HERMANN ARTHURKLEMM, O'F HARRISON, NEW YORK; ASSIGNOR T0 UNION SPECIAL \MACI-IINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,- A. CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
SEWING MACHINE.
Application filed June 10, 1921. Serial No. 476,395.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN ARTHUR KLEMM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrison, in the county of \Vestchester and State of New York, haveinvented an Improvement in Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to a sewing machine and moreparticularly to the feed mechanism of an overseam sewing, ma-
relates particularly to the construction of the feed devices. Iam aware that heretofore in sewing machines of this type feed cups have been employed and it has been customaryto actuate one of these feedcups positively todrive the other feed cup therefrom either through the fabric which is being operated-upon or from the-mechanism for positively actuating the positively driven feed cup. The object of "my present invention is to provide afeed mechanism of this general type in which both feed cups are positively driven andone feed cup at least is constructed to contain the mechanism for positively imparting thereto an intermittent revoluble movement so that the feed cups are both positively and independently driven in order-to operate in the sewing operation in' a differential manner. Furthermore, the mechanism employed for driving the feed cups consists entirely of an eccentric, shafts, and series of levers which are adjustable to vary the extent of the feed'of both feed cups simultaneously or independently of each other, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is aside elevation of'a sewing machine embodying the mechanism comprising my present invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view.
Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation illustrating more or less diagrammatically the mechanism for operating the sewing machine needle.
Fig. 5 is also a sectional elevation illustrating the mechanism for operating the looper, and i I Fig. 6 is a section through one of the feed cups showingthe mechanism by which the same is driven.
Referring to the drawing, the machine as illustrated as embodying my present invention comprises a base 10 and a frame 11 mounted thereon, together with a power or drive shaft 12-journaled' in suitable bearings 13, 14 connected to'the frame in any desired manner. The drive shaft 12 is fitted'with fly wheels 15 with which there are associatedbelt pulleys 16 in the customaryfmanner for turning the drive shaft.
The forwardportion of the base and frame is provided with an extension 17 extending through which is a shaft 18 journaled in bearings 19 connected'to or I forming part ofthefront frame extension 17. On'the shaft 18"there is a collar 20 which carries an arm 21 extending up wardly and provided with a curved portion 22 terminating-in a head 23 so as'to form an overhanging arm in which in the head 23 there is 'journaled a spindle 2lfor supporting afeed cup 25. Mounted on the shaft 18 within the forwardextension of the base and frame there are collars 26 to which there is connected a yoke 27. Extending from this yoke 27 is an arm 2.8 for maintaining the yoke, together with the shaft 18 and the collar 20 with the arm 21, in a-predetermined position relatively -to the frame, this being accomplished by the use of a spring- 29, one end of which is connected to the arm 28 and the other end is suitably connected in the frame of the machine, it being understood that by suitable set' screws or-otherwise the collars 26 are fixed to the-shaft 18 as is also the collar 20. By this construction the arm is yieldingly maintained in a normal position, bearing against a stop plate 30 suitably attached to the face of the machine.
I'also employ a spindle 31 mounted in a suitable bearing in the forward extension of the base ofthe machine passing through connected, while the opposite" end of the link the machine.
the yoke 27 and also through a sleeve 32 for supporting and carrying the second feed cup 33. This spindle- 31 and the feed cup are positively driven by a mechanism which will be hereinafter described.
In the machine there is also a vertical rocker shaft 34 which is journaled in bearings 35 and 36 which are carried by brackets 37 and 38 or otherwise and suitably secured in their proper positions in the frame of On the drive shaft there is an eccentric 39 fitted with a strap 40 and an eccentric rod 11 which extends through an opening provided therefor in the front portion of the frame of the machine. At the forward end of the rod 411 and exterior-1y of the machine frame, the same is provided with bearings 42, adapted to receive the round head 43 of a pin 14, the opposite end ofwhich may be adjustably secured in a slot 45 provided for this purpose in an arm 16 which extends from a collar 417 secured on the rocker shaft 34 by a set screw &8 or otherwise.
