HINGED CONNECTION.
Application filed March 28, 1923. Serial No. 628,252.
My invention relates to improvements in hinged connections. The purpose of my invention is to provide a hinged connection of the character described so constructed'and arranged that. one pivotally-supported panel section may be swung freely relative the other panel section without rubbing there against or mutilating the exterior surface of the panel at the hinge joint.
In the specific embodiment of my improvement illustrated in the drawing and herein described, I have shown my invention in association with a hinged connection between two panel sections of an automobile hood,
though obviously it is not confined to this particular use.
The object is to provide in a hinged connection, comprising relatively swingable panel sections and a tubular casing longitudinally slotted to receive the turned-over adjacent edges of said panel sections to provide a hinge therefor, stationary pivots carried by the. casing for each swingable panel section so as to eliminate the rubbing of one panel section against the other and the consequent defacement of the surface of the panel sections at the joint.

The specific embodiment of my invention shown in the drawing relates to automobile hood construction. In the construction shown the hood is illustrated in a brokenaway section and comprises a stationary ce11- ter panel 10 to each side of which is hinged a swinging panel 11 by an improved hinge, the general construction of which will apear from reference to Patent #1341715 dated November 27, 1917. My improvement 13 held in place by screws 13 herein claimed relates to the hinge construction' described in this patent.
The tubular casing 12 carries end pieces These end pieces are cut away as at 14 to drain the casing and also cut away on the upper surface at 15 to permit free pivotal movement of the swinging panel sections. An end piece is disposed at each end of the casing and a pivot 16 projects from the face of the end piece for each panel section. The inturned marginal portion 17 of. each panel section, which marginal portion is received within the slot of the casing, is rolled over as at 18 to form a bearing receivable over the pivot '16 to support the panel thereon as shown in the drawing. Though it is not necessary, I have preferred to show the .marginal portion of the panel section as rolled over throughout its length and the pivots as studs projecting into the ends of the roll. This roll, throughout the length of the panel, stiffens the panel section. The panel sections, when mounted within the casing upon the pivots, which pivots may be in the form of pins, as above specified, or rods extending throughout the length of the casing, have a permitted pivotal movement relative each other and relative the casing, and are held from coming in contact with each other and marring the surface of the panels at the joint during the swinging movement.
What I claim is:
I In a hinged connection, in combination, a tubular casing longitudinally slotted to provide substantially parallel spaced apart edge portions, end sections mounted in the casing, spaced-apart pintles carried by said end sections and positioned between the spaced-apart edge portions of the casing,
and a panel hinged to each side of said cas- 111g having a folded edge engaged over an edge of the casing to pivot thereabout and mounted upon the pintles at the ends.
