This invention relates to swimming appliances and it has vfor its main object the provision of a device capable of being secured to the leg or ankle of the swimmer,
f and which would facilitate to make better speed.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device comprising a pair of hinged wings which open on the backward stroke of the swinnners legs thus affording speedy propulsion.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device ot' the character stated wherein the hinged wings may be adjusted in several dierent positions in respect of the mounting portion ot the device depending upon the particular swimming strokes used in swimming.
With the above gen-eral objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combina tion and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the invention in detail the saine comprises an ankl-et band made ot' metal or any other suitable lnaterial. Felt 16 secured to the undertace of said ankletby means of stitches 17 or any other suitable ineans provides a protective lining so that the anklet band 15 would not come directly in contact with the body ot the user. By nieans of straps 18 said anklet band is tastene-d to the leg of the swinnner. Substantially in the central portion of said anklet band a stud 19 is struck out. Bayonet slot 20 is provided centrally of said stud 19 for the purpose ot receiving therewithin head 2l of screw 22 by means of which the other portions of the device hereinafter described band of a portion of line lO-O of 15. As illustrated on Fig. number of depressions 23 for receiving therewithin the struck out lugs 24 inade in the disk 25, by ineans ot whichfarrangenient said disk 25 niay be held in stationar position in respect of said stud 19 and anklet band 15. At its upper tace adjacent its pe riphery the said disk 25 is provided with serrations 26 as illustrated on Fig. 7 Posif4 tioned above said disk 25 is an oblong plate 27. Spring 28 soldered at its central portion to the underitace ot said plate 27 remains normaliy interposed between said plate 27 and disk 25. The ends ot said spring 28 are also provided with serrations, which, coming in contact with serrations 26 on the disk 25 prevent nioveinent of plate 27 in respect oit disk 25.V The purpose of said sprino 28 is to provide cushioning ineans `tor plate 27 when under the pressure of water. As clearly seen on Fig. 2 the end ot stud 19, disk 25, spring 28 and plate 27 are held in relative stationary position by screw 22 and holt 29.
Plate 27 at one of its ends is provided with loops 30 for the purposes hereinafter described. The opposite end ot said plate 27 is provided with a bayonet slot 32 for the purpose later described.
Deilecting portion of the device cooperating with portions ot the device already described embodies' Va pair of wings 33 longitudinally hinged as at 34 on pintle 85. @ne oi the ends of said pintle 35 is provided with an integrally formed flattened head 36, and portion of said pintle 35 Vadjacent ot the head 36 is threaded as at 37 for the purposes later mentioned. Nut 38 upon said pintle 35 is adapted for operation upon said threaded portion or the pintle. The two wings 33 adjacent said head 36 and nut 38 have cutaway portions 39 for preventing the interference of said wings with the operation ot nut 38.
To the other end of pintle 35` moulding illustrated on Figs. 8 and 9 is mounted by screw 40. Said moulding comprises curved portion il `fitting the periphery oipintle 35. Laterally ot said portion il are two ears 4:2. Disposed below the plane or' the ears 42 and in'longitudinal relation therewith is loop 43, which, in the position of the wings illustrated on Figs. l and 3, is received between 'the two loops 3() of the plate 27, and remains on the line with lip 31. As clearly seen on Fig. 3 loop i3 and loops 30 are in hinged relation on pin lli which is 'maintained in position within t-he mentioned loops'by head l5 at one of its ends and nut i6 at the other end thereof.v As illustrated on Figs. l, 2 and 3 the tworwings 33 are adapted ttor angular movement on their longitudinal axis on the hinged arrangement comprised of loop 4:3 and loops 30. When the device is in use on leg of' swimmer on forward stroke of the leg wings 33 will assume a parallel relation with plate 27 as indicated by dotted lines on Fig. 2. OnV

Further angular swinging-movement ot the wings will be limited by lip 3l upon which the outer end of curved portion 4l of the moulding of Figs. 8 and 9 will bear against. On Jforward stroke of the legs in addition to the angular downward movement of the wings hereinafter mentioned, the wings may also to some extent told in respect to each other or make a radial swinging movement on pintle 35, but this will not be detrimental in a ywise to the eiiiciency ot the device.
Another position ot the wings 83 conteniplated by the present invention is illustrated on Figs. 5 and 6 whereby the wings are adjusted to remain at-"all times in an upright oosition iii respect ot' plate 2.7. lt is observed that in order that the wings may'not interfere Vwith the screw Li0 .by which moulding ci Figs. 8 and 9 is mounteduponv pintle 35, portion of each wing adjacent said moulding and the end ot' pintle 35 is cut away as plainly seen on Fig. 3.
While there is described herein a pr iierred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
That I claim'as new is:
l. A swimming device comprising an anklet band by means ot which the' device lmay be, secured to a limb of the swimmer, rrerellnsmembef upon Said aaklet band;

and means upon said propelling member whereby the same may be selectively mounted upon said anklet band in several relative positions in respect to the limb of the swimmer.
2. A swimming device comprising an anklet band by means of which the device may be secured to a limb of the swimmer, a pair of hinged sections hingedly mounted upon said anklet band, said sections being adapted for making angular swinging motion axially thereof upon said anklet band, and means for alternately mounting said sections upon said anklet band adapting the sections to collapse andopen on transverse plane thereof.
3. A swimming device comprising an anklet band by means of which the device may be secured to a limb of the swimmer, a
pair of hinged sections, said sections being adapted to collapse and open on transverse plane thereof, and means for alternately mounting said sections upon said anklet band for adapting the sections to make angular swinging motion axially thereoltl upon said anklet band.
