RECORDING DOOR LOCK.

This invention relates to recording locks, and ismoreparticularly directed to the simplification of such locks to the general end that. the same may be made of the fewest number of parts.
Provision is made for carrying out the various desirable functions of a recording lock, such as recording the time, the key number, the making of special designations indicative of the side of the door upon which locking and unlocking operations are effected, and further special records are provided to show upon the record strip whether the look was locked or unlocked. In addition, provision is made whereby a watchman making his rounds, may utilize the recording mechanism alone of the lock Without efiecting any looking or unlocking of the door, and during such recording operations of the watchman, a record is made which displays the time of the watchmans recording operations, together with a special \vatchmans symbol.
A further object of the, present invention resides in the provision of a simple mechanism for effecting the foregoing'operations, utilizing wherever possible common actuating devices adapted for Operation in accordance with the character of the record which is to be made.
A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a special key for operating the locking bolt structure from the inside of the main door or main lock. The parts operated by this special key are of exceedingly simple form, and while adapt ed to effect recording operations, they are not encumbered with complicated multiple differential key number-setting devices, but, on the other hand, are provided with simple mechanism for setting the key-number type carrier to a particular position to bring a type thereon designating I (inside operation) to the printing line.
A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a recording mechanism, operating devices therefor, and a bolt structure wherein the locking bolt may be readily reversed for left or right hand operation without the necessity of making extensive changes or modifications in the recording devices.
Further objects and advantages will be hereinafter pointed out in more detail in the accompanying specification and claims and shown in the drawings, which, by way of exemplification, show a preferred embodiment of my invention. i

The bolt and lock mechanism is of conventional form, including a tumbler barrel (Figs. 9'and 10) with provision for receiving Yale lock keys 2i. Slidably fitted in the barrel 20, but fixed against rotation therewith, is a key 22, which, in operation, is fixedly secured in a combination bolt actuating barrel and key bolt selecting device 23. Different keys 21 have shanks portions 21 of diiferent lengths, and in this way are adapted to differentially displace the part 22 and therethrough displace the bolt selector barrel 23 endwise when different keys are inserted in the lock. The barrel 23 is normally urged inward by means of a blade of supplementary sprin 24. To actuate the lock, the barrel 23 is slotted, as shown at 26 and keyed to a member 2'? having a lug 28 thereon adapted to engage a notch 29 in the locking bolt 30 (see Fig. 8). It will be seen that by turningthe key and the bolt barrel clockwise,
the bolt 30 can be withdrawn to unlocked Referring now to Figs. 1 2 and 6, the
time recording devices include a minutev time type wheel 36, an hour time wheel 37, and a day wheel 38. Suitable transfer devices generally designated 39 are provided for transferring from the minute wheel to the hour wheel and from the hour wheel to the day wheel. The minute wheel is advanced each minute by an impulse magnet 40 having an armature 41 connected to a pawl 42 engaging a ratchet 43 fixed to the minute wheel. Inside the time type wheels there are two sectors 44 and 45. Sector 45 is provided with a single type 46 thereon to denote that the operation was one of locking, the absence of the designation upon the record strip (see Fig. 5) in this particular column denotes that the operation was one of unlocking, or it may designate that the recorded operation was merely a watchmans record.
The type sector 44 is utilized for designating the key numbers of the different outside keys which are used in'the look. This sector is also provided with additional special type carriers, which respectively designate a watchmans recording operation and the inside unlocking operation by means of the special inside key.
Referring to the record strip, (Fig. 5) the first record indicates an unlocking operation by key number A at 752 on Thursday; the next record designates a locking operation by the key number B at 6-5 on Thursday; the next following record de-- notes a watchmans recording operation at 99 on Thursday; the next to the last record on the strip shows that the look was opened from the inside at ll44 on Sunday; the next record above shows the lock locked from the inside at 9-23 on Sunday.
The ink and ribbon devices are of the conventional form and include a supply spool 48 and a take-up roll 49; the ribbon 50 extends between them and over the type wheels and sectors. The take-up roll 49 is ad- .vanced at each operation of the recorder by means of a pawl and ratchet mechanism 51 (see Fig. 8). The operation of this pawl will hereafter be described.
The record strip 52 is drawn ofi a supply roll 53 and rolled upon the take-up roll 54; the take-up roll 54 is also advanced at each operation by ratchet and pawl device 55. Suitable retaining rate-hes 56 are provided for both take- up rolls 49 and 54.
