Application filed February This invention relates to improvements in bed couches.

The main objects of this invention are:

First, to provide an improved bed conch having a slidably adjustable section with a receptacle for bedding or the like in which the cover for the receptacle constitutes a bed bottom member, the cover being raised on the extending of the adjustable section to W effectively support the mattress or the like.

Second, to provide a structure of the class described in which the main section is. pro vided with a bed bottom member which is automatically raised to position to properly support the bedding upon the extending of the adjustable section.

Third, to provide a structure having these advantages which is simple and economical and at the same time strong and not likely to out of repair in use.-

,. Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation of my invention will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

A structure embodying the features of my 2 invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a. part of this application, in which:

In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawing, I provide a main bottom section comprising front and rear

longitudinal rails

1 and 2 connected by the end cross members 3 and the intermediate members l. This horizontal frame is secured to the end members designated generally by the numerals 5.

The rear longitudinal rail 2, the cross members l and the longitudinal rail 6 disposed in spaced relation to the front rail constitute the sides of a receptacle, the bottom? being secured to the bottom edges of these parts.

The adjustable section designated generally by the numeral 8 is slidably mounted on the main section and adapted to telescope over the receptacle when the adjustable section is in collapsed position as shown in Figs. I and III. This receptacle is provided with a cover 9 which may be opened when the adjustable section is in its extended position. This cover is adapted as a bed bottom member and in order to bring it into approximately the plane of the adjustable section for the effective supporting of the mattress or bed it is mounted so that it may be raised and lowered.

I provide means for raising and lowering the cover, the cover in its lowered position permitting the adjustable section to telescope over the same. This adjustable means comprises a fram-alike support 10 arranged within the receptacle, the cover being hinged to the rear member of this support at 11. The support is carried by yoke-shaped hangers 12 which are arranged to embrace the end members of the support as shown in Fig. VI and also the end members or the receptacle.

These hangers 12 are provided. with rollers 13non their outer arms which rest upon the bars 14 pivotally mounted at 15 upon the links 16, the links being arranged in pairs and carried by brackets 17 on the ends of the receptacle. The links are supported against lateral movement by the upstanding arms 18. Stops 16' are provided for limiting the forward movement of the links 16, the stops being positioned so that the links are supported in a slightly forwardly inclined position when erected thereby preventing their accidentally collapsing.

The operating links 20 are pivotally connected to the bars 1 at 21 to extend forwardly therefrom and have upwardly projecting laterally upsetarms 22 terminating inupwardly projecting lugs 23. The adjustable section is provided with pairs of

tappets

24 and 25 the tappets 24: being adapted to engage the lugs 23 on the extending movement of the adjustaliile section thereby lifting the cover supporting member to the position shown in Fig. V. The tappets 25 engage the lugs 23 on the collapsing movement of the adjustable section thereby collapsing or lowering the cover support. t is necessary that this action take place dniriiugthe initial movement of the adjustable section. that is, that the tappers 25 shall become disengaged from the lugs to permit the complete collapsing of the adjustable section.

This I accomplish by means of the cams 26 with which the actuating links eng when in their forward position and which holdthe lugs 23 in engagement with the tappets until the links 'iassing off from the cams drop down to diseng go from the tappets.

with this arrangement I provide means for automatically raising and lowering the cover of the receptacle which as stated, constitutes a bottom member for the main section.

The adjustaole collapsible le s 27 section provided with which are mounted on the rods 28 havn arms 29 thereon coasting with the cam members 30 on the main section so that the legs swung to erected position when the adjustable section is extended. This leg erecting mechanism is that shown in my Patent No. id-79.3% dated January 1, 192 My present improvements are especial designed by me for embodiment in structures having tie features of my said patent.

I have illustrated and dcscribedmy improvements in embodiment which I have found very practical. I have not attenuated toillust ate or describe various modifications and adaptations which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will e2 able those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be dc ired.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure. by Letters Patent, is: I

1. remote supporting frame to embrace the ends of said receptacle and provided with rollers on their outer arms pairs of supporting links pivotally mounted at the ends of said receptacle, bars pivotally mounted on said links to coact with said rollers, actuating links pivotally connected to said bars adjacent their rear ends to project forwardly therefrom and provided with upwardly projecting lugs at their forward ends, tappets mounted on said adjustable section to coact with said lugs on said actuating; links when said adjustable section is moved to extended position, tappets on said adjustable section coacting; with said lugs on said actuating links on the col i lapsing of said adjustable section. cams coacting with actuating links for holding said lug into coac-ting relation to said collapsing tappets only during the initial. collapsing movementof said adjustable section, and stops for supporting said support ing links in a forwardly inclined. erected position.

2. In a couch bed the combination or", a main section having receptacle therein. an adjustable section slida ly associated with said main section to telescope over said recep tacle, a cover supporting frame mounted within said receptacle for vertical adjustment, a cover adapted as a bed bottom member carried by said supporting frame, yokelike hangers secured to the ends of said cover supporting frame to embrace the ends of said receptacle and provided with rollers on their outer arms pairs of supporting links pivotally mounted at the ends of said receptacle, bars pivotally mounted on said links to coact with said rollers, actuating links pivotall} connected to said bars adjacent their rear ends to project forwardly therefrom and provided with upwardly projecting lugs at their forward ends tappets mounted on said adjustable section to coact with said lugs on said actuating links.

