Application filed February This invention relates to pumps, and more particularly to power diaphragm pumps especially designed for pumping muddy water out of trenches, foundations7 bridge footings and excavations and for general drainage purposes.
One objectV of the invention vis to provide a simple, efficient and durable pump of the character referred to consisting o-f few parts which are adapted to be easily assembled or taken apart and in which the suction and discharge vvalves are easily accessible for cleaning purposes or for removing and replacing the diaphragm and suction valve.
, Other object-s are to provide a diaphragm pump having a base portion, a spout and a iack all cast or formed in one piece, with a ledge at the base of the jack on which the periphery of the diaphragm rests, together with means for clamping the diaphragm down upon the ledge, including a clamping ring which is removably secured and held in place by means of bolts inserted through radial projections on the clamping ring and radial extensions of the ledge of said main casting, conforming to the shape of the projections on the clamping ring so'that the diaphragm may be removed' and replaced without dismantling the pump by simply removing the bolts which secure said clamping ring tothe main casting andthe nuts on the ends of two bolts which secure the valve seat of the discharge valve to the diaphragm around a cent-ral discharge opening therein.
Another object is to provide a discharge valve having a ball-and-socket-joint connec tion with the valve stem to insure a perfect seating` of the valve when the parts are not assembled in perfect alinement as when the axis of the valve stem or the socket in which it is guided in its up and down movements in the plunger connecting rod is not exactly perpendicular to the'valve seat.

Referring to said drawings, in which the same reference letters are used to denote corresponding parts in different views` the pump shown resembles in general exterior appearance the pump for which I have heretofore obtained Patent No. 1,447,074, but it differs therefrom very materially in im-A portant Yfeatures which will be hereinafter set forth. I thus provide a very simple and inexpensive suction valve construction in which the valve is yieldingly pressed toward its seat by means of a spring which is supported between a boss on the back of the valve and a superposed abutment on the main casting without other fasteningmeans.
Some of the advantages of a pump of the described construction over diaphragm pumps as heretofore ordinarily constructed may be enumerated as follows. AIt consists of comparatively few parts of simple design adapted to be easily assembled or taken apart, thus reducing the cost of manufacture and the time required in assembling and securing the several parts together. Easy ccess to the interior of the pump is afforded by simply removing the cover of the cleanout opening, and the diaphragm may be removed and replaced without dismantling the pump or removing the jack or spout. Easy access is afforded tothe suction valve for cleaning or removing it to replace a worn or broken part. Increased strength and reduced cost of manufacture are attained by constructing the base, jaclr and spout in a single piece, and simplicity and strength are combined in the general arrangement of parts.
The discharge valve, which isguided entirely by its upward projecting stem, gives a full, free, non-clogging discharge opening so essential to continuous uninterrupted operation of the pump, and this valve is spring loaded to insure quick action. rlhe raised, rounded seat of this valve will not permit particles to lodge on it and thereby prevent the valve from closing so as to destroy the suction. rlhe suction valve is alsospring loaded for quick action and its seat is in such oblique position that solids will not remain on it.
