J. F. HEIMAN I PROTECTIVE TOP FOR STOVES Filed August 51, 1926 Inventor Attorney Patented Jan. 11, 1927.
warren. stares enses JOSEPHINE FRANCES HEIMAN, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS- PROTECTIVE TOP r03 srovns.
Application filed August 31, 1926. Serial No. 132,782.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in protective tops for stoves and has for its primary object the provision of a top for gas ranges and the like that will give the full advantage of the heat from the burners. but at the same time protect the conventional grids around the burners and the usual drip pan below the burners from grease or such substance that overflows from the pan during cooking An additional object of the invention resides in the provision of a top of this charactor that is so constructed as to negative the liability of the top from slippage upon the grid which is one of the main disadvantages in types of tops of this character.
Gther objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same comprising the novel form combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawings wherein like numerals in dicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a conventional type of gas range equipped with my protective top constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken substantially upon the line 22 of Figure 1 for more clearly disclosing the association of the protective top with the stove to prevent slippage of the top upon the grid, and
Figure 3 is a perspective of the top per se.
Now having particular reference to the drawings 5 designates generally a gas stove that is equipped with a plurality of gasv burners generally 42 in number designated by the reference character 6. Arranged over these burners is the usual skeleton grid 7, the edges of which rest within a rabbet formed around the top of the burner side of the stove.
My invention constitutes the provision of a sheet metal plate 8 of a configuration substantially similar to the configuration of'the grid 7 upon which the same is to be disposed. said plate being formed with openings 9 similar in shape and number to the shape and number of the burners 6 of the stove 5.
At least two edges of the material forming this plate 8 are bent downwardly to provide flanges 10 for engagement between the adjacent edges of the grid 7 and the rabbet within which the edges of the grid are supported, said rabbet being designated by the reference character 11. Obviously the provision of these flanges will prevent the movement of the protective top upon the grid and therefore maintain the openings 9 of the plate in proper position above the burners 6.
The area of the plate 8 is such that the unflanged edges thereof will extend entirely beyond the adjacent edges of the grid 7 and contact with the back of the stove 5 as well as the oven of the stove to prevent any of the generated heat from escaping around the 7 side edges of the plate.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple, and eflicient form of protective top for stoves that is well adapted for all the purposes heretofore designated, and even though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of a'eertain shape of plate and being flanged at two of its edges. it is nevertheless to be understood that the shape of the plate may be changed at will and a greater or lesser number of the edges of the plate may be flanged as indicated in Figure 2.
Having thus described the invention what I claim is 1. In a protective top for stoves equipped with burners and a grid arranged thereover, a metallic plate of a shape substantially sim ilar to the shape of the grid and having openings therein complementary to the number of the burners of the stove. and means at at least one edge of the plate for disposition between one edge of the grid and the stove top for preventing the sliding of the plate upon the grid.
2. In a protective top for stoves having gas burners and a grid thereover, a plate of a shape substantially similar to the grid and having openings therein corresponding to the number of burners so that the heat may pass engage the stove oven and the back Wall of the stove for preventing the escape of the heat between said edges of the plate and said 10 oven and back Wall of the stove.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signatni'e.
JOSEPHINE FRANCES I-IEIMAN.
