SHEARS.

This invention relates to shears, more particularly of the type used for-trimming the edges of grass plots, lawns or the like, although not limited thereto.
Among theaims and objects-of the invention is the provision-0t a device or the character mentioned, with a view to compact ness, in which the number of parts are few and' so constructed that the entire device may be, knocked down so asto occupy the minimum space, to facilitate sharpening the blades, and for transportation, storage, or the'like, wherein the cost of production is small'but efliciently and operation high.
Theimprovements-in details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of'the accompanying drawings in connection with the description hereinafter contained, wherein a preferred embodiment of the-invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting an understanding or" the same.
In the drawings, whereinlike numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures;
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved shears;
Figure 2 is an elevation of the lower portion thereof;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view of the rear end of the blades and adjacent parts;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary portion of one of the blades and some of the adjacent parts; and
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view thereof, taken generally upon lines 55 of Figure 4.
The numerals 10-10 designate the coinpanion shear blades, having cutting edges 11 thereon, which are separably and pivotally secured together near their rear ends by the stud 12, which passes through both of the blades and near the upper end is surrounded by a washer 13 and a lock washer 14, having a radial slot 15, which passes over a reduced portion of the shank of the stud.
The blades may be readily separated by removing the lock washer 14 and restored to their operative position by replacing this washer. These blades may be separated for sharpening, although this is not essential.
Fixed in each of the blades is a stud 16, having a shank portion 17, ahead 18, and an intermediate shank portion 19 of less cross new and rectangular area than the head and. shank portion 17.
In the embodiment of this invention Iprovide two handle levers 20, each being; provided with a handle 21 at. its-outer end and both are pivotally connected with each other by apintle 22.. The lower ends. of these levers are bent at. an angle toform thetoot portions 23,. through each of which is an opening of substantially. the same diameter as the shank 17 of the stud 16 through which said shank is projected when the parts: are assembled.
The blades and handle levers are" locked against disengagement in their operative positions and means are provided for automatically'moving-the blades upon their pivot mounting by a bow spring 24;,the ends of which are shaped to provide the foot portions 25. In the outer edge of these foot )ortions is a slot 26 of substantially; the same width as the shank portion 19 oft the stud'16, both of which receive these foot portions when the shear is assembled.
For the purpose of storage, shipment and the like, it is desirable that the shear be taken down, that is, the blades, lever and spring be separated from each other. This is accomplished by moving the outer ends of the bow spring 24: toward each other, thus disengaging the foot portions 25 from the studs 16 and then lifting the ends of the handle levers 20 from said studs 16. When thus separated there are three pieces, each of which is substantially flat and can be closely nested together in a suitable carton.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a shear; a pair of blades; a stud fixed in each of the blades; a pair of handles pivotally connected with each other and each handle being connected with. one of the blades in part by said stud; and a spring detachably connected at each end to one of said studs.
2. In a shear; a pair of blades; a pair of handle levers; a member between each of the blades and the lower end of one of the handle levers forming a pivotal connection; and a spring, the opposite ends of which are detaehably secured to the member between the blade and handle lever.
3. In a shear; a pair of blades; a pair of handle levers, the lower end of each of which terminates in a foot portion; a spring; and means for separably securing the foot portion of one of the handle levers and one end of the spring to each of the blades and when thus assembled held against disengagement in part by the tension of the spring.
4. In a shear; a pair of blades; a pair of handle levers; a member between each of the blades and the lower end of one of the handle levers forming a pivotal connection; and a spring, the opposite ends of which are detachably secured to the member between the blade and handle lever this detachable connection being maintained by the tension of the spring and locking the parts against pren'iature disengagement from each other.
5. In a shear; a pair of blades; a pair of handle levers; a member, as a stud, between each of the blades and the lower end of one of the handle levers forming a pivotal connection; and a spring the opposite'ends of which are detachably secured to the member between the blade and handle lever.
6. In a shear; a pair of blades; a pair of handle levers; a member between each of the blades and the lower end of one of the handle levers forming a pivotal connection; and a spring, the opposite ends of which are slotted and by reason thereof detachably secured to the member between the blade and handle lever.
7. In a shear; a pair of blades; a pair of handle levers; a member, as a headed stud, between each of the blades and the lower end of one of the handle levers forming a pivotal connection; and a spring, the opposite ends of which are detachably secured to the member between the blade and handle lever and held against endwise movement on the stud by the head thereon.
8. In a shear; a pair of blades; a pair of handle levers; a spring; a member, as a stud, between each of the blades and the lower end of one of the handle levers; and a spring having a slot in each end thereof that extend in opposite directions and engage a portion of the shank of the stud adjacent to the head thereof and when assembled therewith all of the members are in part held against endwise movement on the stud by the sprin 9. In a shear; a pair of blades; a pair of handle levers; a spring; a stud having a head thereon in each of the blades, which project through one end or" each of the handle levers; and a spring, the opposite ends of wnich are connected with one of the said studs, said spring being held against movement parallel to the axis of the stud by the head thereon and then holding the handle lever against movement on the stud in one direction.