Taking of records from the type wheel is effected by means of a simple metal platen 57. This platen is swung against the type by means ofa tension spring 58, which spring is put under tension by elevation of the pawl 59 carried upon the actuating member 60. The pawl 59 after being elevated to a certain extent drops off the shoulder 61 upon the platen and releases the latter permitting it to swing under spring action against the record material inking the rib bon and type.
Selection of key number designation.
pin 67 carried by the sector 44. The sector 44 and lever 64 are normally rocked, clockwise by a spring'68, and upon the turning of the barrel 23, the lever 64 will be differentially rocked in accordance with the particular stop 63 with which it is in cooperation. In this way the type sector 44 is differentially positioned to correspond with the particular outside key which is to be used. As explained, the sector44 also carries a type character, such as I to denote the operation of the lock from the inside by the inside special key. For this purpose the inside key barrel or actuating device 31 is provided with a camming element 69, adapted upon being turned to cooperate with an end 70 of the lever 64, the proportional partis such that part 69 turns lever 64 toa lesser extent than the smallest diametered shoulder 63 turns the part '64, and this brings the sector 44 to a particular position with the character I at the printing line. This position is different from the position of the sector, if any of the outside keys are in operation.
In addition to designating the outside key numbers, the inside special key operation and time, provision is made for permitting a watchman making his rounds outside the locked door to make a record in the recorder of the time together with a special record or symbol denoting that this record was a watchmens record. It is desirable that this supplemental watchmans record be made without giving the watchman a key which will permit the looking or unlocking of the main door. Accordingly. the watchman is provided with a special key 71, which he inserts in a suitable opening in the outside lock casing. Then, upon turning this key, the cam 72 will be rotated, causing the actuating member 60 to be lifted, thus bringing about a recording operation, feeding the paper and concurrently advancing the inked ribbon. To identify this as a watchmans recording operation, the type sector 44 is provided with a special symbol denoting a character, such as \V, which character normally stands at the printing line. This type character will be displaced away from the printing line when anyof the usual inside or outside door keys are utilized for unlocking or locking the door.
In order to actuate the member 60 to efiect recording operations, when either the regular outside Yale keys or special inside keys are utilized to advance or retract the bolt, the following mechanism is provided. Pivotedto a fixed part of the machine is a lever 72, adapted to be lifted by means'of the camming edges 7 3 upon bolt structure 30. These edges cooperate with a follower roller 74 on the lever 72'. The free end of the lever 72' underlies the shoulder upon the lower end of the actuating, member or bar 60, so that upon the actuation of the bolt 30, the member 60 is first lifted and then allowed to descend. 1':
In order to spring the sector 45 to bring the character L to the printing line, when the bolt is locked and to effect a difierence in the record, when unlocking operations are effected, the following mechanism is provided.
The normal position of the sector 45 is that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 shows the displaced position of this sector, that is, the tvpe character L at the printing line. Fastened to the sector 45 is a crank arm 75, provided with a pin 76, The sector 45 is also provided with a limiting shoulder 77 adapted to cooperate with a fixed limiting stop pin 78. The sector 45 is normally held in the position shown in Fig. 1 by means of a fixed spring 79 connecting a pivoted actuating lever 80 with a fixed pin 81.
For a purpose to be hereinafter described, the actuating lever 80 s made up of two parts marked 80 and 80 (see Fig. 2). each fixed to a sleeve 80 pivoted on a stud 80. The spring 79 at all times tends to swing the lever 80 counter-clockwise, causing the nose or shoulder 83 thereon to be brought into contact with the pin 76, thereby rocking the 'block 84 on the locking bolt 30 is brought into contact with a one-way flip pawl 85 carried on the end of the lever 80, thus causing the lever to be rocked clockwise, and through connecting spring 86 causing the crank 76 and the connected sector to be displaced anticlockwise until. the shoulder 77 contacts with the p n 78 and this brings the character 46 to the printing l ne. This position of the parts is shown in 7. hen the bolt is further advanced, after the recording operation is completed, the flip pawl 85 drops off the lug or shoulder 84 and the sector 45 is restored to normal posit on. Upon the unlocking of the door or main lock, lever 80 is not rocked at all, as the flip pawl85 rocks clockwise withoutimparting movement to the lever 80.
The above described devices are adapted to bring the type sector L to the printing line only during locking operations upon bolt 30, and at all other times and during all other recording operations a blank space on the sector is at the printing line.
Supplementary locking means are devised for bolt 30 comprising a blade 88 adapted to be lifted against the tension of the spring 89 by either the main bolt actuating lug' 28 or by the supplementary lugs 33 upon the unlocking and locking operations, then the shouldered lug 90 is'withdrawn from one or the other of two notches 91 upon bolt 30. When the bolt is entirely advanced or re tracted, the shoulder portion 88 is engaged in one or the other of the notches 91, thus preventing the man pulation of the bolt 30.