Adjacent the upper end of the rocker shaft 341 there is a collar 49 carrying an arm 50 in which there is a slot 51. The collar 49 'issecured in, position onthe rocker shaft 34 by means of set screws 52 or otherwise. Adjustable in the slot 51 of the arm 50 there is a pin 53. This, as will be understood, may be secured in any desired position in the slot and is provided with a round head 541 which is journaled in bearings 55 connected at one end of a bracket 56. In the bracket 56 one end of a link 57 is adjustablv 571s similarly connected in a bracket 58 which is also provided with bearings indicated at 59. .In the bearing 59 there is journaled a round head 60of a pin 61, the opposite end of the pin 61 bein i suitably connected in an arm 62 carried by a horizontally disposed rocker shaft 63. The rocker shaft 63 is journaled in bearings 64; and 65 which are integral with or suitably connected to the upper or round portion of the arm 21. At the end of the rocker shaft opposite that carrying the arm. 62 there is a collar 66 extending from which is an arm 67 having a round head 68 at its extremity. This rounded head 68 is journaled in bearings 69 connected to a bracket 70. A link 71 is 'adjustably connected to the bracket and also to a bracket 72. The
bracket 72 like the bracket 7 0 is fitted with bearings 73 in which the round head 74; of a pin 75 is journaled. The opposite end of the pin 75 is fixed in the arm 76 of a crank lever that is pivotally mounted at H in a bracket 78 carried by the arm 21, the other arm of the bell crank lever being indicated at 79. One end of a pin is connected to the arm 79 of the bell crank lever and ournaled on this pin 80 is a bearing 81..
carrying a bracket 82. This bracket 82 is adjustably connected by a link 83 to a bracket 84% carrying bearings 85 in which there is jo-urnaled a round head 86 at the extremity of an arm 87 by which the feed cup 25 is actuated.
Referring particularly to Fig. 6, it will be seen that the feed cup 25 includes a drum or cylindrical shell 88 within which there is an oscillating member 89 mounted on the spindle 2 1- by a hub 90. ()n the oscillating member 89 there are lugs 91 and 92 and the hub is provided with a lug 93 intermediate of the lugs 91 and 92. The outer faces of the lugs 91,92 and 93 are eccentric to the inner surface of the drum 88 so as to provide wedge-shaped recesses 9t, 95 and 96 respectively between the faces of these lugs and the inner surface of the drum 88. Within these recesses I employ balls indicated respectively at 97, 98 and '99, and associated with each ball and lying within the same recess is a spring 100 which at one end bears against the corresponding ball and at the other end is maintained within the recess by a plate 101 or otherwise, the plates 101 being suitably secured in position to the lugs with which theyare associated in order to maintain. the balls in contact with the inner surface of the drunr'and the faces of the lugs. Also, as is indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the feed cup may be provided with a rib at its upper surface, having a knurled face 102 to engage with the material .to be sewn in the use of the machine. The arm 87is suitably connected to the oscillating member 89 and by this means, as will be understood, as the arm 87 is oscillated by the bell crank lever through its connection therewith, as hereinbefore described, the balls 97, 98 and 99 in the forward movement will wedge against the faces of the lugs and the inner surface of-the drum and revolve the drum a predetermined portion of a revolution, and in the return movement the drum will remain stationary and the balls permitted to slide along the surfaces of the lugs and the inner surface of the drum.
Adjacent the lower end of the rocker shaft 3 1 there is fixed a collar 103. Extending from the collar 103 is an arm 1041 in which there is a slot 105 adapted to receive one end of a pin 106 at the opposite end of which there is a round head 107 journaled in bearings 108. The bearings 108 are carried by a bracket 109 in which oneend of a link or rod 110 is adjustably connected, the opposite end of the link 110 being similarly connected in a bracket 111 carrying bearings 112 inwhich is journaled the round head 113 of an arm 11 1 which operates an oscillating member to actuate the spindle 31 and the feed cup 33 by the sametype of mechanism and in the same manner as the feed cup 25 is'actuated, as hereinbefore described, except, as will lee-understood, the feed cup 33 is driven inthe' opposite direction-tliat is to say, assuming the feed cup 25 is driven in a counter clockwisedirectionas viewed-in Fig. 2, the feed cup 33 is driven ina clockwise direction.
