CORE-MOLDING MACHINE.
Application filed March 8, 1928.
The principal object of the present invention is to facilitate the manufacture of cores for use in molding; another object of the invention is to provide a simple, reliable and comparatively inexpensive machine for closing two half core boxes or one half core box and a. drier plate and for presenting the parts at a convenient level for the workmen to perform such manual and other opera tions as are required of them.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description at the end of which the invention may be claimed. However. it may be said that, generally stated,
the invention comprises a core molding machine including a pair of rollover frames hingedly connected at their adjacent edges, means for lowering the hingedly connected edges of the frames to close them and for raising the hingedly connected frames to open them into horizontal position along with half mold boxes and a drier plate of which some are adapted for detachment and for pivotal connection with the fulcrum of the frames.
The invention also comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.
In the following description reference will be made to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which Figure 1 is a side view. partly in section of a machine embodying features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and I Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing another position of the parts.
In the drawings 1 and 2 are half core boxes hinged on the shaft 3 and doweled to the frames 4 and 5 with pins 6. The hinged rollover frames 4 and 5 are supported on the piston 7 by way of the shaft 3 and on pivotal links 8. 9 is a power cylinder for the piston 7. The piston is shown in Fig. 1 as held up 10 is the bed of frame of the machine shown as at sul stantially the floor level 11 which brings the top of the machine at a convenient height for the workmen. 12 are sand boxes, and 13, 14 and 15 are sand deflectors or guards. 16 is a latch adapted to swing over both halves of the core box and lock them together. It may be said that the details of Serial No. 93,010.
the frames 4 and 5 are suited to the particular core boxes employed. Core box 2 may be permanently hinged to the shaft 3 and core box 1 has an open end bearing 17 to permit of its being lifted off and replaced by a drier plate. The drier plate is not shown because it is in effect a duplicate of core box 1 except that it provides a larger or otherwise appropriate mold cavity.
The mode of operation may be described as follows: The parts being in the position shown by full lines in 1, the half core boxes 1 and 2 are filled with core sand and struck off. Exhaust-mg air from cylinder 9 permits the piston 7 to fall carrying down the fulcrum shaft 3 together with the hinged edge of the frames 1 and 2, which in turn revolve on shafts 18 while at the same time swinging it on the links 8 to a closed position shown in Fig. 3. In this position the two half core boxes are closed thus making a complete core. In this position the latch 16 is swung over and both halves of the core box locked together. Admitting air to the cylinder 9 lifts both halves of the core box up, the frames of course returning to the position shown in Fig. 1 and a slight pull or push by the operator swings the core boxes over to the right of the shaft 3 in. Fig. 1, so that both half core boxes clamped together rest upon the. frame 5. An air or other hoist, not shown because too well understood, swings the top half of core box 1 about the shaft 3 clearing the core which remains in the box 2. and the box 1 is then lifted clear of the trunnion shaft 3 and another hoist or like means swings into position a drier plate which. is lowered onto the shaft 3 and then swung down on top of the box 2 where it is clamped with the latch 16. Piston 7 is lowered swinging the core box 2 and the drier plate into the position shown in Fig. 3 and admitting air to the cylinder, lifts the core I box and drier plate up, and apush by the operator swings them into the position shown at the left in 1 with the drier plate underneath and the core box 2 on top. Core box 2 is then swung about shaft 3 to the right into the position shown in Fig. 1 ready to receive the next core. The drier plate with the core is removed as by a hoist or the like .and the core box 1 is remounted on the shaft 3 and swung back into the position shown at the left in Fig. 1 in full lines ready for making the next core.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement and in matters of mere form without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited to such matters or otherwise than the prior art and the appended claims may require.
I claim:
1. A core making machine comprising a pair of rollover frames hingedly connected at their adjacent edges, and means for lowering the hingedly connected edges of the frames to close them and for raising the hingedly connected edges of the frames to open them into horizontal position.
2. A core making machine comprising a pair of rollover frames hingedly connected at their adjacent edges, half core boxes and a drier plate hingedly connectable with the fulcrum of the frames and of which at least two are detachable, and means for lowering the fulcrum of the hinged elements to close them and for raising the fulcrum of the hinged elements to open the frames into horizontal position and permit swinging motion of the other hinged elements.
3. A core making machine comprising a pair of rollover frames hingedly connected at their adjacent edges, and pivotal links and a piston and cylinder upon which the frames are supported and by which they are closed downwardly and opened upwardly into horizontal position.
4. A core making machine comprising a pair of rollover frames hingedly connected at their adjacent edges, a pair of half core boxes and a drier plate hingedly attachable to the fulcrum of the hinged frames and of which at least two are detachable from that fulcrum, and pivotal links and a piston and cylinder upon which said elements are supported and by which they are closed downwardly and opened and put into swinging position upwardly.
5. A core making machine including a piston and cylinder, a fulcrum carried by the movable element of the piston and cylinder, a pair of rollover frames hinged to the fulcrum, pivotal links upon which the frames are supported, half core boxes hinged to the fulcrum and doweled to the frames and of which at least one is detachable, latch means for connecting and disconnecting said boxes, and a drier plate providing a larger mold *avity and otherwise similar to the detachable core box and interchangeable therewith.
