SHUTTLE OPENER.

My present invention relates to rotary `hook sewing machines, and the general ob- Ject of the invention is to provide improved mechanism for opening the shuttle i. e. for
a point as to minimize the force required,`
and to minimize the required movement of the shuttle and the shuttle opening mechanism.
The various features of novelty which characterize my invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification; for a better understanding` of the invention `however, its advantages and specific objects attained with its use, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention.

In drawings, A represents a sewing machine head, and A the base or bed thereof. rlhe main shaft B of the sewing machine is journalled in the upper portion of the head A, and through a belt C drives the hook shaft D, which is located below the head., At the front end of the sewing machine the hook shaft D carries the ring shaped hook element E, which is provided with a hook E proper, and with an internal bearing E2 for the shuttle F. The latter is formed with a bearing rim F receive-d in the hook ring bearing E2, and is provided with a radial extension or arm F2 which projects beyond the periphery of the hook ring, and is formed with shoulders F3 and F4 between which ext-ends the fixed arm or stop A2, carried by the sewing machine bed and serving to prevent the shuttle F from rotating with the hook E. Sufficient clearance is provided to permit the passage of the thread between the stop A2 and the projection F2 in each loop kforming operation. In so far as above described the sewing machine mechanism is of a type well known and commonly employed in high speed power driven sewing machines, though the mechanism actually illustrated is adapted to receive a thread holding bobbin in its shuttle several times larger than is eniployed in high speed sewing machines now in use.
In operation the frictional drag of the rotary hook E on the shuttle F tends to hold the shoulder F4 against the stop A2. In accordance with the present invention, the shoulder F4 is moved away from the stop A2 at the proper time in each loop forming operation, by means of a shuttle opening arm G carried by a rock shaft Gr journalled under the bed A', and oscillated by means of a connecting rod H which is connected at one end to the rock shaft arm G2 and at the other end is attached to an eccentric strap H surrounding an eccentric carried by the main shaft B. The shuttle opening arm G is shaped and disposed to engage the shuttle arm F2 in front of the shoulder F2, and thereby apply a shuttle opening force to the shuttle which is substantially in line with the direction of movement of separation between the stop arms A2 and the shoulder F4 thereby produced. Advantageously the rock Ashaft G -is separated from the hool'.' shaft D by a distanceiless than the radius of the hook ring. In consequence the rock shaft Gr lies back of the hook ring, and the arm G is shaped to extend up alongside and then over the hook ring, terminating in a portion engaging the shuttle arm F2, and extending away from the latter in a direction generally tangential to the hook ring.
The shuttle F lits loosely in the ring bearing D2, and when the shuttle opening force is applied at the point and in the direction described, the shuttle tends to rock or roll along the lower portion of the bearing E2 on which the weight of the shuttle is can ried, as the shoulder F4 moves away from the stop A2. ln consequence of its described character, the extent of the movement of the shuttle and the shuttle opening mechanism, required to eil'ect a given separation between the stop A2 and the shoulder F4, is less than with the arrangements heretofore employed in which the shuttle opener has engaged the shuttle at some point around the periphery ot the latter at some distance Jtrom the stop engaging portion thereof, and has exerted its shuttle opening force in a direction at an angle to the direction ot the desired movement ot separation between the stop and stop engaging portion ot the shuttle. As compared with shuttle opening` arrangements heretobeitore used, the present invention is also characterized by the avoidance of chatter and by the tact that the shuttle opening movement is opposed but little, it' any, by the action oi gravity. rlhe invention is especially adapted for use in a high speed sewing machine in which the shuttle is relatively large.
In the machine shown, as is usual in high speed rotary hoolr machines, the hoolr makes two revolutions for each loop forming operation2 and the shuttle opening rock shait G thereiore maires one complete oscillation tor each two revolutions ot the hook shaitt D.
lt will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes may be made in the torni of the apparatus disclosed without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. ln a rotary hoolr sewing machine comprising a shuttle stop. a hooi: member revolving about a horizontal axis, and. a shuttle mounted therein and having a portion engaging said stop to thereby prevent said shuttle trom rotating with. the hook memberT the improvement which consists in a shuttle opening i'nechanism intermittently engaging the shuttle substantially in line with the resultant movement ot separation between said stop and the shuttle portion engaging it.
2. In a rotary hook sewing machine comprising a shuttle stop, a hook member revolving about a horizontal axis, and a shuttle mounted therein and having an upper portion normally engaging said stop to thereby prevent said shuttle from rotating with the hoolr member, the improvement which consists in a shuttle opening mechanism intermittently engaging the shuttle and applying a Jtorce thereto at a point substantially in line with, and parallel in direction to the resultant movement ot separation between said stop and the portion of the shuttle normally engaging the latter.
3. ln a rotary hoolr sewing machine comprising a shuttle stop, a liool; member revolving about a horizontal anis, and a shuttle mounted therein and formed with two spaced apart upwardly extending shoulder parts, one in iront and the other in the rear ot said stop7 having reference to the direction ot rotation oii said hook member, between which said stop is loosely received to thereby restrict angular movement off the shuttle, the improved shuttle opening mechanifm comprising a rock shaft oscillating about an anis parallel to the anis .t the hool; member and provided with an arm engaging the iront shoulder part and moving the latter toward the stop as said shaft oscillated.
