Description

Jan. 29, 1935. E, HORN 1,989,596
PINKING ATTACHMENT Filed yApril 12, 1933 ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 279, 1935 UNITED STATES 'PATENT ortica 1` Claim.
for sewing machines.
One of the objects of the invention is the proh vision of means whereby the pinking operation is accomplished simultaneously with the seaming operation.
The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms part of the application, with the understanding, however, that the improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to the precise construction` described and, therefore, such changes and modiflcations may be made therein as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view, partly in section, of the improved pinking attachment of my invention, the same being shown associated with a rock shaft which forms part of the regular sewing machine equipment.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the mechanism shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken approximately on the broken line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a ratchet employedin the mechanism shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive.
Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, the numeral 5 indicates a feed shaft associated with the seaming mechanism of -a sewing machine and forming part of the usual equipment. Said feed shaft has a rocking motion about its axis'. An arm 6 is secured to the shaft 5 by meansof a clamp '7. Said arm 6 is adjustably and pivotally connected to a rocker arm 8 so that the speed of the pinking mechanism to be described may be varied. The rocker arm 8 passes thru a plate 9 and is curvedly offset at its upper portion, its upper end beingr pivotally connected at 10 to a member 11 which is shown in detail in Fig. 4 and which bears against and functions to move forwardly in steps a roller 12 mounted in a block 9a which is secured to the plate 9. The roller 12 is secured by means of screws 13a to a pinking roller 13. The rocking motion of the feed shaft 5 about its axis gives an up and down This invention relates to pinking attachments :movement to the arm 8 and consequently to the member 11, whereby the rollers 12 and 13 are moved forward on the upwardstrokes of the rocker arm.
The rollers 12 and 13 are rotated forwardly against the action of a coil spring 15 which is secured to the block 9a at the point 16 and to the member 11. An end of the coil spring is secured to the member 11 by lying in a groove 11a and being bent over the inner end of said groove. The 10 member 11 is provided with a recess 11b in which lies a portion of the periphery of the roller 12 which, as shown in Fig. 1, is recessed. A member 18, best shown in Fig. 2, and placed in an inclined position, functions to prevent backward motion l5 'of the rollers 12 and 13 and is pressed against the former roller by means of a spring 19 and is backstopped by bracket 20 secured to the block 9a. A roller 21 is positioned in a slot 22 in the plate 9 and extends above and below said slot, as clearly 20 shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and is pressed upwardly against the pinking roller 13 by means of a spring 23, the ends of which are secured to the lower face of the plate 9 by screws 24, as shown in Fig. 2. The tension'of the spring 23 may be adjusted'by 25 means of the screws 24 so that the pressure of the roller 21 against the pinking roller may be varied. The cloth which is to be simultaneously seamed and pinked passes between the roller 21 and the pinking roller 13 and lies on the plate 9 which is 30 provided with a slot 25, thru which the sewing needle works. As previously stated, the feed shaft 5 is connected with the sewing mechanism so that the pinking' and sewing operations are simultaneously performed.
What is claimed as new is:
The combination with a rocker feed shaft, of a pinking roller and means connected with said feed shaft for intermittently moving said pinking roller, said means being a rocker arm which in- 40 cludes a part'rigidly secured to said shaft and extending laterally therefrom and an upright part pivotally connected to the lateral part, said roller being provided with an annular fiange extending from one side thereof, a dog pivotally connected to the upper end of the rocker arm and having a. recess receiving said flange, and a spring exerting' pressure downwardly on said dog.
