Description

1 I J. H. 'AHLGREN v MAS SAGE APPARATUS Filed May 13. 1925 n-58m an.
Patented Jan. 4, 1927.
iJhilTED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
MASSAGE APPARATUS.
Application filed May 13, 1925. Serial No. 29,977.
This invention relates t paratus, and
massaging apis more particularly directed to an apparatus for use in massaging the skin and flesh of the body to reduce the flesh from the body and give to the skin a more healthy and pleasing appearance,
Many types of massaging apparatus have been developed and are no apparatuses are for the most or vacuum type employing in use. These part of the cup a rotary motion for the reduction of the flesh and treatment of the skin. There are also apparatus employing a mering stroke. 1 have short, rapid,
many massaging pounding or hamdiscovered that a oscillatory stroke 18 extremely efficient for such use, and that the same will,
in most cases more rapidly reduce flesh from the body and is more benencial in the treatment of the skin of the body. I have also discovered that, according treated, the rapidity and oscillation or oscillatory be regulated. Some indivi to the individual severeness of the treatment should duals under some An object of my inventio apparatus for imparting a raplo,
latory stroke to massaging n is to provide an 1 short oscilmembers that are adapted to be engaged with the body.
Another object of my invention is to provide an apparatus in whi 21l]llStll)lQ- oscillatory parted ch a variable or stroke may be imto massaging members. Another ob]ect of my invention is vide a complete, compact apparatus so con structed and assembled that the same occupies a minimum of space and which may be contained within a small space so that the same will provide oscillatory apparatus which may be transported with ease.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the followdetailed description of a preferred em bodiment thereof as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. In the drawings:
1 is a side elevation of a massaging apparatus embodying this invention, illustrating the cover provided therefor in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a front elevatio cover in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a reduced fron n illustrating the t elevation thereto proof, illustrating the cover attached to the apparatus. I
Fig. 4: is a top plan view thereof.
In the preferredembodiment of this in vention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 1 illustrates a base plate preferably of circular contour and to which plate a pair of standards 2 are secured by any suitable means, such the screws 3. Secured to the upper end of the supports 2 is a cradle 4 to which cradle a motor 5 is secured the motor 5 being preferably an electric motor of the alternating current type of such voltage and current requirement that the same may be connected to the ordinary 110 volt light circuitin a manner well understood through cable 6 and socket (not shown). The shaft 7 of the motorv has a pinion 8. which pinion 8 meshes with a gear 9 mounted upon the drive shaft 10, the shaft 10 being rotatably supported in the members 11, which members 11 are secured to the standard 1.
The shaft 10 has a cam or eccentric sur face 12 secured thereto Or formed integral therewith. An eccentric yoke 13 completely surrounds the cam surface 12 and is connected to a rod 14, terior bore 15 formed therethrough into which bore'15 a pin- 16 is screw threaded. The pin 16 oscillates through the enlarged bore 37 formed in the base plate 1. Secured to the pin 16 is a collar 17 which collar ongages one end of a helical spring 18. The spring 18 is engaged at its opposite end by an annular flange 19 on the eccentric yoke 13. The spring 18 is compressed in position so that the same yieldably urges the pin 16 outward from the bore 15. The spring 18 is employed to lock the pin 16 in the proper adjusted position and prevents the same from turning to unscrew from the bore 15. The pin 16 is screw-threaded into a traveling block 20 which traveling block is guided in position between the posts 21, the block 20 being recessed at its end to approsiimite the curvature of the posts 21, which posts 21 are secured to the standard 1 as illustrated at 22. Links 23 are pivot-ally secured to the traveling block 20 as illustrated at 24 and are pivotally secured at their opposite ends to arms 25 as illustrated at 26, which arms 25 are pivotally mounted within forks 27, which forks 27 are secured to the standard 1 as illustrated at 28.
The pin 16 it Will be seen is threaded at "face of the members 29.
ployedat theend' that is threaded into the bore and right hand threads 16 being employed at the end that is screw threaded into the traveling block although it isto be understood that the adjustment obtained by this right and left hand threading might equally well be obtained by the use of threads of different pitch.
Theopposi-te ends of the-arms are provided with oscillatory members 29, which oscillatory members are preferably of cylindrical form, or rather present a curvedmassaging surface 30. The members 29 are removably secured to the arms 25 in any suitable manner, such as illustrated by the screws 31, which are countersunk in the sur The pin 16 is provided with a head 32 to permit easy manipulation thereof. The cover 83 is provided for covering the motor 5 and gears-8 and '9, and is of the same contour as the standard 1 and is preferably secured to its periphery by means of screws 34.
The cover 33 is provided With ornamental handles by means of which the apparatus is manipulated. The upper portion of the cover is perforated as illustr-atedat 36 to permit the airto reach the motor 5 and'to permit the exhaust from within the cover 33 of any gases formedby the motor 12.
The operation of my massaging apparatus is as follows:
The plug on the end of the cable 6 is inserted in any suitable electric light socket and the motor 5 thus set in operation. The shaft 110 is thereby driven through the gears each end, left hand threads 16 being em- -8 and 9 and therotation of the shaft 10 opcrates-through the cam surface 12 an eccentric yoke 13 to reciprocate the pin 16, which pin 16 is rapidly reciprocated-in a vertical direction. The reciprocationof the pin 16 is translated through the links 23 and arms 25 to the massaging members 30 which are rapidly reciprocated through a short stroke, which stroke is determined by the cam sur face 12 and the position to which traveling block 20 is regulated by meansof the pin 16.
Having fully described a preferred embodiment of this invention, it will be obvious that the same may be varied in detail without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