As hereinbefore stated, the present invention relates particularly to the devices for'operating thefeed cups, and. the mechanism for operating-the needle, as well as operating the looper form no particular part of the present invention, and, for example, may be the same or similar to the same-devices as shown and described in Letters Patent No. 571,125, granted to me November 10, 1396. As illustrated in Fig. 4, for example, the needle operating devices may consist of a cam- 115 fixed on the drive shaft and adapted tooperate within a yoke 116 in order to reciprocate the same and the head thereof 11'? which is connected to the needle shaft 118 by a set'screw 119 or otherwise. The needle shaft,- as illustrated in this figure,- is provided with aneedle holder 120 in which there is secured aneedle 121. These devices, however, form no part of my pres ent invention and are merely illustrative of amanner-in-which theneedle'may be driven.
Also, for example, the looper mechanism may include a looper member 122 carried at the end of :alooper bar 123' to which members there is imparted a reciprocating movement, a lateral movement, and also a swinging movement in order to cause the looper to perform its functions. As illustrated these various movements may beimparted to the looper bar by an arm 124 which is connected at one end to a shaft 125 and a cam 126 fixed on the'drive shaft and operating within a strapor-yoke127 in the arm 124 to impart a reciprocatin-g movement to the slide bar 128 on which is mounted a carriage 129, thelooperarm 123 being pivot-ally connected to the carriage 129;- The lateral movement of thecarriage 129 is effected by means ofan arm 130 operated by an eccentric 131 on thedrive shaft. 1 A bell crank lever 132 is pivotallyconnected to the arm 124 adjacent the free end thereof, and at the ex tremity of one arm of the bell crank lever 132 there is a rounded head 133 through which, by means of suitable bearings, the same is pivotally connected to the end of the arm- 130. The opposite end of the other arm of the bell crank lever 132 is connected by a link to the carriage 129. The swinging movement of' the looper bar is effected through an arm 134- carried by a strap actuated by an eccentric 135 through the toggle members 136, one. of'which is connected to an'arm-137 and the other to an arm 138, the former being an-extension of the carriage and the latter connected to the arbor on which the-looperarm is mounted, the
pivotal connection between the toggle 136 and the arm 138 being indicated at 139, and the pivotal connection between the other toggle 136 and the bracket 137 being inclicated at 140. As hereinbefo-re stated, however, this particular form of looper mecha nism is substantially the-same as that disclosed in the patent to which 1 have hereinbefore referred.
Referring again to the feeder mechanism it will now be understood that the oscillating member 89 is actuated from the bell crank lever 7 9 through the link 83 and the bell crank lever is operated from the rocker shaft 63 through the arm 67 and the link 71, while the rocker shaft 63'is operated through he arm 62 and the link 57 by the arm 50 and the vertical rocker shaft 34 which in turn is given a rocker movement from the drive shaft through the eccentric 39, eccentric rod 41 and the arm 46 connected to the eccentric rod 41 by thepin 44. Also it will. be equally apparent that the rocker arm 114 and the oscillating member actuated thereby to drive the feed cup 33 are operated through the link 110 by the arm 104 from the rocker shaft 34. The position of the pin 44 may besh'ifted in the slot: in the arm 46 to simultaneously adjust the extent of the rockermovement impartedto the rocker shaft 34 and therebysimultaneously adjust the extent of the feed movement imparted to the feed cups, or the position ofthe link 57 may be adjusted relatively to the brackets 56 and 58 and the position of the pin 53 adjusted to place in the slot 51 in the arm to separately adjust and determine the extent of the step by step movement imparted to the feed cup 25 when the rocker shaft 34has a predeterminedmovement imparted thereto. In a similar manner the link 110 may be adjusted to position in the brackets 109 and 111, and-also the pin 106 adjusted to position in the slot 105 in the arm 104 to separately vary and adjust the extent of the step by step revoluble movement-impart ed to the feed cup 33 when a predetermined rocker movement'is imparted to the rocker shaft 34-. Furthermore, that by this construction, will'now be apparent, the feed cups are both positively driven and the mechanism for driving and the frictional devices by which the outer feed cup is driven are self-contained therein and the feed-cups may operate differentially irrespective of the thickness of the material which is being operated upon by the machine.
