To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HERBERT J. WOOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lodi, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, and lVAL'rEP. R. WoooK, acitizen of the United States,.residin at Lodi in the county of San Joaquin, tate of dalifornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elbow Check-Valves; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanylng drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application. 7 w
This invention relates to improvements in elbow check valves for use with water pumping systems, the principal object of the invention being to provide an elbow check valve with a removable valve seat member whichmay be quickly and easily removed for replacement or renewal thereof without the necessity of discarding the valve body itself.
Another object has been to provide such removable member with a rounded seat portion so that no sand or other foreign matter may lodge on the valve seat as is possible 1 with the ordinarystraight seat and so cause the flop to wear more quickly or prevent the same having a tight seat.
Still another object has been to provide a means on the removable member whereby the same may be supported from the ground on the side thereof opposite from the pump,
thus taking some of the weight and strain of the valve and suction pipe connected therewith off the pump and distributing such weight and strain more evenly.
As a further object, we have provided a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which is extremely efficient for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects we accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
On the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding-parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a centrifugal pump showing the improved elbow check valve attachment.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the elbowcheck valve.
Referring now more'particularly to the numerals of reference on the drawings, 1 indicates the pump having an elbow valve 1 secured thereto ,which valve has a horizontal flop 2 in the lower end thereof hinged along one edge to the elbow 1, as at 3, The flop 2 when raised is adapted to fit into an offset cavity 1 formed in the side of the elbow, the hinge 3 being at the lower end of this recess, so that an entirely unobstructed flow of water may be taken through the elbow. cover plate 1 in order to remove or insert the flop 2 therethrough. r.
This elbow has a flange 4 around its Outer and lower circumference, which is adapted to impinge against and be removably secured to a flange 5, which has a circular hollow boss 6 projecting upwardly therefrom and which is adapted to impinge against the flop 2 to form a seat therefor.
The upper edges of this boss are rounded as at 7 to prevent any sand, etc, from lodging on the seat and so preventing the flop 2 from having a water-tight seat. i
The boss 6 extends below the flange 5 as at 8; such extension being threaded internally for the reception of the end of the usual suction pipe 9 therein extending downwardly therefrom.
The flange 5 has a horizontal projection 10 thereon on the side thereof farthest from the pump 1, in which projection is threaded an adjustment bolt 11 whose lower end preferably rests on a plate 12 to prevent the end of the bolt from pressing into the wooden floor or ground surface thereunder.
This bolt when screwed down the proper distance takes the side strain of the elbow valve and the pipe connected thereto oil" the pump 1, which strain taken in connection with the vibration and thumping of the water in the valve and pipe 9 very often springs the pump shaft and causes it to cut the bearings and packing which causes leaks andother troubles.
With our improved valve seat construction, in case it is necessary to replace or refinish the same, theflange 5 may be easily unbolted from the flange 4 without the necessity of discarding the entire valve or attempting to grind the seat while in position on the valve-a task which, in View of the awkward position of the seat relative to the valve is almost impossible to accomplish in a workmanlikemanner. V
I rom the foregoing description it will be readily seen that we have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the object of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention as defined bythe appended claims.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
Q 1. In combination with an elbow check valve for water pumps having a flop valve therein, a removable valve seat member having a, flange thereon adapted to be secured to the flange of the elbow, a sleeve on the re movable member below the flange thereon, the flange having an extension on the edge thereof farthest from the pump, and an adjustable bolt threaded into the extension and adapted to project down to the ground to take the uneven strain and weight of the suction pipe and elbow off the pump. 2. In combination with a pump and a suction pipe, an elbow check valve connecting the same, a horizontal extension at the lower end of the valve, and an adjustable bolt threaded into the extension and adapted to bear upon a support to carry the strain. and weight of the suction pipe and elbow.
