This invention relates to improved garters and method of manufacturing same.

Pursuant to my invention, the garter of the mens type is provided with an ornamentation, particularly tor thepad portion of the garter and of a form to facilitate the positioning of such ornamentation on the pad or other portion of the garter and also to eliminate tolding, handling and other operations required pursuant to prior practices.

As embodied in a preferred form of my invention, the pad is provided with a layer o't material, usually embroidered fabric, which is finished at its edges and ot a contour conforming to any regulation or other approved shape of pad or other portion of the garter and such ornamentation as may be desired.

Finch layerot' material is positioned on the folded lining; of the pad by suitable stitching, such stitching beingotherwise required in the securement of the elastic fabric or other portion of the garter to the pad.

My invention is also applicable to the ornamentation of the pad portion of a mans garter, by the use of fabric as the material and ornamented by emln'oidery or the like to provide a finish for the outer edge of the Fabric and with or without ornamentation within the contour of the material may be desired.

Further features and objects of the invention will be more fully understood from the following detail description and the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing; a mans garter provided with an ornamented covering material for the pad portion, made pursuant to my invention;

The elastic pad is indicated at 10, one end 11 of which is sewed to the pad as described more fully hereinafter. The opposite end 12 of the elastic band is looped through a regulation or other approved adjustable slide 13 and to adjustably carry the loop member 14:, of regulation or other approved construction. The stud member 17 as illustrated is provided with the slot 18 to altord suitable means for securement of the studmember 17 to the pad member, as by means of the overlapping stitchings 19.

The pad member comprises the rearward lining 20 or regulation or other approved form and material, and also an inner strip otstitilening material 20 to give it body.

Pursuant to my invention, the-forward layer 21 is formed ot a suitable material to ii'l'ipllt the desired finish and appearance, the edges of the layer material 21 being linished by stitchings 22, see Fig. 1, as by embroidering or the like. Preferably, the inner portion oi" the finish material 21 may be ornamented as is indicated at 23 or by any other desired or suitable form of orna mentation. I

, The pad member is provided with suitable means for connection with a sock. stocking or the like, which may be of the form as illustrated inthe drawings, such as the clasp member 2a, which coopr-n'ates with the stud 25 ot the stud member 26, carried by the webbing 27 or equivalent.

In the form of the garter shown in Fig. 1, I may provide the extension 25, preferably of the material of the elastic band 10, whether elastic or not. or of other appropriate coloring or marking. I

In the manufacture of mens garters and the like, the end 11 ot the elastic band '10 is positioned between the finish material 21 and the rearward lining 20, to locate such end 11 within the line of stitching or stitchings 29, whereby the end 11 of the elastic band 10 is sewed to the rearward lining material 20. The line or lines of stitchings 29 are continued, say in the upper direction as viewed in Fig. 1, and then across the finish material 21 as indicated at 30, thence downwardly as is indicated at 31, whereby the inner end of the extension 28 is jointly sewed to the rearward lining material 20 and the finish material 21, thence downwardly to the lowerly line of stitching to jointly sew the finish material 21 and the inner end of the Webbing 27 to the rearward lining material 20, and also the inner end of the webbing 33 of the clasp member 24-.

If desired, a second and outer line of stitching 3% is applied to secure the inner end oi the webbing 33 of the clasp member 24 jointly to the finish material 21 and the rearward lining material 20, which outer stitching 34 may be continued about the contour of the finish material 21, to provide for a superior style of finish tor the more costly types of garters.

The finish material 21 is preferably of en:- broidercd type and may be formed on an embroidering machine as a series of such embroidered finished portions 21, 21 or the like, formed in the usual manner ot embroidering a set of ornamentations upon a fabric base 35, usually in the form of an open mesh strip, to which the embroidered stitehings and ornamentations desired design or designs are formed. The above results are obtained in one operation of the embroidering machine. The individual embroidered finished portions are separated from one another and from the base strip 35 by cutting or burning, or like procedure, well understood in the embroidery art. The individual ornamentations such as 21 21*, etc., are then. applied to, the individual garters as above described.

Pursuant to my invention, the heretotore necessary operations of folding the upper satin, or other cloth of thepad to attain a finished. edge and to prevent fraying, are eliminated.

Thus, my invention saves the time heretot'ore necessary in handling and folding the upper satin or other finishing cloth and the carrying of these parts to and from the folding machine.

l urthermore, my invention afiords a most convenient and low-cost method of manufacture in the making of garters bearing an embroidered r other ornamentation, in that the embroidering or other ornamental operations are performed on the outer finish material oi the pad previous to assemblingthe same with the remaining parts of the pad member, as contrasted withthe procedure of embroidcring or otherwise applying ornamentation to. the outer finish material after the assembly of the parts of the pad member.

In Fig. 5, the stud member 40 is secured in a suitable manner to the extension 28 of the pad member, in lieu of securing the stud member 17 to the finish material 21, as shown in Fig.1, In the arrangement shown 5, the ornamentation ot the finish 21 is exposed to the view of the ob server wholly tree from any other part of the garter.

The method of making a pad and appurtenant parts of garters or the like which con' prises embroidering the outer material of the pad to have a contour conforming to the contour of the resulting pad and to have the contour'portions of the outer material finished and simultaneously embroidering the front taco thereof, assembling such finished outer material with the stifiening material ot the pad and the appurtenant parts out the garter, and sewing the same to one another.

2. A pad and appurtenant parts of a garter or the like, comprising an outer materialhaving its front taco embroidered and a cont-our conforming to the contour of the pad and having its contour portions finished by embroidering, the stitches of such em-. broidering extending solely through the outer material, a layer of stiti'ening material, and stitchings securing said outer finished material and said stiii'ening material to the appurtenant parts of the garter.