Provision is made with the present device for preventing the locking of the door in the event that one or more windows or other doors or locks, which may be disposed at points remote from the main lock, are unlocked. For this purpose member 27 is provided with a locking ratchet disc 92 carrying shoulders or teeth 93 (see .Fig. 3). Arranged to operate with these teeth, but normally out of cooperation therewith, there is an interlocking pawl 94, which is suitably connected to the armature of an interlocking magnet 95. Upon the energizat -on of this magnet (See Fig. 3), the pawl 94 is rocked into such position that it will be adapted to engage the teeth 93 and thereby prevent the complete rotation of member 27, otherwise stated, said interlocking device permits a part al rotation of the member 27, but prevents such. extent of rotation as is necessary to advance the bolt 30. The initial rotation of the member 27 is utilized for effecting the closure of a pair of contacts 96, which are in circuit with the interlocking means to thereby supply the magnet with energy only upon actuation of the bolt member 27. In this way, the current is utilized only at I supplementary locks are in multiple in cirsuch times when there is attempted manipulation of the bolt.. For effecting closure of the contacts 96, a cam member 97 is provided on member 27, which actuates the pivoted contact actuating lever 98. The contacts 96 normally remain open due to their own resiliency.
It will he understood that the interlocking device does not prevent unlocking operations of the door; Referring to Fig. 3, if the part 92 be turned in a clockwise direction, which is the direction of rotation for unlocking, member 9-1 would ride up upon the slope 01 the interlocking abutment 93 and would not effect :any arresting of the member 92 and the parts connected therewith.
' Referring now, to the circuit diagram, 99 designates a suitable source of current and 100 designates the usual master clock contacts, which periodically close momentarily and send a pulse of current to. the time type wheel magnet 40. The interlocking circuit 101 includes a plurality of contacts 102 normally biassed to open position and adapted to be closed when the bolts or looks of the remote doors or windows are in retracted or in open position. These contacts upon the cuit 101, and consequently if any of the remote supplementary locks are open or unlocked, current may flow through 101 to the normally opened interlocking contacts 96; then upon the attempted locking of the door, these contacts Will be closed permitting the interlocking magnet to be energized and thereby preventing the locking of the door.
- If all of the contacts 102 are open, showing that all of the remote supplementary locks are locked, the interlocking circuit 101 will be opened, and then irrespective-0f the closure of contacts 96, the interlocking magnet 95 willnot be energized and there will be no preventing of the locking of the main door.
The contact, and circuit arrangement is such that if the battery or source of current is ineffective, for example, weak or exhausted, the main door may be locked, since the interlocking circuit does not receive sufficient current to actuate the interlocking magnet. The main look also can be advanced if there is a broken wire in the system, inasmuch as the interlocking circuit will then be interrupted and no current can flow through the interlocking magnet. If the contacts 102 are out of adjustment, or if the contacts are dirty, the system will so functionthat the maiulock can not be locked. By reason of the fact that the interlocking circuit is normally kept open by the contacts 96, the current consumed is low, inasmuch as no current is consumed except at the times when the main door'is being locked or unlocked.
The aforesaid interlocking means and circuit controlling devices for the lock form the subject matter of a divisional apphca tion, Serial No. 12504, filed March 2, 1925.
A further feature of my present invention resides in the provision of means for permitting the reversibility of the locking bolt. For this purpose the key barrel member 27 is centrally disposed with respect to the locking bolt 30, so as to cooperate therewith equally well if the bolt is reversed, end for end. Supplementary notches 91 and 34 are provided-at the opposite ends of the bolt 30 to cooperate respectively with members 90 or 33. By reversing the bolt the stud 84: may be removed and placed in the position normally occupied by the screw 84 which is threaded into the bolt. It is then only necessary to reverse the part 80 relative to sleeve 80 and the flip pawl 85 will then function to rock the lever 80 upon the movement of the bolt 30to the right side and eflecting such rocking movement upon the bolt moving to the left. Itwill be understood that the guiding stud 115 is also placed at the opposite end of the frame in a suitable hole provided for this purpose.
I claim:
1. A recording door lock including recording mechanism with a common type carrier adapted to designate upon the record the key number and by a special sym ance with various key numbers when the door is unlocked or. locked thereby, a special inside key for locking or unlocking the door from the inside, and means comprising'a rotatable. camming element directlyrotated by the inside key and cooperating directly with the aforesaid lever for additionally difieren-tially displacing the common type carrier for effecting an inside. key operation designation.
