Description

Nov. 30, 1926;
A w. T. CARNES PHONOGRAPH Filed Dec. 19, l1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Nov. 30, 1926.
unirse STATES PATENT OFM@ WILLIAM T. CARNES, OF KANSAS CITY,MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TOCARNES ARTIFICIAL LIME COMPANY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MIeSO'URI.
PHoNoGRAPH. I
Application led December 19, 1923.
This invention consists inimprovements in or relating to talking machines, and refers particularly to the sound boXes and needle holding mechanism thereof.
My improved sound box is so constructed that it receives the vibration from both sides of the dialiihragm, and is provided with a partition adapted to neutralize the alternate compression and vacuum sound waves emanating from the opposite sides of the diaphragm, so that interference of said waves will be avoided. This construction also provides for a throat passage from the diaphragm to the tone arm of greater diameter than is now used, which improvesthe quality of the tone. I have also provided an improved needle holding mechanism which provides suHic-ient elasticity and is free from all turning or sliding movements of metal against metal, and when secured in place does not require adjustment.
These and other features of my invention are hereinafter set forth and pointed o-ut and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a side view in elevation of my improved sound boX and needle holder.
Figure 2 is a horizontal central section of the same on the line 2-2 in Fig. l.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section of the same on the line 3 3 in Fig. l.
Figure 4 is a section of the stylus holding mechanism on the line 4-4 in Figure l.
Figure 5 is a horizontal central section of the removable face portion of the sound boX.
Figure 6, is a side view in elevation of a fragment of the sound-box and stylus holding mechanism on an enlarged scale.
Figure 7, is an enlarged section of the same on enlarged scale on the line 7-7 in Fig. G.
Figure 8 is a central longitudinal section of the stylus holding mechanism removed from the sound-box.
In these drawings A indicates the disclike body portion of the sound boX, which has a hollow neck A integral therewith by means of which it is secured to the tone arm B of the talking machine.
The neck A is provided with a vertical portion wall a which extends forwardly therein nearly to the center of the body portion A, the front end thereof being bifurcated as shown at a', to receive the diaphragm AC of the sound box. The face plate Serial No. 681,511.
A2 is secured on the body portion A, b) means of screws L2 in the usual manner, and gaskets Z9 engaging the edge of the diaphragm C, are clamped between the body A and face plate A2 when the screws a2 are turned up to bring said parts A and A2 together, thus firmly securing the diaphragm in place in the usual manner.
The interior of the neck A is divided by the wall a, into two sound passages Zi and 722 which extend forwardly to a point beyond the center of the diaphragm so that the sound waves generated on each side of the diaphragm C travel backwardly through said passage into the tone arm B of the machine.
By means of the division wall a, the tone wave generated in the passage b is partially separated from the tone wave generated in said passage b2 by the same movement, and vice versa, and thereby minimizes any clashing of tone waves.
The sound boX is provided with lugs H, H, on the periphery thereof which are spaced apart sufficiently to receive the needleV holding mechanism therebetween.
The needle holding mechanism of my invention, shown herein, consists of a middle disc D which is secured upon a plurality of lat spring metal strips E which are welded or otherwise permanently secured in radial slots in the periphery of the disc D. Also welded or otherwise permanently secured upon Jche ends of said fiat spring metal strip E, are endl discs F which engage the lugs I-I, H and are firmly secured thereto by means of screws 7i, so that said discs F will have no movement with relation to said lugs H.
The end discs F, flat spring metal strips E and middle disc D form a unitary structure, the flat metal strips E permitting a degree of flexibility between the middle disc D and the end discs F. Secured to the middle disc D is a needle holding socket (l wherein a stylus needle can be c amped by the thumb screw d. Also secured to the middle disc D is a needle lever D, the free end of which is secured to the central point of the diaphragm C. The strips of spring metal E, by reason of their flexibility, provide for the vibrating of the needle and allow the same to be communicated to they stylus varm D and diaphragm C. In this construction there is no movement of metal against metal, and the vibrating movement ot the needle and tone lever depends solely upon the torsion of the spring strips E, Which eliminates all possibility oi' any squeak or rattle, and when `the needle is clamped in place no adjustment is necessary, on account of expansion orcontraction.
Having thus fully described my invention so that the construction and operation thereoi` will be obvious, I do not desire -to be limited to the exact construction shown and described, as many modifications can be made therein Without departing from the scope of my inventionbut what I claim as new is:
l. In an apparatus of the class described, a diaphragm, a sound-box enclosing both sides thereof yand firmly clamping the edge thereof, a hollow neck communicating with the interior oi' said sound box, a division Wall Within said neck bifurcated at one end to receive a portion ,of said diaphragm, a needle holding mechanism secured on said sound box, and a stylus bar secured on said needle holder and said diaphragm.
2. In an apparatus of the class described,
a diaphragm, a sound-box enclosing both sides of and firmly clamping the edge ot Said diaphragm, a hollow neck on said sound-box adapted to be connected 'with the tone arm of a talking machine, a division Wall in said neck bifurcated at one end there-- of to receive said diaphragm and a needle holding mechanism including a stylus bar secured to said sound-box and to the cen- Vt'ral portion of said diaphragm adjacent to the bifurcated end of said division Wall.
3. In a needle holding mechanism 'or sound-boxes, a pair or spaced lugs on said sound-box, said lugs being provided with openings on the same axial line, a screw in WILLIAM 'r. cannes.
