Description
F. HARGET PROCESS OF TREATING MARBLE Filed July 16. 1926 Patented Jan. 4, 1927.
PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK HARGET, OF TOLEDO, OI-II O.
PROCESS OF TREATING MARBLE.
Application filed July 16, 1926. Serial No. 122,793.
My invention relates to a process of treat ing marble or other similar substances, and an object of this invention is to produce an ornamental surface simulating brick in appearance.
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, in which:
The figure is a plan view of a marble slab showing one manner in which the appearance may be transformed into a simulated brick structure.
In accordance with my invention, I take a slab of marble A of the desired dimensions and polish this slab in such a manner as to obtain a glossy lustrous surface. erably the slab is of reddish color so as more closely to approach the general appearance of brick. After the slab has been polished to a suitable degree of glossiness, and with the side of a straight edge ruler B, l abrade the surface with a piece of carborundum C along crossing rectangular lines 1) of approximately the conformation of brick blocks. By so doing, white lines are left on the polished surface of the marble, and in operation no perceptible grooves appear on the surface of the marble, but merely sullicient abrading to destroy the polish at those places.
Yvhile I have shown and described a method of treating marble by hand, I do not desire to be limited solely to the use of manual means for effecting the result, because a simple machine may readily accomplish the purpose, especially when this method is to be carried out on a production basis.
It is well known that patterns of different designs have been formed inthe face of a polished marble slab by means of chiseling,
Prefbut this is decidedly impracticable for the purpose, because of the difliculty in drawing straight lines and because a metallic tool chips or breaks away particles of the marble, thereby materially detracting from the de- 45 sired neat appearance.
Marble treated in the manner heretofore described is admirably adapted for interior decorating, as for. example in the case of fire place construction where the rough and unfinished appearance of brick is not desired, although the general effect of brick blocks is suitable. Numerous uses and advantages of this construction will be readily apparent to those skilled in this art. 65
While I have shown and described a construction which admirably fulfills the object heretofore specified, itis to be understood that the above is given by Way of illustration and not of limitation, and numerous changes in details of construction and choice of materials may be effected without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
- What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letter Patent is: i
l. The process of treating marble which consists in polishing the surface of the marble, and thereafter abrading the polished surface along crossing rectangular lines to simulate brick in appearance.
2. The process of treating marble which consists in polishing the surface of the marble, and thereafter abrading the polished surface by a piece of carborundum, along 7 crossing rectangular lines to simulate brick in appearance. 7
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
FREDERICK HARGET.
