POWER DIAPHRAGM PUMP.
Application filed February This invention relates to pumps, and more particularly to power diaphragm pumps especially designed for pumping muddy water out of trenches, foundations7 bridge footings and excavations and for general drainage purposes.
One objectV of the invention vis to provide a simple, efficient and durable pump of the character referred to consisting o-f few parts which are adapted to be easily assembled or taken apart and in which the suction and discharge vvalves are easily accessible for cleaning purposes or for removing and replacing the diaphragm and suction valve.
, Other object-s are to provide a diaphragm pump having a base portion, a spout and a iack all cast or formed in one piece, with a ledge at the base of the jack on which the periphery of the diaphragm rests, together with means for clamping the diaphragm down upon the ledge, including a clamping ring which is removably secured and held in place by means of bolts inserted through radial projections on the clamping ring and radial extensions of the ledge of said main casting, conforming to the shape of the projections on the clamping ring so'that the diaphragm may be removed' and replaced without dismantling the pump by simply removing the bolts which secure said clamping ring tothe main casting andthe nuts on the ends of two bolts which secure the valve seat of the discharge valve to the diaphragm around a cent-ral discharge opening therein.
Another object is to provide a discharge valve having a ball-and-socket-joint connec tion with the valve stem to insure a perfect seating` of the valve when the parts are not assembled in perfect alinement as when the axis of the valve stem or the socket in which it is guided in its up and down movements in the plunger connecting rod is not exactly perpendicular to the'valve seat.
Another .object is to provide a suction;
valve which is yieldingly supported inoperable relation to an inclined seat formed on the inlet end of the suction pipe coupling in such manner as to be easily accessible for renewal or repairs or for cleaning; the valve being pressed toits seat by ay stent 8, 1926. Serial No. 86,890.
spring having one end seated against the ach of the valve and the other end seated against a superposed abutment on the main casting.
The invention will first be hereinafter more particularly described, with reference to the accompanying drawings. which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the description. f
In said drawings, Fig. l is a plan view;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional longitudinal elevation of a power diaphragm pump embodying my invention; Y
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig.l4 is a fragmentary detail view of a broken away portion of the pump, taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3; and Y Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail view, taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.' Y
Referring to said drawings, in which the same reference letters are used to denote corresponding parts in different views` the pump shown resembles in general exterior appearance the pump for which I have heretofore obtained Patent No. 1,447,074, but it differs therefrom very materially in im-A portant Yfeatures which will be hereinafter set forth. The letters A., .l and S denote, respectively, the base, the ack and the spout of my' improved pump, all in one piece, preferably a single'casting upon which is mounted, in suitable bearings, a crank-shaft B which is geared to a counter-shaft C which carries at one end a band wheel or Vpulley C1 for connection with a belt driven from a power engine or other driving means.

tubular members f of a valve-seat castingr harlngf a central opening therein around which is formed an upwardly extendingr annular portion f1, which forms a seat for a discharge valve F, when brought into valveseating position. The lower ends of the bolts E and El are passed through the inner portion of the diaphragm H surrounding a central discharge opening therein andare screwed into interiorly threaded sockets in a plunger ringT or casting Gr, whilethe upper ends ot' said bolts have nuts c and ev screwed thereon tor holding' the assembled parts together. Vfithin the axiai hereof the connee/iig' rod D is sli'dabljv iitted'a valve stem l l'iavingil a bail-shaped lower "end z' 'and a stuling-'boxdke connection with the discharge valve, and a coiled or other suitable spring `K is placed on the valvesteni between the shitting-box and cross- 7 so rifiuto exert a yielding pressure on head lu the valve tending to force it `*to its seat, while permitting it to yield against counter pressure tending to raise the valve. The valve l" has a' facing ot' `flexiblei'naterial coi'isisting' preierablyoi standard sheet rubber packing; clamped between up'jier and lower members `or metal parts f2 and'f "which are secured together `by a fastening bolt f4 screwed therein. As shown, dia1netrically opposite 'apertuied lugs on the two members oi the clamping ring` are so arranged that the lugs on one part will overlap and rest upon the corresponding lugs ol the 'other part'and the fastening bolts N at these two pointspass throligh the ovcr lapped J portions of the lugsvand through registering apertures in the underlying ledge on the main casting. The overlapping' 'portions of the lugs m and in, oi' the clamping' ring', at the pointiwherethe two "parts of the ring are joined together, are ol' wedge-shaped form, as shown in Fig. 5, so as not to weaken but `give the greatest strength possible at this point. yThe water passage in the base portion ofthe main casting terminates `atene` end in a tubular boss or projection 0 to which is secured in any suitable manner ya reinova'ble cap-plate or cover o, preferably by means of bifurcated lugs 0l formed on theoutside'oic the casting` and adapted to receive fastening bolts 0 which are rscrewed into nuts fitted in 'suitaoie recesses in said lugs 'toiprevent rotation ot' the nut. ylhe 'terminal ot' the water pas sage dianfetrica'l'ly opposite the closure 0 is in the lorm o'l a tubulin' projection l)` which has an end tlange p and an opening [Il in its top, overl which littcd a cover-plate R for closing said opening. A suc'tion pipe couplinfar 'if is bolted or otherwise secured to the llange y; of the tubular projection? tor the attachment thereto otailiose or suction pipe. The 'suction coupling T has au oblique or inwardly Ninclin'ed inner -end' portionY against.whichis seated a valve'U "which preferably has a metal back 'ua-nda rubber sheet facing al which is secured toa block V which in turn is secured on the upper side of the inner end otth'efsuction coupling- T 'by means `otf aset 'screw vLiso that bjvremoving 'the cover R the valve U may be removed bysiinply unserewinpr the set screw fr. On themetal backgfw otfthenvalveU is toi-med a boss' a2 against which isseated one end oa stout coiled or other suitable spring lV, `for "forcing the valve tov its lseat; the other end of the spring being seated in a i sa recess w on the underside ofthe main casting.
I thus provide a very simple and inexpensive suction valve construction in which the valve is yieldingly pressed toward its seat by means of a spring which is supported between a boss on the back of the valve and a superposed abutment on the main casting without other fasteningmeans.
Some of the advantages of a pump of the described construction over diaphragm pumps as heretofore ordinarily constructed may be enumerated as follows. AIt consists of comparatively few parts of simple design adapted to be easily assembled or taken apart, thus reducing the cost of manufacture and the time required in assembling and securing the several parts together. Easy ccess to the interior of the pump is afforded by simply removing the cover of the cleanout opening, and the diaphragm may be removed and replaced without dismantling the pump or removing the jack or spout. Easy access is afforded tothe suction valve for cleaning or removing it to replace a worn or broken part. Increased strength and reduced cost of manufacture are attained by constructing the base, jaclr and spout in a single piece, and simplicity and strength are combined in the general arrangement of parts.
The discharge valve, which isguided entirely by its upward projecting stem, gives a full, free, non-clogging discharge opening so essential to continuous uninterrupted operation of the pump, and this valve is spring loaded to insure quick action. rlhe raised, rounded seat of this valve will not permit particles to lodge on it and thereby prevent the valve from closing so as to destroy the suction. rlhe suction valve is alsospring loaded for quick action and its seat is in such oblique position that solids will not remain on it.
Having thus desrribed my invention, what l 'claim as new and desire to secure by Letn ters Patent of the United States is: .Y
