug 26, which lug in turn is mounted upon the free end of the switch closing lever 27. This lever 27 is pivoted to the lug10, and in its free end is carried the roller pin 32 which engages the under side of the seat, the spring 28, connected tothe switch operating end of the lever and adjusted through the screw 29 carried by the arm 30 being sufiiciently tensioned as to prevent the switch being closed until the seat is occupied, at which time the button 24 is pressed against the switch 23 and the circuit to the motor closed. The plug 33 and cord 34 form the means to connect the switch and motor in series.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that a sanitary device, which is readily attachable to a water closet bowl is provided and one which will withdraw all of the foul air within the bowl and exhaust the same to. the atmosphere, thus preventing such air from 100 entering the toilet room or bath room, and
providing a much needed sanitary apparatus.
Although in the drawings the present construction is shown as applicable onl on the 5 right hand side of the owl, by ma 'ng the nozzle separate and attachable to the remainder of the apparatus, the device can be made universal, that is so that the motor can be placed upon either right hand or left hand side of the bowl.
It is also desirable in installing to place two strips of rubber upon the underside of the seat to leave an open space at the front of the bowl, thus causing the air drawn in to pass across the bowl and into the. suction nozzle.
What is claimed is y 1. The combination with a water closet bowl, a seat, a hinging element for said seat, a foul air exhausting device secured'in position by said hinging elements and comprising a vnozzle having apertured lugs to enga e the hinging element, a fan casing iaving an exhaust to the atmosphere carried by the nozzle, an electric mtor for operating the fan, a switch supported by the nozzle, said switch being normally open, and in circuit with the motor, a lever also pivoted to the nozzle, an adjustable switch operating member carried by the lever, a spring for holding thesame away from the switch, and means carried by the free end of the lever and in the path to be engaged by the seat when occupied to close the switch 36 through the depressing of the lever at the free end.

In a sanitary device of the character described, the combination with a bowl and its hinged seat, a flat nozzle adapted to fit 40 between the inner edge of the said seat and bowl and having an air directing portion, a pair of horizontal lugs to receive the seat fastenings and also having a single vertical lug at one side, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends to said vertical lug,-a spring con- ,nected to the outer end of said lever for holding its inner end normally in contact with said seat, a casing in communication with the air directing portion of said nozzle, afan in 5a the upper portion of said casing, -a motor in the lower portion of said casing on the shaft of said fan, a switch connected to said air directing portion of said nozzle and with the outer end of said lever and normally held open, and electrical connections with said switch and motor.