3. 5. In a couch bed. the combination of a main section having; a receptacle therein, an adjustable section slidably associated with said main section to telescope orer said receptacle, a cover support mounted within said receptacle for vertical adjustment, a cover adapted as a bed bottom men'iber car ried by said supporting frame, yokedike hangers secured to said cover support to em race the ends of said receptacle and provided with rollers on their outer arms, pairs of supporting links pivotally mounted at the ends of said receptacle, bars piyotally mounted on said links to coact with said rollers, and means for adjusting said bars to raise or lower the cover support.

6. In a couch bed, the combination of a main section having a receptacle therein, an adjustable section slidably associated with said main section to telescope over said receptacle, a cover support mounted for vertical adjustment, a cover adapted as a bed bottom member carried by said support, pairs of supporting links pivotally mounted at the ends of said receptacle, supporting bars for said cover support pivotally mounted on said links, and operating connections for said adjustable section to said bars whereby the cover is automatically raised and lowered upon extending and collapsing of the adjustable section.

In a couch bed, the combination of a main section having a receptacle therein, an adjustable section slidably associated with said main section to telescope over said re ceptacle, a cover support mounted for verti cal adjustment, a cover adapted as a bed bottom member carried by said support, pairs of supporting links pivotally mounted at the ends of said receptacle, and supporting-bars for said cover support pivotally mounted. on said links.

8. In a couch bed, the combination of main section, an adjustable section slidably associated with said main section, pairs of supporting links, bars pivotally mounted on said links. a bed bottom member for said main section carried by said bars, actuating links pivotally connected to said bars adjacent their rear ends to project forwardly therefrom and provided with upwardly projecting lugs at their forward ends, tappets mounted on said ad ustable section to coact with said lugs on said ZICiTUQL QZHQ' links when said adjustable section is moved to extended po? tion, tappets on said adjustable section coactingcwith said lugs on said actuating links on the collapsing of said adjustable section, cams coacting' with said actuat' links for holding said lugs into coacting relation to said collapsing tappets only dur-- said links, a bed bottom member for said main section carried by said bars, actuating links pivotallyconnected to said bars adjacent their rear ends to project forwardly therefrom and provided with upwardly pro jecting lugs at their forward ends, tappets mounted on said adjustable section to coact with said lugs on said actuating links when said adjustable section is moved to extended position, tappets on said adjustable section coacting with said lugs on said actuating links on the collapsing of said adjustable section, cams coactingz; with said actuating links for holding said lugs into coacting relation to said collapsing tappets only during the initial collapsing movement of said adjustable section.

10. In a couch bed, the combination of a main section, an adjustable section slidably associated with said main section, pairs of supporting links, bars pivotally mounted on said links, a bed bottom member for said main section carried by said bars, actuating links pivotally connected to said bars and provided with upwardly projecting lugs at their forward ends, tappets mounted on said adjustable section to coact with said lugs on said actuating links, and stops for supporting said supporting links in a forwardly inclined erected position.

11. In a couch bed, the combination of a main section, an adjustable section slidably associated with said main section, pairs of supporting links, bars pivotally mounted on said links, a bed bottom member for said main section carried by said bars, actuating links pivotally connected to said bars and provided with upwardly projecting lugs at their forward ends, tappets mounted on said adjustable section to coact with said lugs on said actuating links.

12. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a main section having a receptacle therein, an, adjustable section slidably associated with said main section to telescope over said receptacle, a cover support mounted for vertical adjustment, a

cover adapted as a bed bottom member car-- riled by said support, means for adjusting said cover support, and operating connections for such supporting ineansto said adjustable section whereby the cover is automatically raised and lowered upon the extending and collapsing of said adjustable section.

13. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a main section having a receptacle therein, an adjustable section slidably associated with said main section to telescope over said receptacle, a cover support mounted for vertical adjustment, a cover adapted as a bed bottom member carried by said support, and means for raising and lowering said support.

14-. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a main section, an adjustable section slidably associated with said main sect-ion, supporting links pivotally mounted on said main section, bars pivot ally mounted on said links, a bed bottom member for said main section carried by said bars, actuating links pivotally mounted on said bars, and tappets on said adjustable section engaging said links on the extending of said adjustable section whereby said bottom member is raised, all coacting for the purpose specified.

15 In a structure of the class described, the combination of a main section having a receptacle therein, an adjustable section slidably associated with said main section, a

cover for said receptacle, a support to which said cover is hinged, said support being mounted for vertical adjustment, and operatin connections for said cover support to said adjustable section whereby the cover support is automatically raised and lowered upon the extending and collapsing oi": the adjustable section.

16. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a main section having a receptacle therein, an adjustable section slidably associated with said main section, a cover for said receptacle, a support to which said cover is hinged, said support being mounted for vertical adjustment, and means for adjusting said support.