2. In a recording'door-elock in combination with bolting devices, outside key controlled means for actuating the same, inside key controlled means for actuating the same, time recording means for making a record of the time of actuation of the bolt devices whether from the inside oroutside, a main type carrier with type thereon designating different keys, and an additional character, which is adapted to designate the side of the lock which was operated, means comprising a pivoted lever for differentially displacing said type carrier in accordance with .the different keys which are utilized, and means for further differently displacing the said type carrier in accordance with the operation of the look by a special-key, said last mentioned; means 'comprisingacamming axis as that of the special key and cooperating directly with an extension from the aforementioned pivoted lever to effect dis placement of the latter.
3. A recording door lock comprising a lock casing, a bolt structure, recording devices disposed entirely within said casing,
and means including devices variably actuated in accordance with the direction of actuation of the bolt structure for variably controlling said recording devices within said casing in accordance with locking or unlocking operations of the bolt to secure a record of a particular kind of operation which is effected.
4. A recording door lock comprising, in combination, recording mechanism disposed at the lock including a plurality of type wheels and a platen, said type wheels having provision for designating the time, key number, watchmans symbol, and a special character to denote the side of door which is operated and the locking or unlocking of the door, and operative means for the aforesaid platen, means controlled by the usual outside keys for operating said operating means, means controlled by a special inside door key-operated means for likewise operating said means, and means controlled by a special outside inserted watchmans key for also operating said platen operating means.
5. A recording door lock having in combination with a bolt structure, time recording devices and key operated means for mechanically operating the said recording devices, a special type sector for designating whether the recording operation is effected by looking or unlocking of the door, and one way setting connections intermediate said bolt mechanism and said special sector for setting the latter in one position upon a locking operation, and in a difi'erent position upon an unlocking operation.
6. A recording door lock, including a bolt structure, key controlled means for operating the same, special inside key controlled means for operating the same, a type carrier with provision thereon to designate upon the record key numbers and a special character indicative of the side of the door from which the bolt structure is displaced, a common means for differentially adjusting said carrier, said means having provision for differential operation by the different regular keys and a different operation by a special inside key, said last mentioned means comprising a rotatable camming element directly rotated by the operation of the special inside key and cooperating directly'with the aforesaid common means.
7. A recording door lock including in combination with recording devices disposed in the lock with provision for designating key numbers, a watchmans symbol, a side of door designation, and a locking designation, means operative solely by the ordinary outside keys for selecting the key number designation, said means being adapted to effect a time record together with a key number record and a record of locking or unlocking operation, and also being adapted to lock or unlock the door, means operated by a special inside key for effecting a side of door and time record while omitting special key number designations, and operable by a watchman for effecting a record of a watchlnans symbol only together with a time record without eitecting looking or unlocking operations.
8. A recording lock including a bolt structure, recording devices having provisions for designating locking or unlocking operations of said bolt structure, operating devices for said recorder controlled by said bolt, said bolt structure and recorder operating devices being correlatively associated to permit reversal of the bolt for right or left hand locking operations and for retaining proper recorder operations designating locking and unlocking operations.
9. In a recording lock in combination with a bolt structure, a recorder and means for mechanically effecting recording operations at the lock itself upon locking and unlocking operations, means for making a special record upon a locking operation, said means including a designating type sector in the recorder and one way setting devices therefor operable for setting the setter only upon a lockin operation of the bolt and inelfective to e ect said setting upon unlocking operations thereof.
10. In a recording lock, in combination with a lock and a boltitherefor, a lock casing, time recording deviceswperable by the keys of a lock and disposed in the lock casing, means in said recording devices for designating when the bolt is advanced in a particular direction, and means in said recording devices for omitting said designation when the bolt is operated in reverse direction.
11. In a recording lock, including a bolt structure, outside key controlled mechanism for operating the same, inside key mechanism for operating the same, a type position controlling member, means for positioning said member to a plurality of differential positions by dilierent keys inserted inthe outside key controlled mechanism, and means directly coactin with the aforesaid means and comprising a cam coaxially disposed with respect to the inside key mechanism for positioning said member to a further and different differential position by and upon the actuation of the inside key mechanism.
12. In a recording lock in combination, recording devices at said lock, special desig- III nating means therein for designating key numbers, locking and unlocking conditions and a watchmans operation, said means being normally in position to print the Watchmans designation upon a record strip, means operative upon the operation of looking or unlocking said door for displacing said Watchmans designating character away signature.
